It's ruled by a group of monks who represent the 20 monasteries in Athos. Since 1045, the monks have forbidden women to set foot on their land!
It isn't only human women who are not permitted in Athos, but females of all animal species. Only recently have exceptions been made — in the case of hens and female cats!
A monk who lived in Athos was probably the only man in history who never laid eyes on a single female throughout his life. The monk, Mihailo Tolotos, lost his mother the day he was born, and was taken to the monastery the next day.

Shocked vets have delivered a kitten with two faces.
The kitten can only eat with one of its mouths, due to a cleft palate - but it meows simultaneously through both.
The only member of an otherwise normal litter of three, it is said to be doing well.
It was born in the vet's surgery after its mother developed complications during the birth.Nurse Louisa Burgess, who delivered the kitten in Perth, Western Australia, with vet George Huber, said she had never seen a two-faced cat in 12 years of working in animal health.
'I have seen cats with two tails and extra legs, but not this,' she said.
'It has a full tummy and it survived the night so that is a good sign. It seems content, it meows and purrs.'

Ms Burgess added: 'This is the result of a congenital deformity. Something has gone wrong in the early embryonic development.'
One in a million cats is born with two heads.
The owners plan to keep the kitten and are said to be considering calling it Mr Men or Quasi Modo, according to Australian website InMyCommunity.com.au.
By coincidence there has been another report of a two-faced kitten in the US this year. Born in Texas in February, it was part of a litter of seven.
In August a kitten with four eyes, two noses and one mouth was born in Ohio, but it died after five days.

Ras Al Khaimah: A 25-year-old Asian maid has alleged that the 62-year-old father of her employer raped her in a remote area of Al Munaie here.
Police arrested the suspect identified as A.S. and during the initial investigations, the suspect allegedly confessed to have fallen in love with the maid, who refused to have any relationship with him.
The employer and family had gone out of the house when his father allegedly forced himself on her.
The maid informed the police of the incident after which they arrested the suspect.
The Public Prosecution pressed charges against the suspect and referred him to the Criminal Court. During the first court hearing, the suspect denied the charges and claimed the maid had been trying to seduce him to have sex for money, which he refused to accept.

The suspect accused the maid had sex with her ex-employers for money, adding that she changed three employers in the past six months. The court posted the case for November 25 for questioning the victim who did not show up at the court in the first hearing.
Meanwhile, the court sentenced a woman and her lover to three months' jail each and to be lashed 100 times each for having an illicit affair, resulting in the birth of a baby girl. A senior court official said the woman gave birth to the girl in prison after being arrested in an advanced stage of pregnancy.

The filly had to be cut free with a chainsaw after getting her head stuck in a TREE in Pullman, West Virginia, US.
Mr Harschbarger, who took this snap before cutting the tree, said she escaped with only minor injuries.
He said: “She has a few cuts on her face and ear.
"Last I heard her jaw was a little dislocated but I think it is healing up and she can eat on her own again.”
What a silly filly!

             A DEADLY crocodile lazes in the sun — as KIDDIES climb on its back.

Parents think nothing of letting youngsters play with monster reptiles hailed in their village as sacred.

They insist 100 of the crocs who have made their home in a desert oasis pond NEVER eat humans.
But just to make sure, they keep the bellies of their “pets” stuffed by breeding chickens for their witchdoctor to sacrifice to them daily.

The Nile crocodiles grow up to 20ft long. But it is only thanks to their thrashing around that the villagers’ vital source of water continues to exist at all after hundreds of years.

Oliver explained: “These crocodiles are completely wild and contribute to the preservation of the pool.

First it was camels. Now Saudi Arabia has held its first "beautiful goat" pageant.
Owners of pedigree "Najdi" goats from around the Gulf region converged on Riyadh this week, hoping to win the prize for top male and female goat, following in the footsteps of lucrative camel competitions which have taken off in recent years.
"The Najdi goat is a pure national product like nothing else in the world," said Sheikh Faisal Al Saadoun, a leading Saudi breeder who organised the show.
"They are different in terms of beauty, shape and how eye-catching they are."
The goats are named after the central Najd region of Saudi Arabia, where the goats have a distinctive highnose bridge and shaggy hair with a fine, silky quality.
They were given a thorough shampoo for the show, according to the official web site which displayed the winners.
Most of the goats in the competition were bred from one star goat, Burgan (Volcano), from Saadoun's stable and have been exported around the Gulf in trade worth millions of riyals. Burgan was not on display at the show as the owners fear he could be afflicted by the "evil eye". But that did not stop offers from the Qatari royal family to buy him, the compere told the gathering.
Saadoun sold dozens of goats from his stable for at least 100,000 riyals ($26,000) each at the show, adding to some 8 million riyals he has made over the years breeding from Burgan.
"This male goat is different. He is historic and he has contributed to developing the Najdi goat," he told Reuters, as poets recited odes in praise of the goats over loud speakers.
The winner in the male category was a son of Burgan with a value of 450,000 riyals.
The gathering at a ranch outside Riyadh gave breeders a chance to trade but Abu Ahmed, a breeder from the United Arab Emirates, was disappointed that Saadoun did not take his offer of 350,000 riyals for a one son of Burgan.
"I wanted to develop the breed from the point it has got to," he said. -
