Three people died and 34 have been left ill in northwestern China from food poisoning believed linked to tainted milk, the government said, in what is the country's latest food safety scare.
A preliminary investigation showed victims in the city of Pingliang suffered nitrite poisoning after drinking milk, a local government statement said.
Nitrite is a chemical used to make dyes and to preserve meats.
Two suspect dairy farms have been shut down and are being investigated, said the statement issued on Thursday. Pingliang is in Gansu province.
According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, nitrite poisoning can result in nausea, dizziness, respiratory distress, loss of consciousness and seizures.
Such safety incidents are routine for China's notoriously scandal-prone food industries, with the dairy sector a particular area of concern.
The dairy industry was rocked in 2008 when at least six babies died and another 300,000 became ill from milk tainted with the industrial chemical melamine.
Melamine had been added to give the appearance of higher protein levels.
Authorities said at the time that all suspect milk powder had been confiscated or destroyed and promised to clean up the industry, but melamine-tainted products have continued to reach the market.
In July last year, authorities announced they had found 25,000 tonnes of tainted milk powder earlier in 2009.

Last month, the country's largest meat processor was forced to apologise when clenbuterol was found in some of its pork products. The illegal additive can lead to dizziness, heart palpitations and profuse sweating.

Other recent scandals have involved contaminated red wine, bleached mushrooms, fake tofu and recycled cooking oil.

An Indonesian toy salesman has admitted to raping at least 96 boys, police said Thursday.
The 34-year-old man was arrested last week in the capital Jakarta after a complaint was filed by the parents of one of the alleged victims, said investigator Reynold Hutagalung.
The teenage boy said he was abducted by the salesman and held for 45 days, during which time he was repeatedly raped and forced to perform sexual acts on other men.

The toy salesman admitted to raping at least 96 boys between the ages of 13 and 17 over the last two years, many of them street children picked up at train stations, Hutagalung said.
"He kept a list and details about each of his victims," he said, "including the names of 16 of them."
Hutagalung says the accused, a father of four, said he was himself abused as a child.
He could face 15 years behind bars if found guilty.

The marriage between a 14-year-old Malaysian schoolgirl and a 23-year-old teacher has sparked a fierce debate in the country.
Underage marriages, although allowed for Muslims with permission from the Syariah courts and parental consent, are not common in Malaysia.
A local newspaper had reported on Sunday that Siti Maryam Mahmod married Abdul Manan Othman, a family friend, in July.
They were among the 250 couples who celebrated their union at a mosque in Kuala Lumpur in an event organised by the Kuala Lumpur Islamic department on Saturday
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom who was the guest of honour at the event, was quoted as saying that the 14-year old girl was allowed to be married as long as the Syariah court gave its consent.
The Syariah Family Law states that any Muslim under the age of 16 needed the consent of the Syariah court in order to marry.
However, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the Government did not condone child marriages and that the circumstances leading to the marriage would be looked into.
"Our stance is - we are not for child marriages. I want to be very clear here. As far as the Government is concerned, a wedding does not make a marriage," she said at the Barisan Nasional Convention.
Shahrizat said the ministry held a policy that children below 16 years were still in need of guidance, protection and the chance to form their own character.
"A marriage is about responsibility. She is still a child. We hope the court awarding or giving consent will be doubly cautious about this," Shahrizat said.
Shahrizat said the concern was not merely about the moral issue of the marriage but was also linked to the rights of the child and the responsibility that came with marriage.
"It’s more complicated than it is," she said, declining to speculate on the reasons behind the wedding.
"I don’t know. We have to examine the case. As far as I know she’s got the consent of the court. But I implore the courts to be cautious," she said
Meanwhile,  Ivy Josiah, executive director of local group Women's Aid Organization, urged the government to repeal laws that allowed underage marriage for Muslims.
"Cultural and religious sensitivities should not be excuses for what is clearly a human rights violation," she was quoted by AP as saying.

Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam made headlines in August when he encouraged teen marriages as a way to prevent young girls from having sex out of wedlock and getting pregnant.

A 20-year-old student has been named the new police chief of a violence-torn town in Mexico.
Marisol Valles, who major in criminology, appeared to be the only one to accept the position.
She becomes the director of municipal public security of Guadalupe in northern Mexico since Oct 18.
"Since she was the only person to accept the position," the mayor's office told AFP.
The ongoing turf battles between rival drug gangs have claimed some 6,500 lives in Juarez alone over the past three years.
Chihuahua, the Mexican state in which Guadalupe is located, has suffered from the drug cartel-related violence.
The mayor of Guadalupe was murdered in June.
Police officers and security agents have been killed, with some of them being beheaded.
There were at least eight murders last week alone in Guadalupe.
More than 28,000 people have died throughout Mexico in suspected drug violence since the Mexican government launched an all-out war against drug cartels in 2006.

An Indonesian legislator wants girls in his province to pass virginity tests before being admitted into state-funded high schools - a widely ridiculed proposal with little chance of passing.
Bambang Bayu Suseno, a lawmaker in Jambi's provincial parliament, cited concerns about a rise in premarital sex among teens in pushing for the proposal.
But critics argued Wednesday that mandatory testing would be discriminatory and a violation of human rights.
"The way to address this problem is through sex education," said Seto Mulyadi, who heads the National Commission for Child Protection, adding that not all girls engaging in sex do so willingly.
"Make it part of the school curriculum so students will learn how to protect themselves - but virginity tests?"
Indonesia is a secular nation with more Muslims than any other in the world - some 210 million.

Most practice a moderate, tolerant form of the faith, but some conservatives are worried rapid modernization is eroding morals.
Suseno said easy access to pornography and a poor understanding of religion have produced youths who are promiscuous.
In order to pass, the proposal would need the support of the Jambi governor, who, along with the minister of women's affairs, was quick to condemn it.

A 90-year-old Australian was arrested and charged with raping four young sisters whom he allegedly lured to his home in Thailand with imported chocolates and English lessons, police said Wednesday.
One girl was 5 when the alleged abuse began. The sisters are now 7 to 15.

Karl Joseph Kraus was arrested Tuesday at his home near the northern city of Chiang Mai, where police confiscated about 100 photographs of naked children, said Doi Saket police chief Kritapol Yeesakorn.
Some photos showed the elderly man posing naked with other children, and police are trying to identify them and contact their families, Kritapol said. He said police were investigating if Kraus was part of a pedophilia network, noting many of the pictures were emailed overseas.

Kraus, who has lived in Thailand more than a decade, approached the girls' family in 2008 with an offer to teach the sisters' English, said Kritapol.
"He would lure them into his house with sweets, usually chocolate from aboard or luxury sweets, and he would ask them to perform sexual acts with him," Kritapol said. "For the eldest of the four sisters, he recently gave her 4,000 baht instead of sweets." The sum is about US$120.
The parents recently noticed the girls had lost interest in playing outside and asked them what was wrong, and then took them to police who immediately sought an arrest warrant, the police chief said.

He was charged with rape and sexual abuse.
Kraus' Australian passport says he was born in Berlin.

Kritapol said Kraus does not have a lawyer yet and has refused to talk to police until he has one.
Neighbors described Kraus as an active 90-year-old who still drove his own car, police said.

But when police arrested him he acted weak, walked with a cane and complained of diabetes and high blood pressure.

A farmer in northern Egypt says his cow has given birth to a two-headed calf that he calls a "divine miracle."Sobhy el-Ganzoury said Saturday it took two hours and much pulling to deliver the rare calf. He said the difficult birth has weakened the calf's legs.
El-Ganzoury said the veterinarian informed him that the calf, which was born this week, is now in stable condition and is expected to survive.

He said he intends to keep the animal as a reminder that "God is able to do anything."
The calf still can't stand up because of its heavy heads and weak legs, and is being fed her mother's milk with a baby bottle.

A 16-year-old Australian who spent seven months at sea in her pink yacht sailed across the finish line of her round-the-world journey on Saturday, becoming the youngest sailor to circle the globe solo, nonstop and unassisted.

Thousands of spectators erupted into cheers as Jessica Watson sailed into Sydney Harbour, the finale to an epic adventure in which she battled 40foot (12-metre) waves, homesickness and critics who said she'd never make it home alive.

"She said she'd sail around the world, and she has," a tearful Julie Watson said as she watched her grinning daughter cruise past the finish line from a nearby boat. `She's home.' Watson docked at Sydney's iconic Opera House. The teenager burst into tears and gasped in relief as she stepped off the yacht and into the arms of her parents, whose decision to let their daughter attempt the feat was called an act of insanity by critics.

She hung onto her father and brother as she walked slowly and tentatively along a pink carpet rolled out in her honour -her first steps on land in 210 days. Fans screamed and waved as she walked by, many wearing pink clothes and holding pink flags in a nod to her 34foot (10-metre) yacht, Ella's Pink Lady.

"People don't think you're capable of these things -they don't realise what young people, what 16-year-olds and girls are capable of," Watson told the raucous crowd. "It's amazing when you take away those expectations what you can do."

Watson, from Buderim, north of Brisbane in Queensland state, sailed out of Sydney on October 18 despite protests by critics that she was too immature and inexperienced for the treacherous journey. Her parents maintained that she was well-prepared and noted she has been sailing since the age of 8.

"I don't think any of us would ever doubt Jessica Watson again," said New South Wales state Premier Kristina Keneally, who greeted Watson at the Opera House.

Watson's journey took her northeast through the South Pacific and across the equator, south to Cape Horn at the tip of South America, across the Atlantic Ocean to South Africa, through the Indian Ocean and around southern Australia.

Australian Jesse Martin holds the current record for the youngest person to sail around the world solo, nonstop and unassisted, after he completed the journey in 1999 at the age of 18.

Martin boarded Watson's boat to take over during her cruise toward the Opera House, so she could relax and wave to fans. Watson was given a goodie bag that included a can of whipped cream, which she partially injected into her mouth before laughing and turning away from the cameras.

She was also joined on board by Britain’s MikeP erham, who completed a solo circumnavigation at the age of 17 in 2009, though technical problems forced him to stop for assistance.

Watson’s feat, however,w ill not be considered an official world record, because the World Speed Sailing Record Council discontinued its ‘youngest’ category.

And though she sailed nearly 23,000 nautical miles, some sailing enthusiasts have also argued that Watson didn’t travel far enough north of the equator for her journey to count as a true round

the-world sail as defined by the record council's rules. Watson's managers have dismissed those claims and argued she doesn't need to adhere to the council's rules anyway, since they won't be recognising her voyage.

The route took Watson through some of the world's most treacherous waters, and the teen battled through monstrous storms, suffering seven knockdowns.

Watson said she had moments of doubt during those times, but generally kept her spirits up.
"Amazingly, I just enjoyed it much, much more than I ever thought I would and handled the challenges better than I thought," she told journalists. A woman in South Korea who tried to pass the written exam for a driver's license with near-daily attempts since April 2005 has finally succeeded on her 950th time.
The aspiring driver spent more than 5 million won (US$4,200) in application fees, but until now had failed to score the minimum 60 out of a possible 100 points needed to get behind the wheel for a driving test.
Cha Sa-soon, 68, finally passed the written exam with a score of 60 on Wednesday, said Choi Young-chul, a police official at the drivers' licence agency in Jeonju, 210 km south of Seoul.Police said Cha took the test hundreds of times over the past four years, but had no specific total. Local media said she took the test 950 times.
Now she must pass a driving test before getting her licence, Choi said.
Repeated calls to Cha seeking comment went unanswered. She told the Korea Times newspaper she needed the licence for her vegetable-selling business.

A Chinese man who spent 11 years in jail after being tortured into confessing to the murder of a man who wasn't even dead has been given US$96,000 (RM307,391) in government compensation, state media reported on Thursday.

Zhao Zuohai, 57, received the money on Thursday morning from judicial officials in Shangqiu City in central Henan province, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Zhao was recently released from prison after the man he was convicted of killing more than a decade ago reappeared in their home village last month.
After his release, Zhao said he had been forced to confess to murder because police had beaten him up during interrogations and made him stay awake for days.
"It was better to be dead than alive," he told Beijing News.The incident has raised concerns about torture, which is believed to be widely used by Chinese police in criminal cases.In 1999, Zhao Zuohai was arrested after another man, Zhao Zhenshang, now 58, disappeared after the two had an argument, according to earlier reports.The two men are not related. He was convicted of murder after a headless body believed to be Zhao Zhenshang was found, state media reported.

Police and court officials are investigating the case and have promised to penalise those responsible for the wrong conviction.
Two police officers have been detained on suspicion of torturing Zhao to get him to confess and a third one is at large, Xinhua said.After he went to prison, Zhao's wife remarried and two of his children were adopted by her new husband. The other two children left home to work as migrant labourers.
China has taken gradual steps to address particular instances of torture.
Last year, Beijing pledged to clamp down on inmate abuse, and nearly 1,800 policemen were suspended, according to a report released on the Ministry of Public Security website.China has also released guidelines that identify specific acts of torture for which police can be prosecuted in an apparent attempt to reign in such abuses. --
