It's Paul the octopus - who, incredibly, has correctly predicted the outcome of all six of Germany's World Cup matches. 

As if the pressure wasn't already more than any mollusc should ever have to bear, he has also been issued with a challenge from an unexpected quarter - Mani, Singapore's psychic parakeet.

Mani - who has, according to his owner, predicted the last five games of the tournament correctly - has thrown the gauntlet down to Paul by predicting that Holland will triumph on Sunday instead.
Germans will be torn in two at the news. Half will be still be wanting to roast Paul with garlic after he predicted - correctly - that their team would lose to Spain at the semi-final.

While the other half will be hoping that Paul - who is, after all, a German octopus - will triumph against Mani, giving them some share in the glory of the World Cup final.
ိToday, during a live television broadcast, Paul predicted Germany would beat Uruguay in the third place playoff match on Saturday - his seventh prediction of the tournament.
And now he has made his eighth - and possibly the most important - prediction: that Spain will win the final. His latest success came on Wednesday night, when he forecast Spain would defeat the Germans in the semi-final.
Paul was born in Weymouth in 2006 but now resides in Germany's Oberhausen's Sea Life Aquarium.
He predicts matches by choosing to eat a mussel from boxes emblazoned with the flags of the German team and its rivals.
In the group stages, he correctly predicted German victories over Australia and Ghana and the country's loss to Serbia.

England and Argentina then produced spineless performances in the next two rounds to ensure that Paul's predictions that Germany would win came to pass. Then came Germany's defeat to Spain.
Paul first started predicting matches during the 2008 European Championships, when four out of his six choices were correct.
Mathematicians have found the probability of guessing the correct result six times consecutively is less than 0.5 per cent, or 216 to 1.
Paul's soothsaying has turned him into a star in Germany. But he may well prove to be the victim of his own success.

After Argentina lost to Germany in the quarterfinal, the Argentines threatened to capture, kill him and serve him with potatoes.
Even some Germans have turned against their eight-legged oracle, suggesting Oberhausen restaurants should soon offer grilled octopus on their menus.
So how does Paul do it? According to experts, it could all be down to the shape of the competitors' flags.
'Experiments have shown that the Octopus vulgaris can distinguish brightness, size, shape, and horizontal or vertical orientation of objects.
'They are more drawn to horizontal shapes,' said Shelagh Malham, a lecturer in the School of Ocean Sciences at Bangor University.
But can they see colour? Not according to Janet Voight, associate curator of invertebrates at The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

'No, there's no evidence that octopus have colour vision. The colour red disappears ten feet under water anyway.'
So Paul can't see in colour but is drawn to bold horizontal shapes.
These are just the shapes that appear on the flags of Germany, Spain and Serbia.
But how did he pick between these flags? The German flag is quite bold but the Spanish flag has a broader yellow horizontal stripe, explaining Paul's attraction to Spain. Similarly, the Serbian flag is brighter and more vivid than the German flag.
Although octopuses cannot see specific colours, they can determine differences in hue and brightness. These are probably the factors that led to Paul choosing the teams he did.
But he'll need to cash in on his success soon. At the age of four Paul is unusually old for an octopus, which, in the wild, don't usually live much past two years.

A 90-year-old Australian was arrested and charged with raping four young sisters whom he allegedly lured to his home in Thailand with imported chocolates and English lessons, police said Wednesday.
One girl was 5 when the alleged abuse began. The sisters are now 7 to 15.

Karl Joseph Kraus was arrested Tuesday at his home near the northern city of Chiang Mai, where police confiscated about 100 photographs of naked children, said Doi Saket police chief Kritapol Yeesakorn.
Some photos showed the elderly man posing naked with other children, and police are trying to identify them and contact their families, Kritapol said. He said police were investigating if Kraus was part of a pedophilia network, noting many of the pictures were emailed overseas.

Kraus, who has lived in Thailand more than a decade, approached the girls' family in 2008 with an offer to teach the sisters' English, said Kritapol.
"He would lure them into his house with sweets, usually chocolate from aboard or luxury sweets, and he would ask them to perform sexual acts with him," Kritapol said. "For the eldest of the four sisters, he recently gave her 4,000 baht instead of sweets." The sum is about US$120.
The parents recently noticed the girls had lost interest in playing outside and asked them what was wrong, and then took them to police who immediately sought an arrest warrant, the police chief said.

He was charged with rape and sexual abuse.
Kraus' Australian passport says he was born in Berlin.

Kritapol said Kraus does not have a lawyer yet and has refused to talk to police until he has one.
Neighbors described Kraus as an active 90-year-old who still drove his own car, police said.

But when police arrested him he acted weak, walked with a cane and complained of diabetes and high blood pressure.

More than 1.14 per cent of the world's population are members of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which means that out of every 100 people, one is a member of the party.

On Monday, a senior official of the party announced that it has a record high of 77.99 million members as of last year.

The figure is 116 times higher than it was in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded, said Wang Qinfeng – deputy head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee.

Wang said last year alone, more than 20 million people applied to join the party but it only recruited two million, he said.

Of the total CPC members, about 18.5 million were under 35 years old and close to 28 million held a college degree or higher qualification, said Wang.

He said CPC members had taken the lead in helping China host the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics in 2008, the celebrations in conjunction with the 60th founding anniversary of the country, as well as in the relief work of the Sichuan and Yushu earthquakes.

According to Wikipedia, China has the largest population in the world with 1,338,350,000 people that make up 19.59% of the world's population, followed by India (1,182,540,000), United States (309,612,000) and Indonesia (231,369,000), as of June 29, 2010.

A farmer in northern Egypt says his cow has given birth to a two-headed calf that he calls a "divine miracle."Sobhy el-Ganzoury said Saturday it took two hours and much pulling to deliver the rare calf. He said the difficult birth has weakened the calf's legs.
El-Ganzoury said the veterinarian informed him that the calf, which was born this week, is now in stable condition and is expected to survive.

He said he intends to keep the animal as a reminder that "God is able to do anything."
The calf still can't stand up because of its heavy heads and weak legs, and is being fed her mother's milk with a baby bottle.
