He defied fate and survived venomous snake bites innumerable times, but in what can only be described as a bizarre twist that fate had in store for him, K Raj Kumar, one of India's best known ophiologist, fell victim to mosquito bites. President of the Hyderabad-based `Friends of Snakes Society,' Raj Kumar died of complications caused by cerebral malaria at a hospital here on Monday. The killer infection is caused by mosquitoes bites which transfer the deadly virus. Popularly known as the "snake man of Hyderabad," Raj Kumar'sadventures with the slithery but largely misunderstood creatures was featured in Paul Merton's popular television serial on India. An endearing person who was always accessible to people when they placed SOS calls to him, Raj Kumar was a celebrity in his own right in the city, and elsewhere. Raj Kumar's first encounter with a snake was when he, as a child, saw a group of people brutally killing a harmless, non-venomous snake that had strayed into their residence. Unable to see reason as to why people killed snakes, Raj Kumar sought answers to his doubts from his mother Joan Kanuri who explained to him why people resorted to killing snakes, which were "beautiful but misunderstood creations of God." Her words left a lasting impression on the child's mind and when she gifted him a Green Vine Snake, it was the beginning of a long journey of friendship and love for snakes. Raj Kumar, who was always ready to hold demonstrations for anyone interested in knowing about snakes, survived at least 29 bites including that of a cobra and a viper. "Things turned serious twice and his fingers were amputated," says A Shankaran, deputy conservator of forests and a long-time friend of Raj Kumar. "Once he was admitted in intensive care unit where 23 doses of anti-venom were given to save his life. He escaped all these but cerebral malaria killed him," he said. Shankaran goes on to add: "He knew the art of capturing snakes and handled them gently as we handle newborns. As a school boy, he used to rescue snakes and hand over them to the zoo. He wanted to protect them from people. He dedicated all his life for snakes and never took money for his shows." "He was di agnosed of the dis ease and treatment began two days ago but he died on Monday morning," said his brother, Mr K. Prakash, an engineer. "He was such a loveable man." Raj Kumar used to attend at least 30 calls a month to rescue snakes in the twin cities. He had also conducted hundreds of shows in schools and institutions across the country. He was particularly fond of the King Cobra. He had at least 200 disciples, who adored him. "We can't digest the news. Sri Lankan ministers on Thursday denied that the president now enjoyed dictatorial powers under a post-war constitutional revamp, but observers worried about the chilling effect on democracy.

The national parliament voted in favour of the 18th amendment to the 1978 constitution on Wednesday, scrapping a two-term limit on the presidency and handing sweeping new powers to President Mahinda Rajapakse.

The law grants the head of state the ability to appoint officials to key posts in previously quasi-independent institutions such as the judiciary, police and election commission.

“The constitution was used to consolidate power, without rebuilding governance structures,” said Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, executive director of the local thinktank the Centre for Policy Alternatives.

“It’s a setback for democracy. Parliament is now a rubber-stamp institution, It’s a dark period for us,” he added.

The reforms were debated on Wednesday and passed with 161 in favour and 17 against in the 225-member parliament. The main opposition United National Party (UNP) boycotted the debate, saying it did not want to be “contaminated.” Government ministers argued that the changes were needed to ensure stability in the country after the end of its 37-year ethnic conflict in May last year.— AFP

The three American veterans from three different wars had only one good leg among them. But that didn't stop them from summiting Africa's highest mountain.

The three soldiers -veterans of Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam -scrambled, clawed and plodded to the top of Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro, hiking up the domed mountain's scree-filled paths on one human leg and five prosthetics made of titanium and carbon fiber.

They skidded. They fell. They removed their legs to adjust their shoes.

And after six days of climbing they stood at 19,340 feet (5,895 metres) -Africa's highest point.
"The message we're trying to send back to the USA is no matter what disability you have you can be active," said Kirk Bauer, the executive director of Disabled Sports USA and a 62-year-old Vietnam veteran who lost his leg in 1969. Bauer, of Ellicott City, Maryland, was one of the triumphant climbers.

"If three amputees from three different wars and two different generations with literally one good leg can climb Kilimanjaro, our other disabled friends can get out and go hiking or go biking or swim a mile, can get out and lead a healthy life," he said.

The youngest of the veterans, 26-year-old Neil Duncan, lost both legs to a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in 2005. The Denver, Colorado, resident tried to summit Kilimanjaro last year, but poor planning and a fast ascent schedule doomed the trip.

This time a different guide planned a route specifically for the veterans. The group took six days to ascend, instead of three or four, and a special permit for the disabled allowed them to spend the night in tents at 5,800 meters. Last Sat urday morning they made it to the top. "It was evidence that with the right planning and right preparation and right execution anything can be done," Duncan said. "That was why I was so set on coming back. I knew it was at tainable. It was proof that you can bounce back from a failure in anything.

You can regroup, recuperate, replan and use your previous experience and be successful."


The third veteran, Dan Nevins, a 37-year-old from Florida, who lost his legs in Iraq, developed a pressure boil on one of his leg’s stumps, which may have lead to his developing of a high fever, coughing and congestion. After reaching the summit and descending to 15,000 feet, Nevins was evacuated down on a wheeled stretcher.
That illustrated just one of the challenges the amputees faced. On Day 5, the group hiked from 15,500 feet to 19,000 feet, a 12-hour day in thin air that left everyone struggling to breathe.

Kilimanjaro’s lower paths are flat dirt, but higher trails turn to a rock and scree blend difficult for prosthetics.

In the loose rock the artificial legs slid backward, leading Duncan to feel like he was climbing the mountain twice.

“It’s an incredible amount of work as you can imagine but one of the most difficult portions of the whole deal was the assent from 15,500 to 19,000,” said Duncan, a student at the University of Denver. The rocks were “real loose, real steep. With having no feet or ankles I was lacking the ability to grip into that dirt.” Going down — the part many climbers say is the hardest on the body — was no easier for the amputees. Duncan lost his footing and somersaulted. Bauer’s artificial leg fell off. “I have only one real knee, and it takes an incredible amount of stress from falling,” Duncan said.

Russia’s oft-ridiculed parliament was hit by a new scandal on Wednesday after deputies were caught on video running from seat to seat pressing voting buttons for fellow MPs who did not bother to turn up.

The episode is the latest embarrassment for the Russian lower house of parliament, the State Duma, which often just performs the role of a rubberstamp and rarely blocks initiatives from the Kremlin.

When a new law on drink-driving was debated in the lower house of the Russian parliament, the State Duma, it was passed on its first reading by more than 440 deputies, even though only 88 members were present.

The reason was simple. Deputies ran from empty seat to empty seat, pressing the electronic voting buttons for a majority of colleagues who were absent.

The bill that they were voting on was proposed by President Dmitry Medvedev
The voting antics, which took place May 19, were first revealed in a news item filmed by Russian television channel Ren TV, which has been viewed more than 180,000 times on YouTube.
"One physically strong deputy has time to press nine buttons during the voting," Ren TV reported.

Deputies have around 20 seconds to vote, allowing the machinations, Russia’s Komsomolskaya Pravda reported on Wednesday.

“Of course, we suspected that our people’s deputies do not sit around in the State Duma all day long, but come on, 88 out of 450 is too much,” Komsomolskaya Pravda wrote.
Deputy speaker at the Duma, Oleg Morozov, is shown joking as the voting result comes up on the screen: 449 out of 450 deputies have passed the bill.

“Someone must have stepped out,” he quipped.

Ruling party United Russia reacted furiously to the video, with top party official Sergei Neverov threatening that deputies who skip sessions risked losing the party’s nomination.

"We need to clamp down on the disgrace that often happens in the house when a number of the deputies are absent," Neverov said, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported.

"The Duma needs to get rid of the truant deputies."
Its deputies include popular singers and former sports figures, including Olympic gymnast Alina Kabayeva.

In a sign of its nominal role, speaker Boris Gryzlov of the United Russia Party, famously said in 2003 that the Duma was "not the place for political battles."
In April, Medvedev criticised deputies for their poor attendance record.
"I am amazed myself by the picture in the parliament when only 10 to 15 per cent of the members are present,” Medvedev said. “Let them go to the sessions, and as for those who don’t go, let’s change the legislation, and let them go somewhere else,” he said.

“Unfortunately in Russia’s State Duma, this practice is common. In the Duma's fifth term, it has been used and is being used all the time" said Alexei Mukhin, director of the Centre for Political Information.

"The leadership of the State Duma is very concerned about the absence of deputies and this creates the illusion that the deputies are present and are voting."
Under Duma rules, absent deputies can pass their voting rights on to colleagues, but the uncontrolled buttonpressing is "of course a breach of procedure," Mukhin said.
So far the news has been reported more as an amusing novelty item than a serious breach of rules in the Duma, which is dominated by United Russia deputies.
Critics said the abysmal turnout technically made the vote illegal since the rules of parliament itself stipulated that a majority of MPs needed to be present for its activities to be legitimate.

But the recent wedding of one of the Muslim leaders who brought Shariah law to Africa’s most populous nation is under scrutiny as human rights groups sayhe married a 13-year-old Egyptian girl.

As authorities investigate Senator AhmadSaniYerima,the marriage is drawing fresh questions about the role of religion in a country of 150 million people split between Christians and Muslims.

Yerima, 49, arranged the marriage with the girl after paying her family a $100,000 dowry, according to a complaint filed by the Nigerian Human Rights Commission in April. Initially, Yerima couldn’t arrange a visa for the girl to travel from Egypt to Nigeria, so he instead brought the girl through neighbouring Niger, said Chidi Odinkalu, a lawyer for works for the open Society Justice Initiative.

That leaves Yerima open to human trafficking charges, as well as possible child-sex and endangerment charges, the lawyer said.

“You don’t need the holy Quran or the Bible to get this,” Odinkalu said.

“I think most people, irrespective of the cleavage between the two faiths, wouldn’t marry off their 13 year old.” Yet 30 members of the girl’s family attended the ceremony at the National Mosque, the human rights commission said. It’s unclear who else attended the wedding.Ustaz Musa Mohammed, the chief imam of the National Mosque, could not be reached for comment.

Under child protection laws enforceable in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, a woman must be 18 before being able to consent to marriage. However, those laws aren’t enacted in all of Nigeria’s 36 states and activists say child brides have been married off in Muslim communities after their first period.

It also isn’t the first time Yerima has apparently married a child bride. The right commission alleged that he married a 15-year-old girl, only to divorce her at 17 as she nurses his child.

“The senator is in the habit of marrying minors and has gained notoriety in enticing girls to marry him,” the commission said.
Yerima himself appears unrepentant in recent interviews, though he has declined to say how old his new wife is.
“As a Muslim, as I always say, I consider God’s law and that of his prophet above any other law,” Yerima said. —AP

-A team of military doctors backed by India's national defence research centre is studying an 83-yearold man who claims to have survived seven decades without food or water.

The yogi, Prahlad Jani, has been sealed in a hospital in the western city of Ahmedabad where he is under 24-hour observation by 30 doctors and will be subjected to a series of medical tests.

He has now spent six days without food or water under strict observation and doctors say his body has not yet shown any adverse effects from hunger or dehydration.
Mr Jani, who claims to have left home aged seven and lived as a wandering sadhu or holy man in Rajasthan, is regarded as a 'breatharian' who can live on a 'spiritual life-force' alone. He believes he is sustained by a goddess who pours an 'elixir' through a hole in his palate. His claims have been supported by an Indian doctor who specializes in studies of people who claim supernatural abilities, but he has also been dismissed by others as a "village fraud."

"The observation from this study may throw light on human survival without food and water," doctor G. Ilavazahagan, director of India's Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), said.

The DIPAS is part of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, India's state defence and military re search institute also behind a grenade packed with chilli powder that recently hit headlines.
"We will be able to help save human lives during natural disasters, high altitude, sea journeys and other natural and human extremities. We can educate people about the survival techniques in adverse conditions with little food and water or nothing at all."

"This may help in working out strategies for survival during natural calamities, extreme stressful conditions and extra-terrestrial ex plorations like future missions to the Moon and Mars by the human race," Ilavazahagan said.

The tests on Jani include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, mea suring brain and heart activity with electrodes and other neuro-physiologi cal studies, in addition to blood tests.
The experiment started on April 22 and will take 15-20 days. Since the beginning, Jani has neither eaten nor drunk and has not been to the toilet, Ilavazahagan said.
"The exercise of taking this yogi under the medical scanner is to un derstand what energy supports his ex istence," he added, explaining that sol diers could benefit from his apparent ability to survive.

"Jani says he meditates to get energy.

Officials in a county in cen tral China have been told to smoke nearly a quarter million packs of locally made cigarettes annually or risk being fined, state media reported on Monday.


The Gong'an county government in Hubei province has ordered its staff to puff their way through 230,000 packs of Hubei-produced cigarette brands a year, the Global Times said.


Departments that fail to meet their targets will be fined, according to the report.

"The regulation will boost the local economy via the cigarette tax," said Chen Nianzu, a member of the Gong'an cigarette market supervision team, according to the paper.


The measure could also be a ploy to aid local cigarette brands such as Huanghelou, which are under severe pressure from competitors in neighbouring Hunan province, according to the paper.

China has 350 million smokers, of whom a million die of smoking-related diseases every year. More than half of all male doctors in China smoke, but the government is now trying harder to get them to kick the habit in order to set an example for others, state media reported recently.

If you’re planning on get ting rid of an old computer, make sure you remove the hard drive first and smash it up with a hammer, a British consumer group advised on Thursday.

Whichfi Computing magazine said the only way to make sure fraudsters could not steal personal details from an old computer’s hard drive was to utterly destroy it, as simply deleting files or wiping the drive was not suficient.

Whichfi said it had bought eight second-hand drives from Internet auction site eBay and recovered 22,000 “deleted” files, including some information that could be confidential.

Criminals, who it said trawled coun cil waste sites and Internet sites like eBay, would be able use specialist software to retrieve the information which could then be used to commit identity theft.

“PCs contain more valuable personal information than ever as people increasingly shop online, use social networking sites and take digital photos,” said Sarah Kidner, Editor of Whichfi Computing.

“Even if you delete your files, you’d be surprised how easy it is to recover your personal data. It sounds extreme, but the only way to be 100 per cent safe is to smash your hard drive into smithereens.”.

President George W.Bush and his successor, Barack Obama, joined all the living US presidents on Wednesday for a historic meeting at the White House two weeks before the country’s next transfer of power.
Bush, a Republican, and Obama, a Democrat, met privately for about 30 minutes ahead of the wider gathering.

Then former Presidents Jimmy Carter 84  and Bill Clinton 62, both Democrats, and Republican George H.W.Bush 84,  the current president’s father, met
Bush  62 and Obama 47 in the Oval Office for a photo session with journalists. It was the first such gathering of former US heads of state at the White House in 27 years.
All of the living presidents were last at the White House in 1981: Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, who was president at the time. The ex-presidents were there before leaving as part of the American delegation to the funeral of Egypt's Anwar Sadat, who had been assassinated.

“I want to thank the presidentelect for joining the ex-presidents for lunch,” the younger Bush told Obama, who stood next to him, nodding.

“One message that I have and I think we all share is that we want you to succeed. Whether we’re Democrat or Republican, we care deeply about this country,” Bush said.

The five men, who have not always had rosy relations, smiled broadly and stood shoulder-to-shoulder in a line in front of the president’s desk, with Carter standing somewhat more to the side of the group.

The senior Bush stood next to Obama, with the current president next, followed by Clinton and Carter.

“All of us who have served in this office understand that the office itself transcends the individual and we wish you all the very best, and so does the country,” Bush said to his successor.

“To the extent we can, we look forward to sharing our experiences with you.” Obama called the meeting extraordinary and thanked the current president for hosting it.

“All the gentlemen here understand both the pressures and possibilities of this ofice, and for me to have the opportunity to get advice, good counsel and fellowship with these individuals is extraordinary,” he said.

When asked by a reporter what he learned from the other four men’s mistakes, Obama replied: “From their suc cesses!” Despite last year’s presidential campaign when Obama attacked Bush regularly over foreign and domestic policy, the transition process between the Nov. 4 election and Obama’s January 20 inauguration has proceeded smoothly. Though they have much in common, relations between the presidents have been strained at times.

Carter has criticised Bush’s presidency as “the worst in history” with regard to international relations. Clinton, who has a warm relationship with the senior Bush, sharply criticized the current president and Obama during his wife Hillary Clinton’s White House bid last year. After their meeting in the Oval Ofice, the five men had lunch in a chandeliered private dining room that lasted more than an hour. Aides to Obama and Bush released statements after the meeting, describing the topics discussed at lunch as wide-ranging without getting specific. Obama’s spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said the president-elect was eager to stay in touch with the former presidents in the coming years.

A US funeral business that specialises in launching cremated human remains into Earth's orbit has begun taking reservations for landing small capsules of ashes on the moon, announced the company's founder. "Celestis' first general public lunar mission could occur as early as 2010 and reservations are now being taken," said CharlesM.Chafer, Celestis founder and president, in an email to AFP.
"We can send up to 5000 individual capsules to thelunarsurface," he said.
The company hopes to install a cemetery on the lunar surface to hold cremated re mains of the dead, or a smaller symbolic portion of them, which one day could be visited by relatives of the deceased, said Chafer.
For transportation, Celestis has made deals with two other US private space companies, Odyssey Moon and Astrobotic Technology, which are currently working on making commercial flights to the moon. For sending a tiny, one gram portion of cremated remains to the moon, the company charges $9,995, according to Celestis' web site.
Other funeral services besides the full lunar trip include sending ash into Earth's orbit - the cheapest option, starting at $700 - and all the way up to launching remains far, far away into deep space, for which the company charges more than $37,000.
The latter option is expected to be available from 2011, after the development of a special capsule to hold the remains, the company said.
Ten years ago Nasa paid tribute to top US astrono mer Eugene Shoemaker by carrying into space a portion of his cremated remains.
After a year in lunar orbit Shoemak er's remains were intentionally planted on the moon's south pole, the first time human remains have been landed on the lunar surface - but maybe not the last time. -
