TEHRAN: A senior Iranian cleric has claimed that dolled-up women incite extramarital sex, causing more earthquakes in Iran, a country that straddles several fault lines, newspapers reported on Saturday.
"Many women who dress inappropriately ... cause youths to go astray, taint their chastity and incite extramarital sex in society, which increases earthquakes," Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi told worshippers at Tehran Friday prayer.
"Calamities are the result of people's deeds," he was quoted as saying by reformist Aftab-e Yazd newspaper. "We have no way but conform to Islam to ward off dangers."The Islamic dress code is mandatory in Iran, which has been under clerical rule for more than three decades.
Every post-pubescent woman regardless of her religion or nationality must cover her hair and bodily contours in public. Offenders face punishment and fine.But this has not stopped urban women from appearing in the streets wearing tight coats and flimsy headscarves and layers of skilfully applied makeup.
Iran is prone to frequent quakes, many of which have been devastating.
The worst in recent times hit the southern city of Bam in December 2003, killing 31,000 people - about a quarter of the population - and destroying its ancient mud-built citadel.

'This young lady must be phenomenally beautiful,' wrote one. 'After all, even Sarkozy had to hang on to his jaw.'
US President Barack Obama and other G-8 leaders may have hammered out a deal on global warming in L'Aquila, Italy.

But it's Mr Obama's 'roving eye' that has garnered most of the attention. Add to that French President Nicolas Sarkozy's cheeky smile, and you have a, well, unusual situation.

The US leader was shown again close to the Brazilian beauty in a much more circumspect pose.
Some even wondered whether Mr Obama was spending too much with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, the man known for his love for beautiful women.

At first glance, the snapshot appears to show MrObama caught in a moment of less-than-lofty analysis, ABC News reported.
Misleading

But looking at the video from which the picture was taken, the moment might be quite innocent after all. This is one of those times when a picture can be misleading.
Mr Obama was on a higher step and stepping down, so he looked down to assure his footing as the girl was walking up the stairs.
News footage posted by several television outlets leaves little room for doubt, Toronto's The Star reported.
The videos clearly show Mr Obama turning to his right to help American junior delegate Emmanuella Louidsor, 17, who was behind him (in glasses and V-neck sweater), down a step on the dias.
So who is the girl who made many a president's head turn?

According to Brazilmag.com, she's Mayara Tavares, a 16-year-old beauty from Rio de Janeiro, who was on her way to meet Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

On Thursday, youngsters from emerging countries as well as those from the industrialised nations got together in L'Aquila at the same time that the leaders of the G-8 were holding their summit.
The group of youngsters, known as Junior8 (J-8), discussed, among other issues, poverty and global warming. A representative of each delegation had the opportunity to meet the leader of their own country for a picture.

However, Mr Obama's 'covetous gaze' at the girl's derriere has become an instant hit in cyberspace.

The J-8 site describes the girl: 'Mayara Tavares is 16 and lives in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

'She inherited from her grandmother and father a passion to take part in community action and social movements and has been an activist in her community fighting for children and adolescent rights.

'She has recently acted as a community researcher, interviewing other adolescents in the community about their lives and how it feels for them to be growing up in the shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro.'

The website said that through this work she became part of an initiative by Unicef for the improvement of poor communities in large urban centres.

Mayara's father, nevertheless, was overjoyed by the sudden attention to his daughter, The New York Post reported.

MrEduardo Tavares told a Brazilian newspaper that she 'is so pretty, I am in a state of grace'.

Her father said Mayara had called him to say Mr Silva gave her 'a hug and introduced her to President Obama'.

However, Mr Tavares took pains to stress that she is not just attractive: 'She is not only pretty. She's articulate, confident and very engaged in her work.'


One thing is for sure: By the time she gets home to Rio, she'll need no introduction.
