The dreams of middle-class Asian expatriates are losing their sheen as they quietly toil away and battle with the rising cost of living in Dubai. Meeting the great expectations of their families and relatives is causing great anguish to many.
This struggle to satisfy the demands of their people back home is leading to great distress for many expatriates – in some instances even forcing them to take extreme steps.
Family suicide

On September 17, a middle-class Indian family of three jumped into the Dubai Creek, apparently burdened by financial debts and unable to face humiliation back home.
And this is not an isolated case.

From January to September this year, an estimated 109 Indian nationals living in the UAE – or 12 of them per month – reportedly committed suicide.

Breadwinners offering crucial support to their families back home are walking the proverbial tightrope as the demands on them keep growing.

Expatriates are expected to remit more money back home to enable their dependents to maintain their lifestyles amid spiralling inflation. Folks back home expect state-of-the-art mobile phones or iPods as gifts from their kin living in Dubai. Relatives and friends, too, are prone to nudge expats for loans.

"‘Dubai mein rah kar ke, goli de rahe ho (Staying in Dubai, the land of prosperity, you are telling us lies) is what a friend in Mumbai told me when I expressed my inability to give him a loan of Rs50,000 [around Dh3,850]," said Syed Rahim, an accountant with an IT company.

The names of these expatriates are also prefixed with the term ‘shaikh’ in light banter to pander to their egos. The so-called "Dubai syndrome" has placed them on a pedestal – albeit one with weak support.

Friends demand the choicest mobile phones and laptops, he said. "They think money grows on trees here."
Mohammad Arshad, from Chittagong, Bangladesh, has been working in Dubai for the past six years and is currently with a radio station. He regularly remits money to support his parents and a sister. "Life for me as a bachelor is very difficult. Bachelors can be comfortable only if they have no family to support back home," he told XPRESS.
Another Bangladeshi man requesting anonymity said he has been forced to sub-let his rented home to paying guests to fulfil the needs and desires of his family members.
"I am thankful to Allah Almighty that I have been used as an instrument to support my family and share the responsibility of my parents to bring up my three brothers and three sisters," said Waqar Ahmad, 53, a senior executive in Dubai for the past 33 years and eldest in his family, hailing from Jhelum in Pakistan.
He said all his brothers and sisters were educated, had good jobs and were married.
Saiful Islam, 22, a Bangladeshi national from Mohammadpur near Dhaka, works with an airline company. "I have been in Dubai for the past six years, but more than me, it is my elder brother who has been supporting our parents, two brothers and two sisters back home," he said.
And inflation at home is adding to their woes.

Mayuresh Tanpure, from Mumbai, recalls that after getting employed, he had to repay a bank loan of Dh70,000 taken for funding his education at a Dubai college.
Now, his job as a market analyst with a leading hotel chain here has its perks as well as compulsions. "When relatives from India visited me recently, they saw me living comfortably in a one-bedroom apartment provided by the company and perhaps got the impression that I was well off. But I have the responsibility to get my sister married and also want to save to go to Australia.

"The Australian visa is going to cost me Dh6,000 to Dh7,000. The cost of living is also up. On a salary of under Dh10,000, I used to remit Dh1,500-Dh1,600 a month earlier, but now I have to remit the equivalent of Dh2,000 home to compensate for the inflation there," he said.
For Binoo Varghese, another hotel executive, , sending money home to India is not critical support, but is aimed at helping his father invest in mutual funds and shares.
But he can afford to do this only because his wife is also earning Dh10,000 as an IT specialist. Shiromi, a school teacher from Sri Lanka, has been a resident of Dubai for 10 years.

"I used to save and send money to my mother in Colombo to enable her to buy medicines, but she passed away some years ago. My brothers and sisters are working there and are not supported by me, but I do take gifts for them, like electronic appliances," she told XPRESS.

Shiromi and her husband together earn Dh20,000.
They are luckier than most.

Premlal Vijayan, a sociologist at Dubai Academic City, narrates the tragic tale of how a cleaner from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala worked in Dubai for 20 years to build a house and educate his son and two daughters.
Shock in store

Three years ago, he wanted to return home as his health did not permit him to stay on.
"But his wife and son did not want him to return as they wanted to convert their single-storey house into a multi-storey building on the strength of his earnings and the loans he could mobilise from Dubai," said Vijayan.

But due to failing health the cleaner returned home. However, an even greater shock was in store for him as he was not allowed to enter the house which was registered in his wife’s name.

The poor man took refuge in a temple there and the next morning he was found to have hanged himself from a nearby tree.
"Everybody in our neighbourhood knew the real story," Vijayan said.
Sociologist and social worker’s views
Premlal Vijayan, a sociologist at Dubai Academic City, said 90 per cent of Asians in the UAE were taking loans to satisfy the expectations of their families and relatives back home.

"The higher their salaries, the higher the expectations from them, particularly as Dubai is perceived as having reached a high stage of development," he analysed.
K.V. Samshudheen, Chairman of Pravasi Bandhu Welfare Trust, a welfare group for overseas Indians in the Gulf, said debts racked up by expat Indians to meet family expectations were driving them to commit suicide in the UAE.

During a recent visit to three districts in Kerala, he interviewed 500 dependents of breadwinners in the Gulf. Of the 500 interviewees, only two even bothered to ask about the living and working conditions of their benefactors.

Uma Padmanabhan, a social worker, said several middle-class Indians in Dubai are paying monthly instalments on car loans
taken by their family members or relatives back home.

"If the instalment is, say, Rs5,000, they think their Dubai brother or sister has to just pay Dh500 from their salary," she said.

Moreover, low-wage earners among Indians making Dh900 per month are expected to raise Rs100,000 (Dh7,495) to Rs200,000 (Dh14,990) for weddings in their families.

Since they don’t have that cash, they end up taking loans in Dubai at high interest rates from private sources. As debts pile up, so do depression and tension, ultimately causing heart attacks, paralytic strokes and other ailments.

These people are often single breadwinners supporting seven to eight people back home.

SITTWE, Myanmar — The cyclone that ravaged Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Delta five months ago has led to an unexpectedly robust influx of foreign money and relief workers, showering aid on a small part of Myanmar’s population but leaving other, equally desperate parts of the country to fend for themselves.
Deprivation persists in Sittwe and other non-delta areas.
After initial resistance by Myanmar’s junta just after the cyclone in May, dollars have cascaded into the delta on a scale that this country has perhaps never seen.

Britain, the European Union, the United States and Australia — all of which have long been considered the sworn enemies of the junta — have led donors in a fund-raising effort that has so far provided $240 million, or about $100 for every person who survived Cyclone Nargis, an amount that the United Nations hopes to double in the coming months. The donors are leading projects to rebuild roads, schools, houses and water storage tanks destroyed or damaged during the storm.

Aid workers say they hope that this intensive effort in the delta, where only a small fraction of the country’s population lives, has opened up the possibility to expanded humanitarian operations at some point. But they acknowledge that for now the generous assistance in the delta has created a stark imbalance in the country.

“There’s a serious amount of money flowing into this country, and it’s all for Nargis victims,” said Frank Smithuis, head of the aid group Doctors Without Borders in Myanmar. “That is great, but it is strange that nobody seems interested in the needs of the rest of the country.”

Outside the delta, the list of those in need of food and medical attention in Myanmar is long and distressing.

In Sittwe, a city overlooking the Bay of Bengal, a half-dozen men have as their only employment an umbrella repair business, fixing battered made-in-China models that would be tossed into the trash in neighboring countries.

A household survey carried out in June for United Nations agencies found a “worsening and alarming economic situation” in villages near the border with Bangladesh. With bad weather last year leading to crop failures, families cut back from three to two meals a day. Only 60 percent of boys and less than half of girls had normal body mass — the rest were severely malnourished. And only 12 percent of households had soap.

In northern Myanmar, erstwhile opium farmers who gave up the heroin business in recent years in exchange for promises that they would be given food aid have now returned to planting opium because they are hungry, aid officials say.

Across the country, out of a quarter of a million people infected with H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS, 80,000 are in urgent need of retroviral drugs and only 15,000 will receive them, Dr. Smithuis said. “The others will die,” he said.

In Chin State, near the border with India, villagers are suffering what has the ring of a biblical plague. Thousands of rats, attracted to a rare blooming of bamboo flowers, have eaten through rice fields and other crops. Farmers in some villages are now living off of wild tubers in the jungle.
“The rats ate everything,” said Pyi Kyaw, a 38-year-old villager who rowed a boat loaded with bamboo and other timber for several days downstream to exchange the wood for large bags of rice. It will take nine days to row back home against the currents, he said.

For years, Western countries were reluctant to provide aid to Myanmar for fear that it would strengthen the grip of the junta and its repressive policies. But the cyclone, which struck on May 2 and 3 and left an estimated 130,000 people dead or missing, was a turning point because Western governments believed that the plight of the victims overrode concerns about ways that the junta might benefit. Today, 26 international aid organizations are operating in one district of the Irrawaddy Delta alone.

In past years Myanmar received tiny levels of aid compared with its neighbors. In 2005, the latest year for which comparable figures are available, Myanmar received $3 per person in aid compared with $9 per capita in Bangladesh, $38 in Cambodia, $49 in Laos and $22 in Vietnam.

The quandary for aid organizations is that assistance pledged for the delta must be spent in the delta, aid workers say. The World Food Program, a United Nations agency that delivers rice, beans, cooking oil and iodized salt, is fully financed through January for victims of the cyclone. But the organization will have to cut back programs in northern areas of the country because of an immediate shortfall of $11.2 million, partly caused by the increase in global food prices.

“We haven’t been able to convince donors to give us money for projects in the northern areas,” said Chris Kaye, the head of the Myanmar operations of the World Food Program.

The cyclone has also drained resources away from areas outside the delta. Trucks, aid personnel and equipment were channeled to the cyclone-hit regions from northern areas of the country. And with an important rice-growing area in the delta damaged by the storm, the government forbade the World Food Program from buying cheaper, locally produced rice, fearing food shortages. The United Nations is now forced to buy more expensive foreign rice, further straining budgets.

In perhaps the most stark example of the imbalance between the delta and the rest of the country, impoverished villagers here along the border with Bangladesh have been forced by the government to donate money for the victims of Cyclone Nargis — a philanthropic gesture, couched as patriotic duty, that they can hardly afford.

Like the more than 720,000 other Muslims who live in Rakhine State, a rain-soaked western corner of Myanmar, Kobi Ramau is stateless. His parents and grandparents were born here in British colonial times, but the military government does not recognize him as a citizen.

For Mr. Ramau, a farmer and father of four, life is an extreme example of the deprivation, hunger and general poverty that many people in this country face. Myanmar’s military government bans him from traveling outside his district without a permit. Soldiers expropriated Mr. Ramau’s land a decade ago and took his 80 buffaloes. He is now paid the equivalent of $25 a month by the military to till the land he once owned. “They took everything,” he said
He seems initially startled when asked what types of things he needs, if the aid flowing to the delta were to come to this part of the country.
“We need so many things,” he said, pausing to respond. “We have no money.”

Microsoft and Apple beware - a 'virtual computer' could spell the end of the traditional operating system, says Claudine Beaumont.

Thanks to web-based services such as Google Docs and Zoho, users are able to create Microsoft-compatible presentations, documents and spreadsheets that can be accessed, shared and edited online, from any machine. You can customise and personalise your virtual desktop with widgets - small programs that grab information from the internet, such as news headlines, weather reports and sports results, and present them in a clear, easy-to-use format on your desktop. Store your digital photos online, using services such as Flickr, so that they can be accessed and shared from any computer. Other web-based services, such as Meebo's instant-messaging tool, are a great way of staying in touch online. Next week, in Los Angeles, Microsoft will reveal details of its new Windows operating system, and is also expected to explain how it plans to enter the world of "cloud computing".

Bill Gates of Microsoft

Still ahead of the game?
Cloud computing is considered the next big thing in the world of technology. Put simply, it means that rather than storing personal files and documents on your home computer, they will instead be stored on remote servers - known as the "cloud" - that can be accessed from any internet-enabled computer.
Likewise, software and programs, such as your word processing or photo-editing software, will not be installed on your home computer from an installation CD, but will live online instead and go with you, which ever computer you use.
Increasingly, software companies are waking up to the potential of products and services that make the best of cloud computing.
Google, for example, offers Google Docs, a free suite of Microsoft Office-style products that allows you to write letters and spreadsheets and create presentations online, and call up those documents on any computer.

The fact that documents and photos live online also makes it easier for them to be shared, meaning that colleagues could collaborate on a project, or family members could follow an online photo travelogue of a student's gap-year by viewing the photos they've uploaded to services such as Flickr.
Microsoft is perhaps beginning to understand that its traditional business model of selling software on CDs is not built for the world of computing we now find ourselves in. The company is widely expected to announce plans to put some of its popular Microsoft Office software online as part of a move to diversify its core services into cloud computing.
The big problem faced by companies who provide cloud computing services is finding a way to promote and deliver these products to consumers without blinding them with science. Pulling disparate products into one simple user interface that looks and feels as reassuringly familiar as the traditional computer desktop could be one way of doing it.
G.ho.st (www.g.ho.st), a technology start-up founded by a team of Israelis and Palestinians, could become the friendly face of cloud computing. It provides what is known as a "virtual computer" - a free, web-based interface that allows users to access their files, documents and online services from any computer with an internet connection. It looks like a traditional computer desktop, with menus and icons scattered across the screen. Once you sign up to the service, you get a unique username and login, which means you can bring up your own G.ho.st desktop on any computer you use.
Not only does it provide a single point of access to a host of online "cloud computing" services, but also one-click access to a user's Flickr photo library or music collection, the latest weather reports and news headlines, and important documents. "I felt the ultimate goal was to offer everyone a computing environment which is free, and which is not tied to any physical hardware but exists on the web," says Dr Zvi Schreiber, one of G.ho.st's founders.
"Our virtual computer will enable users to get their computing environment from any browser - and we'll eventually compete head-on with Microsoft."
G.ho.st, which can be downloaded free from Halloween (Oct 31), helps users to build a virtual desktop festooned with clever online services such as email, a photo-editing tool called Snipshot, and Meebo, a web-based instant-messaging service. It backs up everything a user has stored online to a remote server, and will automatically ensure that all applications and services are up to date.
If services such as G.ho.st take off, they could spell the end for traditional operating systems made by the likes of Microsoft and Apple. In the future, when you turn on your computer, it will connect straight to the internet, and the desktop you're presented with will be a virtual gateway to a host of online services, accessible wherever you are and which ever computer you use. To access G.ho.st's virtual desktop, you first need to sign up to the service. Thereafter, you can visit its website from any internet-enabled computer, type in your unique user information, and you will then have one-click access to all of the documents, files and photos you've stored online.
While a battle rages at one end of the computer market to produce small, lightweight "netbooks", at the other end, manufacturers are slugging it out to produce the thinnest, lightest and best-performing machines. First came Apple's MacBook Air, then Samsung announced its X360. Now Toshiba is launching the R600, a laptop that tips the scales at just 800g, but which packs in a host of high-end features. It's got 3G internet access, 3GB of RAM, a 12in screen and full-size Qwerty keyboard, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and a choice of up to a 200GB conventional hard drive, or a 128GB solid-state drive.

The world's heaviest male - known as Half-Tonne Man - has got married, after being taken to the ceremony in his custom-made bed on the back of a flatbed truck.

Mexican Manuel Uribe, 43, wore a white satin shirt and had a sheet wrapped round his legs as he wed his longtime girlfriend, Claudia Solis, in front of 400 guests in a civil ceremony in Monterrey, northern Mexico.

                                          ဒီကမၻာမွာကြ်န္ေတာ္အေပ်ာ္ဆံုး
Happiest day of his life: Half-Tonne Man, Manuel Uribe, arrives at his wedding in his customised bed

The bed - which Uribe hasn't left in six years - was decorated with a canopy, flowers and gold-trimmed bows.
Two police patrol cars escorted him ahead of a long line of traffic.

Uribe tipped the scales in 2006 at 1,230 pounds (560 kilograms), earning him the Guinness Book of World Records' title for the world's heaviest man.
He has since shed about 550 pounds (250 kilograms) with the help of Claudia, whom he met four years ago.

                                     ၿမန္ၿမန္ေမာင္းပါဗ်ာ။သူေမွ်ာ္ေနၿပီ!!!!
Get me to there on time! Uribe's bed was transported on the back of a truck

He said: 'I am proof that you can find love in any circumstances. It's all a question of faith. All I want is to be happy and to love and be loved. And today is a very special day because of that.'

It took an hour to take Uribe to the ceremony 10 miles away with the efforts of over ten men with two tow-trucks - one a spare - and a police escort at hand. All the time Uribe waving to well-wishers and the many journalists and photographers present.

Blushing bride: Uribe's new spouse, Claudia Solis

When he arrived at the wedding venue, Club de Leones, it took 20 minutes to lower the tow-truck's ramp over the hall's steps and then rotate his bed before pushing it through the venue's large front doors.
The bride was mobbed by more than 30 photographers when she arrived half an hour later in a black jeep.

Happy: Claudia Solis arrives for her wedding

She said: 'I'm not nervous. I'm just very happy. It's a very special day for us. We are marrying because we are in love.'

The couple met four years ago when Claudia, 38, visited to tell him that her then-husband, a school friend of Manuel's, had died - due to complications from being morbidly obese.

They grew closer due to their dedication to Christianity and eventually started a romantic relationship, including sex, they say.

After the wedding ceremony there was a huge banquet with three huge cakes - which the groom vowed not to eat, as he is still dieting, in the hope that he will shed enough weight that he can walk again.

The main dish was a chicken with vegetables. Uribe said: 'It is a heavyweight wedding, but low in calories.'

The whole thing was arranged in less than a month when the couple decided they could not wait to wed. Friends, local politicians and sponsors donated money to help pay.

                                              သိပ္မ၀ပါဘူး၊ပါးပါးေလးပါ။

MUMBAI - India's only gorilla, Polo, needs a mate after eight years on his own, but a worldwide search for a suitable match has drawn a frustrating blank, zoo officials said on Wednesday.
The 36-year-old western lowland gorilla has been at Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in the southern city of Mysore since 1995, and alone since his mate Sumathi died in 2000.
Zoo manager Siddappa Shivanna said an international hunt for a female to share his pen at the 116-year-old zoo had been unsuccessful, and the ageing bachelor is getting lonely.

"We try to put play items in all the enclosures and we want Polo to be active but there is no substitute for a companion," he told AFP by telephone.

"We would prefer to have a mating partner but if it's not possible even a social partner would be a good thing. He's the only gorilla in the country."

Polo was brought to Mysore from Dublin Zoo in Ireland to mate with Sumathi but they did not have any offspring, mainly because she was already 46 when they were paired up.
He is now worried that if no one can be found, Polo himself will be too old to father any baby gorillas.
Western lowland gorillas are native to forests in equatorial Africa and are endangered due to illegal hunting, disease and habitat loss.

Tribe's barbaric  test to check  wife's  fidelity

Renu Rakesh/Gulf News
Women in the village of Badi Sadri, Udaipur district, have to prove they have been faithful to their husbands by dipping their hands in boiling oil for five seconds.

Jaipur:  It's a weird test: If you are chaste, your hands will come out unscathed from the bowl of boiling oil; if you suffer burns, you've been cheating on your husband.
What's worse, it's an annual ritual. Every year, women in a tribal village in Rajasthan, western India, face this trial by fire - to prove their good character during the previous year.
Every year, when the country celebrates the victory of good over evil by burning effigies of the demon king Ravana and his brothers, men in this village, in wanton disregard of human life, subject women to this barbaric test.
This Dushehra, too, at least 20 women of the Bagariya tribe, in Badi Sadri village in Udaipur District, were forced to take this test. Fortunately, none of them got singed.
The men broke into gay folk songs and cooked a meal for the tribe.
On the morning of this Hindu festival, which was celebrated in north India last Thursday, a wood fire was raised to boil mustard oil in 14 bowls outside a temple in the village. The women were then asked to immerse their hands one by one into the liquid, and to keep them submerged for five seconds.
When they remove their hands, they are checked for burns. Those who suffer burns, have been immoral in the past year. The gravity of the burns dictates the degree of infidelity.
"Our men mostly stay out during the nights for livelihood. We sustain on crime: thefts, loot. Therefore, it's quite likely women will fall for the other guy," Durgesh Bagariya, the tribe's head, defends this ritual. Yet he offers no reason for this test. Nor does he answer why men aren't subjected to the same test.
Such tests are commonplace in the tribal areas of Udaipur and adjoining districts.
A few years ago, a theft was reported. Instead of summoning the police, the village heads decided to subject all the men to a test to identify the thief. They boiled oil and made the men immerse their hands.
Three were singed, and the villagers concluded them to be the thieves. The local police also accepted this theory, and the trio were arrested without any further investigation.
But that was once-off incident. In Badi Sadri, it happens every year - ironically, on the day when the country burns the evil.

Water to be jetted 50 storeys high as Dubai unveils plans for world's tallest fountain

Engineers in Dubai have begun work on a record-breaking fountain that will shoot a jet of water higher than a 50-storey building.

The Burj Dubai Lake is set to add one more extravagant finishing touch to the world’s tallest building.

Due to be completed in 2009, the fountain will propel 22,000 gallons of water 490ft into the air at any one time.

Impressive: A computer-generated design of the world's tallest fountain in Dubai

The spectacular feature will draw water from a man-made lake the size of two football pitches in length.

More than 6,600 lights will ‘perform’ selected musical pieces in time with the jets of water on the 30-acre lake.

Predicting more than 10 million visitors annually, Mohamed Ali Alabbar, chairman of developer Emaar Properties, said the fountain was over 25 per cent bigger than its only rival at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas.

Giant: the fountain will propel 22,000 gallons of water 490ft into the air

‘The fountain on Burj Dubai Lake is more than a visual spectacle that adds to the aesthetics of Downtown Burj Dubai,’ he said.

‘It is an engineering marvel and will further contribute to Dubai’s rich array of tourist attractions.’

Enlarge High life: The Burj Dubai, the world's tallest building, will be just the place from which to view the spectacular fountain

Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest building, has an observation deck on level 124 offering visitors unparalleled views from the top.

Other components of the new city centre that appeal to global tourists include one of the world’s largest aquariums, an Olympic-sized ice rink and the largest indoor gold souk in The Dubai Mall, and a range of lifestyle events to be held at Burj Dubai Boulevard.

DUBAI — Have you seen a shopkeeper selling betel leaves (paan) or its variants like Pan Parag or Pan Masala etc.? Well, in that case you stand to earn a reward of Dh5,000 if you pass on this information to civic authorities.
Dubai Municipality was earlier giving a reward of Dh2,000 for
the same, which has been hiked to Dh5,000.
Any shopkeeper caught selling betel leaves, Pan Parag, Pan Masala or chewing tobacco etc., will be deported immediately, Hussain Nasser Lootah, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality (DM) announced on Wednesday.
Launching the first phase of the DM campaign against spitting and littering, named “Say Yes to a Clean Naif”, Lootah reiterated that manufacturing and selling of such products is banned in the emirate.
The import, sale and use of betel leaves and its alternatives has been banned according to the Local Order No 11 of 2003.
“From now on, we are not going to give the guilty a first, second or third warning. They will be deported immediately.
“Shops found selling these products will be closed down without any delay,” Lootah made it clear.
Besides being exposed to many a health risk, a majority of people chewing betel leaves and other such products spit on the roads, which tarnishes the beauty of the city.
“This is a serious problem and we need to get rid of it. Many shops and groceries are selling these products secretly. Inspections will be intensified to trace the violators. People need to be aware about the laws and regulations,” Lootah said.
The Municipality imposes a fine of Dh500 on a person found spitting in public.
Meanwhile, the DM’s month-long campaign, which continues until November 13, is aimed at restoring the old charm of Naif area, DM officials   said.
“The campaign aims to transform the busy Naif area into a cleaner place that suits the name and fame of Dubai.
The campaign will create awareness among residents about general cleanliness, and will ask them not to throw cigarette butts and other wastes on roads. They will also be asked to stop spitting in public places, aside from discouraging the practice of hanging clothes on the balconies,” Lootah said.
Subsequently, the campaign will be taken to other areas of the city such as Al Ghubaiba, Al Sabkha, Al Fuhaidi, Al Karama, Al Qusais and Al Qouz.

An open invitation to mouth cancer

DUBAI — Chewing betel leaves with tobacco can lead to pre-cancerous conditions, says a senior health expert.

Though chewing a plain betel leaf (paan) might not be that harmful for a person’s health, but adding tobacco or ghutka (flavouring) creates pre-cancerous conditions in the mouth, stomach and throat, and damages gums,” says Dr Murali Srinivasan, Specialist Dentist, Head of Department, Advanced Dentistry, Jebel Ali Hospital, Dubai.

“A socially repulsive habit, people tend to spit anywhere and everywhere after chewing plain betel nut and leaf,” explains the doctor. “The added colours in the betel nut can also lead to staining of teeth which require special cleaning,” he says.

Dr Murali says that if the paan is chewed with tobacco or ghutka, it could cause the softer tissues of the mouth and cheeks to harden, leading to oral cancer. “This thickening of the mouth means that pre-cancerous conditions have been created, which of course are harmful to health,” he adds.
Betel chewing is addictive and has effects of alkaloids, which are comparable to nicotine in its stimulating, mildly intoxicating and appetite-suppressing effects on the mind. — Asma Ali Zain

German farmer Karl Merk gets world's first double arm transplant

The world's only transplant recipient of two full arms

The first man to undergo a successful double arm transplant has spoken of his joy at the “indescribable feeling of being a whole man again".
German farmer Karl Merk made his first public appearance on Wednesday, almost three months after the ground-breaking 15-hour operation, and says he can already perform simple tasks such as opening doors and turning lights on and off.
"It was really overwhelming when I saw that I had arms again," the 54-year-old told reporters at a press conference at the Munich University Clinic.

Wearing support straps on his lower arms with a sleeveless black t-shirt that revealed exactly where his new arms had been grafted, an upbeat Merk added, "It’s just fantastic. These are my arms, and I'm not giving them away again.”
Merk lost his own arms in a corn shredder accident six years ago and admitted he was stunned at the success of the transplant in July, which required the skills of 40 staff, including surgeons, nurses and anesthesiologists.
"All in all, our wildest expectations have pretty much been fulfilled," said Christoph Hoehnke, one of the lead doctors helping Merk through his intensive in-patient program of physiotherapy and counseling. which is expected to last another four to six weeks.
Although there is still a risk that Merk’s immune system will reject the arms, his doctors say the current indications including nerve growth is good, though it may take up to two years before he relearns how to use his hands.
Merk says he is looking forward to eventually being able to feed and dress himself, “"and cruise around a little on my rollerblades".

A mighty mouse meant to be a light snack for a snake proved it was a rodent not to be trifled with as it bit the hungry viper to death.

Whiskers twitching, the mouse stares into the jaws of death - and then pounces on them.

The little fellow had no intention of being lunch for the deadly viper whose cage he had been thrown into.

During a vicious 30-minute struggle the mouse tore at the serpent's head with its tiny paws and jaws, finally killing it.

The outcome amazed firemen in Nantou, Taiwan, who had rescued the footlong snake from a local home and taken it to their fire station as a pet.

Fireman Lan Sengqiu said the snake might have used up all its venom trying to bite them when they caught it, adding: 'The mouse barely had a scratch on him.'

Vipers have a pair of long hollow fangs, that are used to inject venom from glands at the back of the jaw.

During a strike the mouth can open to nearly 180 degrees, and jaws snap shut on impact.

Death is usually caused by a collapse in blood pressure from the venom.

But snakes do have enemies. They can fall prey to large birds, wild boars, mongooses, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, other snakes. . . and apparently mice.

It is already home to the world's glitziest buildings, man-made islands and mega-malls - now

Dubai plans to build the tallest tower . But behind the dizzying construction boom is an army

of migrant labourers lured into a life of squalor and exploitation.

The sun is setting and its dying rays cast triangles of light on to the bodies of the Indian workers. Two are washing themselves, scooping water from tubs in a small yard next to the labour camp's toilets. Others queue for their turn. One man stands stamping his feet in a bucket, turned into a human washing machine. The heat is suffocating and the sandy wind whips our faces. The sprinkles of water from men drying their clothes fall like welcome summer rain.
All around, a city of labour camps stretches out in the middle of the Arabian desert, a jumble of low, concrete barracks, corrugated iron, chicken-mesh walls, barbed wire, scrap metal, empty paint cans, rusted machinery and thousands of men with tired and gloomy faces.
I have left Dubai's spiralling towers, man-made islands and mega-malls behind and driven through the desert to the outskirts of the neighbouring city of Abu Dhabi. Turn right before the Zaha Hadid bridge, and a few hundred metres takes you to the heart of Mousafah, a ghetto-like neighbourhood of camps hidden away from the eyes of tourists. It is just one of many areas around the Gulf set aside for an army of labourers building the icons of architecture that are mushrooming all over the region.
Behind the showers, in a yard paved with metal sheets, a line of men stands silently in front of grease-blackened pans, preparing their dinner. Sweat rolls down their heads and necks, their soaked shirts stuck to their backs. A heavy smell of spices and body odour fills the air.
Next to a heap of rubbish, a man holds a plate containing his meal: a few chillies, an onion and three tomatoes, to be fried with spices and eaten with a piece of bread.
In a neighbouring camp, a group of Pakistani workers from north and south Waziristan sit exhaustedly sipping tea while one of them cooks outside. In the middle of the cramped room in which 10 men sleep, one worker in a filthy robe sits on the floor grinding garlic and onions with a mortar and pestle while staring into the void.
Hamidullah, a thin Afghan from Maydan, a village on the outskirts of Kabul, tells me: "I spent five years in Iran and one year here, and one year here feels like 10 years. When I left Afghanistan I thought I would be back in a few months, but now I don't know when I will be back." Another worker on a bunk bed next to him adds: "He called his home yesterday and they told him that three people from his village were killed in fighting. This is why we are here."
Hamidullah earns around 450 dirhams (£70) a month as a construction worker.
How is life, I ask.
"What life? We have no life here. We are prisoners. We wake up at five, arrive to work at seven and are back at the camp at nine in the evening, day in and day out."
Outside in the yard, another man sits on a chair made of salvaged wood, in front of a broken mirror, a plastic sheet wrapped around his neck, while the camp barber trims his thick beard. Despite the air of misery, tonight is a night of celebration. One of the men is back from a two-week break in his home village in Pakistan, bringing with him a big sack of rice, and is cooking pilau rice with meat. Rice is affordable at weekends only: already wretched incomes have been eroded by the weak dollar and rising food prices. "Life is worse now," one worker told me. "Before, we could get by on 140 dirhams [£22] a month; now we need 320 to 350."
The dozen or so men sit on newspapers advertising luxury watches, mobile phones and high-rise towers. When three plastic trays arrive, filled with yellowish rice and tiny cubes of meat, each offers the rare shreds of meat to his neighbours.
All of these men are part of a huge scam that is helping the construction boom in the Gulf. Like hundreds of thousands of migrant workers, they each paid more than £1,000 to employment agents in India and Pakistan. They were promised double the wages they are actually getting, plus plane tickets to visit their families once a year, but none of the men in the room had actually read their contract. Only two of them knew how to read.
"They lied to us," a worker with a long beard says. "They told us lies to bring us here. Some of us sold their land; others took big loans to come and work here."
Once they arrive in the United Arab Emirates, migrant workers are treated little better than cattle, with no access to healthcare and many other basic rights. The company that sponsors them holds on to their passports - and often a month or two of their wages to make sure that they keep working. And for this some will earn just 400 dirhams (£62) a month.
A group of construction engineers told me, with no apparent shame, that if a worker becomes too ill to work he will be sent home after a few days. "They are the cheapest commodity here. Steel, concrete, everything is up, but workers are the same."
As they eat, the men talk more about their lives. "My shift is eight hours and two overtime, but in reality we work 18 hours," one says. "The supervisors treat us like animals. I don't know if the owners [of the company] know."
"There is no war, and the police treat us well," another chips in, "but the salary is not good."
"That man hasn't been home for four years," says Ahmad, the chef for the night, pointing at a well-built young man. "He has no money to pay for the flight."
A steel worker says he doesn't know who is supposed to pay for his ticket back home. At the recruiting agency they told him it would be the construction company - but he didn't get anything in writing.
One experienced worker with spectacles and a prayer cap on his head tells me that things are much better than they used to be. Five years ago, when he first came, the company gave him nothing. There was no air conditioning in the room and sometimes no electricity. "Now, they give AC to each room and a mattress for each worker."
Immigrant workers have no right to form unions, but that didn't stop strikes and riots spreading across the region recently - something unheard of few years ago. Elsewhere in Mousafah, I encounter one of the very few illegal unions, where workers have established a form of underground insurance scheme, based on the tribal structure back home. "When we come here," one member of the scheme tells me, "we register with our tribal elders, and when one of us is injured and is sent home, or dies, the elders collect 30 dirhams from each of us and send the money home to his family."
In a way, the men at Mousafah are the lucky ones. Down in the Diera quarter of old Dubai, where many of the city's illegal workers live, 20 men are often crammed into one small room.
UN agencies estimate that there are up to 300,000 illegal workers in the emirates.
On another hot evening, hundreds of men congregate in filthy alleyways at the end of a day's work, sipping tea and sitting on broken chairs. One man rests his back on the handles of his pushcart, silently eating his dinner next to a huge pile of garbage.
In one of the houses, a man is hanging his laundry over the kitchen sink, a reeking smell coming from a nearby toilet. Next door, men lie on the floor. They tell me they are all illegal and they are scared and that I have to leave.
Outside, a fistfight breaks out between Pakistani workers and Sri Lankans.
The alleyways are dotted with sweatshops, where Indian men stay until late at night, bending over small tables sewing on beads.
A couple of miles away, the slave market becomes more ugly. Outside a glitzy hotel, with a marble and glass facade, dozens of prostitutes congregate according to their ethnic groups: Asians to the right, next to them Africans, and, on the left, blondes from the former Soviet Union. There are some Arab women. Iranians, I am told, are in great demand. They charge much higher prices and are found only in luxury hotels.
Like the rest of the Gulf region, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are being built by expat workers. They are strictly segregated, and a hierarchy worthy of previous centuries prevails.
At the top, floating around in their black or white robes, are the locals with their oil money. Immaculate and pampered, they own everything. Outside the "free zones", where the rules are looser, no one can start a business in the UAE without a partner from the emirates, who often does nothing apart from lending his name. No one can get a work permit without a local sponsor.
Under the locals come the western foreigners, the experts and advisers, making double the salaries they make back home, all tax free. Beneath them are the Arabs - Lebanese and Palestinians, Egyptians and Syrians. What unites these groups is a mixture of pretension and racism.
"Unrealistic things happen to your mind when you come here," a Lebanese woman who frequently visits Dubai tells me as she drives her new black SUV. "Suddenly, you can make $5,000 [£2,800] a month. You can get credit so easy, you buy the car of your dreams, you shop and you think it's a great bargain; when you go to dinner, you go to a hotel ... nowhere else can you live like this."
Down at the base of the pyramid are the labourers, waiters, hotel employees and unskilled workers from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, the Philippines and beyond. They move deferentially around the huge malls, cafes, bars and restaurants, bowing down and calling people sir and madam. In the middle of the day, during the hottest hours, you can see them sleeping in public gardens under trees, or on the marble floors of the Dubai Mosque, on benches or pieces of cardboard on side streets. These are the victims of the racism that is not only flourishing in the UAE but is increasingly being exported to the rest of the Middle East. Sometimes it reminds you of the American south in the 1930s.
One evening in Abu Dhabi, I have dinner with my friend Ali, a charming Iraqi engineer whom I have known for two decades. After the meal, as his wife serves saffron-flavoured tea, he pushes back his chair and lights a cigar. We talk about stock markets, investment and the Middle East, and then the issue of race comes up.
"We will never use the new metro if it's not segregated," he tells me, referring to the state-of-the-art underground system being built in neighbouring Dubai. "We will never sit next to Indians and Pakistanis with their smell," his wife explains.
Not for the first time, I am told that while the immigrant workers are living in appalling conditions, they would be even worse off back home - as if poverty in one place can justify exploitation in the other.
"We need slaves," my friend says. "We need slaves to build monuments. Look who built the pyramids - they were slaves."
Sharla Musabih, a human rights campaigner who runs the City of Hope shelter for abused women, is familiar with such sentiments. "Once you get rich on the back of the poor," she says, "it's not easy to let go of that lifestyle. They are devaluing human beings," she says. "The workers might eat once a day back home, but they have their family around them, they have respect. They are not asking for a room in a hotel - all they are asking for is respect for their humanity."
Towards the end of another day, on a fabulous sandy beach near the Dubai marina, the waves wash calmly over the beautiful sand. A couple are paragliding over the blue sea; on the new islands, gigantic concrete structures stand like spaceships. As tourists laze on the beach, Filipino, Indian and Pakistani workers, stand silently watching from a dune, cut off from the holidaymakers by an invisible wall.
Behind them rise more brand-new towers.
"It's a Green Zone mentality," a young Arab working in IT tells me. "People come to make money. They live in bubbles. They all want to make as much money as possible and leave."
Back at the Mousafah camps, a Pakistani worker walks me through his neighbourhood. On both sides of the dusty lane stand concrete barracks and the familiar detritus: raw sewage, garbage, scrap metal. A man washes his car, and in a cage chickens flutter up and down.
We enter one of the rooms, flip-flops piled by the door.
Inside, a steelworker gets a pile of papers from a plastic envelope and shoves them into my lap. He is suing the company that employed him for unpaid wages. "I've been going to court for three months, and every time I go they tell me to come in two weeks." His friends nod their heads. "Last time the [company] lawyer told me, 'I am in the law here - you will not get anything."
Economically, Dubai has progressed a lot in the past 10 years, but socially it has stayed behind," says Musabih. "Labour conditions are like America in the 19th century - but that's not acceptable in the 21st century

Dubai’s skyline is set to become more dramatic after property developer Nakheel on Sunday announced plans for a kilometre-high tower complex. The tower, which will become the centrepiece of a 270-hectare community in the heart of ‘New Dubai’ near Jebel Ali, will surpass Burj Dubai’s estimated final height of about 800m.

The tower, which will become the centrepiece of a 270-hectare community in the heart of ‘New Dubai’ near Jebel Ali, will surpass Burj Dubai’s estimated final height of about 800mIt will take more than 10 years to complete at an expected cost of about Dh140 billion.

Nakheel Harbour & Tower, inspired by Islamic design and featuring the world’s only inner city harbour, was launched at a VIP event attended by Dubai’s Crown Prince Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and hosted by Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of Dubai World, which owns Nakheel.

Nakheel CEO Chris O’Donnell would not reveal the tower’s final height and was cautious about calling it the world’s tallest ahead of numerous other proposals, including the ‘mile high tower’ in Jeddah planned by Kingdom Holdings.

“It may be the tallest tower. You don’t have to be the tallest tower, you just have to be an iconic development,” he said.

The tower, to be located on the corner of the Arabian Canal and Shaikh Zayed Road, will be come home to more than 55,000 people, a work place for 45,000 more and is expected to attract millions of visitors a year.

O’Donnell would not give the exact cost of the development but was confident of funding which, he said, would be drawn from Nakheel’s overall project financing.

“It will be a combination of pre-sales of land in and around the tower, and then project funding,” O’Donnell said.

He said the global economic climate would drive a fight among financiers and banks for quality investments such as Nakheel.

The developers’ good relations with top international banks would continue to be a source for funding “including some that are now parts of other banks as well — but that’s okay”, he said.

The foundation work is already under way and is expected to take two to three years.

Architects Woods Bagot and engineers WSP group are involved in the development.

Nakheel Tower will have four individual towers within a single structure.

A crescent-shaped podium will encircle the base. The development will incorporate elements of historic Islamic cities — the gardens of Alhambra in Spain, the harbour of Alexandria in Egypt, the promenade of Tangier in Morocco and the bridges of Isfahan in Iran.

It will be surrounded by 40 smaller high-rise buildings, ranging from 20 to 90 floors.

The development will include 3,400 hotel rooms and a luxury hotel unit near the pinnacle of the tower.
