A woman flinches as she is about to be repeatedly caned for having an extramarital affair.
Irdayanti Mukhtar, 34, received nine lashes by Sharia Police for having a relationship with another man, even though she is said to be in the process of divorcing her husband.
The harsh punishment was meted out in front of a crowd of 200 people outside the Al Munawwarah Mosque in Jantho, Indonesia.
The jeering crowd recorded the brutal beating on their mobile phones and camcorders and shouted for more beatings in the strict Muslim city.
Mukhtar had been sentenced to the punishment the previous day by a Sharia court where prosecutors said that she was guilty of being in 'close proximity' to another man.
Under Sharia law the offence carries a maximum beating of nine strokes with a cane or a minimum of three.
Neighbours had seen Mukhtar with the man and had barged in on her while the couple were in her bedroom, although it is unclear what they were actually doing.
The mob then dragged them to the local police station to be charged.
It is believed Sharia Police are also investigating a claim that Mukhtar was molested by the crowd before they took her to be charged.
Shortly after the caning on Friday Mukhtar passed out and had to be taken to hospital for treatment.
She was one of four people, including the man she was caught with, to be caned for extramarital affairs.

When people think of Egypt’s representative animal, they usually think of cats. But they may change their minds, as about 8 million dogs were found in an underground tunnel in northern part of the country.
The Daily Mail reported that scientists from Cardiff University investigated the underground network of Saqqara desert and found the stunning remains.
The structure was composed of one central pathway along with other many smaller roads stretching out. Pilgrims bought puppies from farms, and made them into mummies.
Some of the dogs found were made into mummies only a few hours after birth. It is assumed that the mummies were made and treated as a symbol of Anubis, one of the gods of the dead.
Anubis, from Egyptian myth, has the head of jackal and the body of human.

“These animals were not strictly ‘sacrificial.’ Rather, the dedication of an animal mummy was regarded as a pious act, with the animal acting as an intermediary between the donor and the gods,” said Dr. Paul Nicholson from the university’s School of History Archaeology and Religion.
It is assumed that the practice was stopped after the Roman conquest of Egypt in 30 B.C.

She revealed the plan at a symposium on Monday where Miao Meixian, the former principal of Guangdong Female Technical Secondary School, criticised the phenomenon that has seen many female college students and graduates become mistresses or marry sugar daddies and become full-time housewives.
Miao said the young women were settling for such a life in part because of deficiencies and failures in the education of girls.

A Singapore recruit who sparked internet debate after he got his maid to carry his backpack has stepped forward and admitted his mistake to his superior.
In a letter to The Straits Times Forum Page, the Ministry of Defence said the Singapore Armed Forces has completed its investigation into the case.
'The serviceman concerned has identified himself to his commander,' said Colonel Desmond Tan, director of Mindef's Public Affairs Department.
Col Tan said he was a recruit undergoing the Physical Training Preparatory phase prior to Basic Military Training (BMT).
'The recruit is remorseful for his actions and realises that it was wrong for him to have allowed this,' he said.
'He has been counselled and continues his training. The SAF has reminded all servicemen to be mindful of their conduct in public.'
A photograph of the full-time national serviceman (NSF) and his maid, which was taken from a Facebook account, surfaced on The Straits Times online portal Stomp on March 27 and became viral.
It showed just their backs and appeared to have been taken in the Tanah Merah vicinity.
The image spawned emotions ranging from outrage to amusement to angst about the state of Singapore's youth.
It also led to a frenzy of forum postings, tweets and articles. Spoofs also made the rounds, with one showing a platoon of maids carrying field packs marching on a parade square.

Football fanatics brought the body of a murdered teenager into a stadium in Colombia's Norte de Santander department.
The body of 17-year-old Christopher Jacome was brought in a coffin to the General Santander Stadium in Cucuta, the capital of Norte de Santander, during the Sunday match between Cucuta Deportivo and Envigado.
The boy, a loyal fan of Cucuta who belonged to the fan group "Barra del Indio" - a group known in Colombia for their aggressive antics at football matches - was shot several times Saturday while playing soccer in a local park.
After his wake, friends from "Barra del Indio" took the cadaver from the funeral home and paraded it around and then into the stadium in an attempt to pay homage to the slain football fan.
The medic for the football club, Julio Rivera, told the press, "They don't let in the "barras" (fanatics) but yes, a cadaver. This is the only part of the world where this has happened."
Colonel Alvaro Pico, a local police said that the boy's death had nothing to do with his love for the soccer team rather it was a consequence of criminal actions in the area where he lived.
The event has generated controversy in Cucuta and stadium officials will hold a meeting to find out who permitted the entry of the cadaver and what punishment will be given.
Colonel Pico said they have identified some individuals who took the body from the funeral home.

Police in southern Germany warned this week of a dangerous new form of alcohol abuse among teens – using tampons soaked in vodka to get drunk quickly and hide the smell. The practice poses grave health risks, they said.

Police in the Baden-Württemburg city of Tuttlingen responded Tuesday to growing online chatter among teenagers that they could become intoxicated using the vodka tampons without having alcohol on their breath.
This is not true, police said, denying that it was an effective way to get drunk. They also warned girls that the alcohol could damage vaginal walls and increase the risk of infection. Boys have reportedly also been using tampons anally.
“I believe this is very dangerous,” head of a children’s clinic in Singen told southern German paper Südkurier last week. “For us this is a new thing.”

In early March a 14-year-old girl collapsed during a street festival in Konstanz, apparently highly intoxicated from using a vodka tampon, the paper reported.
Youth researchers have since found out that this form of alcohol abuse is trendy in the region.
But teens who believe they can hide the smell of alcohol consumption are wrong, experts told the paper.
The development shows a new dimension for alcohol abuse among teens, county social worker Axel Goßner told the Südkurier.
“Alcohol is no longer a stimulant, but a means to an end,” he said.
The trend arose among teens in the United States, where it is known as “slimming.” But it has reportedly caught on in Scandinavia and other places where alcohol is difficult for young people to acquire.

Some Facebook groups are even devoted to exchanging tips on the topic, complete with how-to videos and instructions.

This is no April Fool’s joke - a woman in the United Kingdom actually eats sofas.
The mother-of-five has an addiction to eating non-food items such as elastic bands, rubbers and other objects she finds lying around her home.
The Sun reports that Adele Edwards, 30, has eaten eight sofas and five chairs in her lifetime.
As funny as it may sound, it is a deadly habit.
Doctors say she is suffering from an eating disorder called Pica — from the Latin word for magpie — where sufferers are compelled to consume non-food items.
She already has had an emergency treatment to remove chunks of foam from her intestines.
Doctors say the habit will eventually poison her.
Adele's boyfriend Chasney, 26, has also begged her to stop the deadly habit.
Adele, from Florida, said: "I was ten years old when I was first introduced to cushion.
"At first, I thought it was strange but, after sucking it for a while, I came to like the texture.
"I started chewing cushion regularly and would swallow whole chunks as though it was candy floss. It sounds strange but, to me, foam tasted like sweets."
But after nearly 20 years of suffering from the addiction Adele is now fearful the disorder will leave her children motherless.
She said on US TV show My Strange Addiction: "I'm scared. I've never eaten cushion in front of my kids, I don't want them to copy me.
"They don't know what I'm doing to my body but I'm terrified that one day, they'll have to tell people: 'Mummy died from eating too many sofas'."
