It would be lovely to hail this as a landmark victory for press freedom in the UAE:

Abu Dhabi/Dubai: In a victory for freedom of the press in the UAE, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, yesterday issued instructions that journalists in the country will not be jailed for doing their work.

The announcement was made by Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister and Chairman of the National Media Council (NMC).

Shaikh Abdullah said Shaikh Mohammad issued instructions that no journalist is to be jailed for reasons related to his work, adding that there are other measures that may be taken against journalists who break the press and publication law, but not jail, WAM reported.

Except for the fact that "other measures" sounds infinitely more terrifying than a free stay at the Al Wathba Hilton*.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Bill Gates set a conference abuzz when he opened a jar of mosquitoes onstage to make a point about malaria prevention.

"There's no reason only poor people should have the experience," the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft said at the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference Wednesday in Long Beach.

Audience members including technology leaders laughed nervously as the insects swarmed across the auditorium. Gates assured them that the bugs were not carrying malaria.

Gates talked about his philanthropic foundation's fight against malaria, a preventable and treatable disease that kills more than 1 million people a year, mostly in Africa.

Gates said fighting the disease must be a higher priority.

"There is more money put into baldness drugs than into malaria," Gates said.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $1.4 billion to fight malaria and is backing a vaccine that could reduce deaths by more than two-thirds if it is effective, he said.

A DAD of four has survived a lightning strike — the FOURTH time he has cheated death.

The bolt hit a metal button on hunter Kent Lilyerd’s cap and exploded bullets in his pocket.

But Kent, 47, had just two days in hospital.


He has previously survived falling in a frozen lake, getting electrocuted while welding and being shot by fellow duck hunters in Mora, Minnesota.
