My mind is my home

A renowned Burmese meditation master explores how to have nothing and everything

ေက်းဇူးေတာ္ရွင္ဆရာေတာ္ဦးေဇာတိက
So what do you get when you combine a Buddhist meditation master and a warrior code? Answer: Nothing and everything.
Or, if you prefer, lots to think about.
Sayadaw U Jotika from Burma took an early dislike to an anonymous poem from around the 14th century that's best known as The Samurai's Creed, he told a packed audience at a recent dhamma talk in Bangkok. (Sayadaw is a Burmese honorific for a highly respected senior monk.)
But the verses' pared-down simplicity and unlikely-sounding combinations eventually wore down that resistance and grew to captivate the 62-year-old teacher, whose ideas are readily available in Burma on CDs, in books and even adorning the walls of the Lucky Seven Tea Shop in Rangoon.
More Thais and Westerners are also discovering the psychological insight and playful provocations of an adamantly independent thinker who cites love of knowledge _ or understanding _ as his main motivation for getting up in the morning.
Questions around how to live a good life and be a decent person come close second, along with the conundrum of how to combine a love of solitude with an intense desire to communicate.
The latter was a running theme in the Sayadaw's early book, Snow in the Summer, available in English and Thai from local publisher DMG Books.
Based on a collection of highly personal letters written from a remote monastery to Western friends, and first published more than 10 years ago, the book is a revealing and honest exploration of an intense inner life.
"Sometimes I am afraid when people read this book they will find out too much about me," the monk said with a smile in Bangkok.
Sayadaw U Jotika's next book in English and Thai will be a translation from the Burmese, My Mind is My Home, which explores a series of paradoxes around having nothing _ and everything.
He gave the Bangkok audience a preview of the ideas in a talk whose key points are briefly summarised here, though this short condensed sampling cannot do justice to the subtleties, elaborations and enjoyments that were part of the actual occasion.
The poem begins:
- I have no parents. I make heaven and earth my parents.
This means that it was not just your parents who created you. They could not do that on their own. It was the whole universe that gave birth to you, it was nature, and your karma.
When you think about these lines, it makes you feel connected to the whole universe, and that feeling is really amazing. It's a very wonderful feeling.
When I was meditating in the forest for long periods, without even books for company (the hardest thing for me), I was keeping my mind in the moment.
So the mind becomes almost empty and calm ... it expands ... it becomes free. You forget about yourself.
Suddenly I felt like I was connected with the whole universe. I was not living in the world, I was living in the universe, I felt connected to even the trees, birds, animals, everybody, the stars and moon.
That was a very powerful experience in my life.
These days people feel more and more isolated. They don't feel connected, maybe not even with family members. But when you get into this feeling of being connected to the whole universe, you don't feel lonely any more.
To overcome loneliness, first learn to meditate, to live in the moment. Living like this, your mind becomes very peaceful, very calm, very strong. Mindfulness makes you very strong. You will develop inner strength.
- I have no home. I make mindfulness my home.
When I first read these lines, I felt so happy. I felt this is true, so true.
If you are not mindful, what happens to your mind? Your mind just wanders around, it has no place to rest.
You may have a big house physically, but mentally you may be homeless.
When you practice mindfulness, if you keep practicing for long time diligently, you will come to the point that you know that you know. You know that you are seeing, you know that you are hearing, you know that you are talking.
And then thinking stops, and the mind is quiet, and though it is quiet, there is still this knowing.
It is called awareness of awareness, and at that point you feel a kind of energy and power.
I had a young student who practiced meditation for a few years before she came to me to tell me she had a special meditation experience, when she became aware that she was aware. At that moment, she said, "I felt that I had become a real human being."
And I replied, "Oh, this is something really wonderful, so beautiful also, to feel that you have become a full human being."
- I have no life and death. I make the tides of breathing my life and death.
You will understand this verse only if you meditate.
When you are really mindful you are not thinking any more. You can only think about the past and the future _ you can never think about the present.
The present is so short there is no time to think about it. The moment you think about the present you are already in the past.
When you meditate, you pay attention to breathing. First, you think about breathing in ... breathing out ... But as you continue you realise there are many smaller bits and pieces of awareness, of processes, going on.
So the more mindful you become, the shorter the present becomes. The more you see that whatever you pay attention to, it arises at that moment and it passes away immediately. It is very short, and that is life and death. Life and death is so short.
This verse is very profound. Only a mediator knows that death is very near, and only if you have experienced how every phenomenon occurs in this moment, arising and passing away, will you understand what this means.
- I have no divine power. I make honesty my divine power.
The best way to have anything you want in life is to get it in an honest way. First, to be honest with other people.
Yet sometimes we can be honest with others but dishonest with ourselves. Self-deception is very subtle, dangerous and hard to overcome.
You will really find out about self deception when you pay attention to your thoughts and feelings.
If we deceive anybody, including ourselves, we cannot make real progress in meditation. It is a big hindrance.
So when you really pay attention to your mind, and see how the mind works, what it is thinking and feeling, if we see "I am greedy," just see it. Don't try to justify it, just see the plain truth, "I am greedy."
If you are angry, look at your mind and see "I am angry." Don't try to justify it. Just observe the truth.
Then you can make real progress in your meditation practice and that leads to liberation.
To overcome anything first we must see it, we must pay full attention.
Attention itself is purifying. This is very powerful, you know.
- I have no friends. I make my mind my friend.
See how beautiful and how true it is. If your mind is not your friend, then I don't think you can have any friends. If you are your own enemy, how can you make friends with anybody else?
How can you make your mind your real friend? By practicing mindfulness. By really watching your mind, by really paying attention to what you are thinking, feeling, at any moment, throughout the day, you will see the truth about your mind, and only when you see the truth, gradually it will become purer, and it will become your friend.
- I have no enemy. I make carelessness my enemy.
When we really think of it, our real enemy is not out there, outside. It's inside, in not paying attention, not knowing.
The word "carelessness" has many synonyms. Heedlessness is one, the opposite of mindfulness. Forgetfulness is another.
Carelessness really degrades our life and degrades our mind. Mindfulness, awareness and attention upgrade and uplift the mind.
- I have no sword. I make absence of self my sword.
You know, ego always feels insecure. Ego is always trying to prove itself.
When people who practice vipassana meditation develop really good mindfulness, they see that there is only physical process and mental process going on.
There is only process; no person, no being, no ego. This is really difficult, but if you practice, you see for yourself.
And when you see for this yourself, you don't feel so afraid any more. Some people when they really develop vipassana inside, are not even afraid to die. They pass away very calmly, peacefully.

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL'S REMARKS ON MYANMAR TO DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS,
UNITED NATIONS AGENCIES, INTERNATIONAL AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS

Yangon, 4 July 2009

Excellencies,Distinguished guests and colleagues

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This is my second visit to Myanmar in just over a year. Both visits have been at critical times for the country’s future.

My first visit was in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis. This devastating natural disaster, which took so many lives and created so much hardship, touched hearts across the globe. In Myanmar’s moment of need, the world responded generously.

I want to personally thank everyone here today for your remarkable contributions to the relief and recovery effort.

You have saved lives, rejuvenated communities and made it possible for many thousands of people to reclaim their livelihoods. You have helped Myanmar to overcome adversity. It is important that this work continues.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I felt the tragedy of Cyclone Nargis deeply -- as a fellow Asian and as Secretary-General .

I am Asia’s second Secretary-General. The first was Myanmar's U Thant. I revere his memory. I also recall his wise words.

U Thant said: “The worth of the individual human being is the most unique and precious of all our assets and must be the beginning and end of all our efforts. Governments, systems, ideologies and institutions come and go, but humanity remains.”

This is why I have returned.

As Secretary-General, I attach the highest importance to helping the people of this country to achieve their legitimate aspirations.

The United Nations works for people – their rights, their well-being, their dignity. It is not an option. It is our responsibility.

I have come to show the unequivocal shared commitment of the United Nations to the people of Myanmar.

I am here today to say: Myanmar – you are not alone.

We want to work with you for a united, peaceful, prosperous, democratic and modern Myanmar.

We want to help you rise from poverty.

We want to work with you so your country can take its place as a respected and responsible member of the international community.

We want to help you achieve national reconciliation, durable peace and sustainable development.

But, let me emphasize: neither peace nor development can thrive without democracy and respect for human rights.

Myanmar is no exception.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The challenges are many. But they are not insurmountable.

We know from experience that securing Myanmar’s peaceful, democratic and prosperous future is a complex process.

None of Myanmar’s challenges can be solved on their own. Peace, development and human rights are closely inter-related.

Failure to address them with equal attention will risk undermining the prospects for democracy, durable peace and prosperity.

However, we also know that where there is a genuine will for dialogue and reconciliation, all obstacles can be overcome.

The question today is this: how much longer can Myanmar afford to wait for national reconciliation, democratic transition and full respect for human rights?

The cost of delay will be counted in wasted lives, lost opportunities and prolonged isolation from the international community.

Let me be clear: all the people of Myanmar must work in the national interest.

I said this yesterday when I met with representatives of Myanmar’s registered political parties and with those armed groups that have chosen to observe a cease-fire. I encouraged them respectively to honour their commitments to the democratic process and peace.

Nonetheless, the primary responsibility lies with the Government to move the country towards its stated goals of national reconciliation and democracy.

Failure to do so will prevent the people of Myanmar from realizing their full potential.

Failure to do so will deny the people of Myanmar their right to live in dignity and to pursue better standards of life in larger freedom.

These principles lie at the core of the United Nations Charter, whose opening words are “We the peoples”.

The founding Constitution of independent Myanmar echoes these noble words. We must work together to ensure that Myanmar’s future embodies these principles too.

With this in mind, I bring three messages.

First, respect for human dignity is the precondition for peace and development everywhere.

Myanmar was one of the first United Nations Member States to adopt the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

It subscribed early on to the consensus that respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms is indispensable to political, economic and social progress.

Unfortunately, that commitment has not been matched in deed. Myanmar’s human rights record remains a matter of grave concern.

The Government has articulated its goals as stability, national reconciliation and democracy.

The upcoming election –the first in twenty years – must be inclusive, participatory and transparent if it is to be credible.

Myanmar’s way forward must be rooted in respect for human rights.

This is why I say that all political prisoners, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, should be released without delay.

When I met General Than Shwe yesterday and today, I asked to visit Ms.
Suu Kyi. I am deeply disappointed that he refused.

I believe the government of Myanmar has lost a unique opportunity to show its commitment to a new era of political openness.

Allowing a visit to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi would have been an important symbol of the government’s willingness to embark on the kind of meaningful engagement that will be essential if the elections in 2010 are to be seen as credible.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi must be allowed to participate in the political process without further delay.

Indeed, all the citizens of Myanmar must be given the opportunity to contribute fully to the future of this country.

National reconciliation cannot be complete without the free and active participation of all who seek to contribute.

The country must embark on a process of genuine dialogue that includes all concerned parties, all ethnic groups and all minorities.

People must be free to debate and to engage in political dialogue, and they must have free access to the information that will help them participate meaningfully in the democratic process.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Any transition is difficult. Myanmar has already undergone transitions from sovereign kingdom, to occupied colony, and now independent State.

This history carries a twin legacy of armed conflict and political deadlock, including recent painful events: the repression of demonstrators in 1988, the cancellation of the 1990 election results, and the clampdown on peaceful dissent that continues to this day.

At the same time, there have been some positive efforts that should be recognized.

Although still fragile, the cease-fire agreements between the Government and armed groups have reduced the level of conflict. The United Nations has wide-ranging experience in making such gains irreversible.

Sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity are legitimate concerns for any government.

We contend that opening and broadening the political space is the best way to ensure that each group and each individual becomes part of the greater collective project.

The military, all political parties, ethnic minority groups, civil society, and indeed every son and daughter of Myanmar has a role to play in this country’s transition.

Only mutual compromise, respect and understanding can lay the foundations for durable peace, national reconciliation and democracy.

My second message is on addressing the humanitarian needs of Myanmar’s people.

I am glad I have been able to return to see the progress made in the Irrawaddy Delta. The loss of some 130,000 people was tragic, but the rebuilding I saw today was impressive.

The tragedy showed the resilience of the people of Myanmar. It also demonstrated that people throughout the world care deeply about Myanmar and its people.

Above all, the response to Cyclone Nargis proved the value of engagement over isolation.

The unprecedented cooperation between Myanmar, the United Nations and ASEAN through the Tripartite Core Group, with the support of the donor community, has demonstrated that humanitarian imperatives and the principles of sovereignty do not conflict.

Humanitarian assistance -- in Myanmar as elsewhere -- should never be held hostage to political considerations. We can and must work together to ensure access to humanitarian and development assistance to all those in Myanmar who need it.

This brings me to my third message. It is time for Myanmar to unleash its economic potential.

Myanmar sits in the middle of Asia’s economic miracle. Harnessing Myanmar to the rapid advances taking place around it is the surest way to raise living standards.

I welcome the Government’s policy of opening up to outside trade and investment, and its efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, control HIV, combat human trafficking and curtail opium production.

But the reality is that millions continue to live in poverty. Standards of living in Myanmar remain among the lowest in Asia.

The people of Myanmar need jobs, they need food security and they need access to health care.

We must work to ensure that the people of Myanmar can benefit from and contribute to the regional and global economy.

We must recognize that the region and the world have much to gain from a stable, prosperous and democratic Myanmar. We must work together for that goal.

The Government of Myanmar must seize the moment.

It must take advantage of the opportunities that the international community is prepared to offer to the people of Myanmar.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I came here as a friend.

My duty is to uphold the ideals and principles of the United Nations Charter.

My role is to encourage all of you – the Government, political parties, ethnic groups, civil society – to move forward together as one people and one nation.

Nothing is insurmountable or impossible when the people’s interest is placed above divisions.

The region and the world are changing fast. Myanmar only stands to gain from engagement -- and from embarking on its own change.

The Government of Myanmar has repeatedly stated that cooperation with the United Nations is the cornerstone of the country’s foreign policy.

We ask it to match deeds with words.

The more Myanmar works in partnership with the United Nations to respond to its people’s needs and aspirations, the more it affirms its sovereignty.

Similarly it is incumbent on the international community as whole to work together to help Myanmar meet our shared goals: a united, peaceful, prosperous and democratic future, with full respect for the human rights of all the country’s people.

မူရင္းသတင္းေလးပါ...

Life without limb-its: The astonishing story of the man born without arms or legs... who plays golf, surfs, and swims

Nick Vujicic was born with no arms or legs - but he doesn't let the details stop him.

The brave 26-year-old - who is mainly torso - plays football and golf, swims, and surfs, despite having no limbs.

Nick has a small foot on his left hip which helps him balance and enables him to kick.

He uses his one foot to type, write with a pen and pick things up between his toes.

'I call it my chicken drumstick,' joked Nick, who was born in Melbourne, Australia, but now lives in Los Angeles. 'I'd be lost without it.

'When I get in the water I float because 80 per cent of my body is lungs and my drumstick acts as a propeller.'

Due to his faith as an Evangelical Christian, Nick has chosen to remain a virgin until marriage although he has had long-term girlfriends in the past.

'He's very modest but he gets marriage proposals from women all the time,' said Nick's friend and publicist Steve Appel, from Los Angeles.

'He would love to get married and start a family but he's waiting for the right girl to come along.'

When Nick was born his father was so shocked he left the hospital room to vomit. His distraught mother couldn't bring herself to hold him until he was four months old.

His disability came without any medical explanation - a rare occurrence called Phocomelia - and Nick and his parents spent many years asking why this cruel trick would happen to them.

'My mother was a nurse and she did everything right during pregnancy but she still blamed herself,' he said.

'It was so hard for them but right from the start they did their best to make me independent.

'My dad put me in the water at 18 months and gave the courage to learn how to swim.

'I also got really into football and skateboarding. I totally love the English Premier League.'

Nick's father was a computer programmer and accountant and he taught his little son how to type with his toe at just 6 years old.

His mum invented a special plastic device that meant he could hold a pen and pencil.

Despite the risk of bullying, his parents insisted Nick attended mainstream school.

'It was the best decision they could have made for me,' adds Nick, who later achieved a degree in Financial Planning and Real Estate. 'It was very hard but it gave me independence.'

Nick, who was teased and bullied, had an electric wheelchair for mobility, and a team of carers to help him.

'I was deeply depressed when I was eight years old,' he said. 'I went to my mum crying and told her I wanted to kill myself.

'I felt cold and bitter. I hated God for doing this to me and was terrified of what would happen when my parents weren't there to look after me.

'I could brush my own teeth with a wall mounted brush and wash my own hair with pump action soap, but there was so much that was impossible for me.'

At age ten Nick, tried to drown himself in the bath but luckily the attempt was unsuccessful.

'I felt there was no purpose when you lack purpose and strength it is hard to hold on,' he said.

But with the help of his religion, friends and family, Nick managed to pull through to become an international symbol of triumph over adversity.

The football fan is now a motivational speaker and has travelled to over 24 countries speaking to groups of up to 110,000 people.

'When I was 13 I read a newspaper article about a disabled man who had managed to achieve great things and help others,' said Nick, who also plays golf with the club tucked under his chin.

'I realised why God had made us like this - to give hope to others. It was so inspirational to me that I decided to use my life to encourage other people and give them the courage that the article had given me.

'I decided to be thankful for what I do have, not get angry about what I don't.

'I looked at myself in the mirror and said: 'You know what the world is right that I have no arms or legs, but they'll never take away the beauty of my eyes.' I wanted to concentrate on something good that I had.'

In 1990 Nick won the Australian Young Citizen of the Year award for his bravery and perseverance.

'When kids run up to me and ask 'what happened?' I just lean over and whisper 'cigarettes', he laughed.

'And once I was in a car and this girl at traffic lights was giving me the eye. She could only see my head so I decided to do a 360 in the car seat to freak her out.

'Her face was like woooooooah what is going on? She sped off really quickly.'

Nick began travelling the world and in 2008 he went to Hawaii and met surfing master Bethany Hamilton, who had her arm bitten off by a shark when she was 12.

'She was amazing, said Nick. 'She taught me how to surf and I was terrified at first, but once I got up there it felt absolutely fantastic and I caught some waves pretty well.'

Nick quickly learned how to do three 360 degree spins on his board - a feat that got him on the cover of Surfer magazine within 48 hours.

'No one has ever done that in the history of surfing,' he said.

'But I have a very low centre of gravity so I've got pretty good balance.'

He moved to Los Angeles two years ago and plans to continue to travel the world - this year he will visit South America and the Middle East.

'I tell people to keep on getting up when they fall and to always love themselves,' he said.

'If I can encourage just one person then my job in this life is done.'

Jacko will be buried in a rare $ 25,000 14-carat gold plated casket, according to US reports.
The custom-made solid bronze coffin - called a Promethean - has been ordered from the Batesville Casket Company, celebrity news website TMZ claims.
It will feature a flame blue velvet interior and a hand-polished, mirror finish.
It is the same type of casket used to bury legendary singer James Brown in December 2006
and is extremely rare. .
Jacko attended Brown's funeral and kissed The Godfather of Soul's head while he lay in his coffin.

It's Not Love, Its Something Else...

If you love someone because you think that he or she is really gorgeous...
then it's not love..
it's - Infatuation...

If you love someone because you think that you shouldn't leave him because others think that you shouldn't...
then it's not love..
it's - Compromise...

If you love someone because you think that you cannot live with out his touch....
then it's not love..
it's - Lust...

If you love someone because you have been kissed by him...
then it's not love..
it's - Inferiority Complex...

If you love someone because you cannot leave him thinking that it would hurt his feelings..
then it's not love..
it's - Charity...

If you love someone because you share every thing with him...
then it's not love..
it's - Friendship...

but if you feel the pain of the other person more than him even when he is stable
and you cry for him..
that's - LOVE...

A newly built 13-storey residential building collapsed in Shanghai yesterday, killing one worker.

The block of high-rise flats toppled onto its side in the muddy construction site raising concerns that building safety standards are being overlooked in favour of fast construction in China's rush to modernise.

The building appeared to be almost complete with fitted windows and a finished, tiled facade. Other similar-looking blocks in the same property development were still standing nearby.

Residents gather to take photos of the collapsed building from across the river
Shoddy construction and the use of sub-standard materials is a concern in China's construction sector as the country scrambles to build out cities and finish massive infrastructure projects to keep pace with fast economic growth.

Construction-related accidents last year included the collapse of a steel arch on a new railway bridge, which killed at least seven and a crane which fell on a nursery school killing five.

The collapse of dozens of schools during last year's Sichuan earthquake also led to a wave of public outrage about corrupt officials and construction firms.
