Armenia is to make chess a compulsory subject in primary schools in a bid to turn itself into a global force in the game, the education ministry have said.
"Teaching chess in schools will create a solid basis for the country to become a chess superpower," said an official at the ministry, Arman Aivazian.
The authorities led by President Serzh Sarkisian, an enthusiastic supporter of the game, have committed around $1.43 million to the scheme - a large sum in the impoverished but chess-mad country. Children from the age of six will learn chess as a separate subject on the curriculum for two hours a week.

Aivazian said the lessons, which start later this year, would "foster schoolchildren's intellectual development" and teach them to "think flexibly and wisely". The game is hugely popular in Armenia, where grandmasters are stars and important match results make headline news.

The Malaysian government have insisted that there was no evidence of fake eggs for sale in markets, but said it was awaiting official confirmation. State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said while fake eggs did exist, the state government was informed that a portion of the sample analysed by the state Veterinary Department's laboratory in Bukit Tengah found that the eggs were genuine.
Phee said the analysis results were personally relayed to him by the department director, Dr Wan Mohd Kamil Wan Nik, through a text message yesterday morning after tests on 389 samples obtained from operations in Pulau Tikus and Bayan Lepas recently. "We are still unable to officially announce as three egg samples have already been sent to the Chemistry Department in Petaling Jaya to be analysed, to determine if they are real. We will know the outcome soon."
Phee said his side, together with the Domestic Trade. Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry as well as the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry committees were making concerted efforts in monitoring to detect the sale of fake eggs. "All service centres have been instructed to monitor markets, grocery shops and supermarkets and they are to report immediately so as to ensure consumers do not fall prey. We believe these fake eggs exist as claimed by the Consumer Association of Penang (CAP) but monitoring and investigations have to be done to ensure the claims are valid," Phee said, adding that such instances had surfaced in Taiwan and China.
It was reported that the Health Ministry would take legal action against anyone responsible for the sale of fake eggs in the market. Idris has advised consumers in the country to be wary, as there are fake eggs being sold in the market after receiving a complaint by a buyer who is believed to have bought 30 eggs at the Pulau Tikus market. When asked whether the eggs were imported, Phee said the country had banned the entry of imported eggs since the spread of bird flu.

MALAYSIAN men have extramarital sex because of 'wives who neglect their responsibilities' to their husbands, a Malaysian lawmaker told Parliament on Thursday, outraging women's groups.

'Husbands driving home after work see things that are sexually arousing and go to their wives to ease their urges,' said independent lawmaker Ibrahim Ali, according to online portal Malaysiakini.

'But when they come home to their wives, they will say, 'wait, I'm cooking,' or 'wait, I'm getting ready to visit relatives',' Mr Ali said.

'In Islam, wives are supposed to stop everything to fulfill their husband's demands.' Mr Ali heads Perkasa, a right-wing Malay nationalist group seeking to protect ethnic Malay dominance in politics.

His strident comments came as he asked about plans by the government's religious development department to educate wives on their responsibilities.

Born without hands and lower arms, fifth-grader Nicholas Maxim received a unique award on Monday for his participation in Zaner-Bloser's 20th annual National Handwriting Contest.
"We submitted his entry because we felt his penmanship was amazing considering he completes most of his work without using his prostheses," said Cheryl Hasenfus, Readfield Elementary School principal. At those times, Nicholas writes by holding a pen or pencil between his upper arms.
On behalf of Zaner-Bloser, a publisher of educational materials, Hasenfus presented a trophy to Nicholas during a school assembly for his excellent penmanship. The school is in Readfield, Maine. Inspired by his ability, Zaner-Bloser decided to create a new award category in his honour: Nicholas Maxim Special Award for Excellent Penmanship
"When our team saw Nicholas' handwriting, we were just amazed," said Zaner-Bloser President Bob Page. "Since we started this contest 20 years ago, we've been pleased to get a great response that increases every year, and Nicholas inspired us to encourage all students to participate."

This little charmer calls these King Cobras her best friends - even though she has survived three venom-filled bites from them.
Villagers in Ghatampur, Uttar Pradesh, India, run in fear when they see eight-year-old Kajol Khan wandering the dusty streets with her deadly friends wrapped around her neck.
She said: 'I have a lot of fun with the cobras. It hurts when they bite me but sometimes it’s my own fault because I tease them. It’s quite funny.'
Kajol's father, Taj Mohammad, 55, has worked as Ghatampur's snake catcher for the past 45 years.
He has already passed on his skills to his son Gulab, 28. But now it seems Kajol, the youngest nine, is keen to join the family business.
'I don’t like school,' she said. 'I much prefer working with the snakes.'
Her bond with the creatures - which stems from crawling around them as a baby - now means they are her favourite companions.
Since her friendship with the killers began she has been bitten on her stomach, her cheeks and most recently her arm. She was seriously ill but made a full recovery.
'It hurts when they bite me but they don’t mean it,' she said. 'I get a little frightened when I see the blood but my father sorts me out. He rushes into the forest and comes back with the medicine.'
Kajol's father is now famous in his region and is nicknamed Bhura (the snake-catcher). But he earns a measly £14 a job for catching the snakes from houses and shops in the area.
'We help people in the area and catch the snakes that have slipped into their homes,' Taj said.
'My father is a snake catcher, his father was a snake catcher. It’s our family business and we’re very proud of what we do.'
The medicine comes from the leaves of a wild plant, which remains top secret.
It gets mashed to a pulp and mixed with butter and black pepper. It is then eaten and rubbed on the wound.
'If the medicine is administered quickly enough it will save you,' Taj said. 'It has saved my life many times and it seems to work for Kajol too.'
But Kajol's mother, Salma Bano, 45, wishes her daughter would grow out of the snake-phase - especially since the youngster was expelled from school for taking her pets to class in her backpack.
'I want her to go to school like other children. If I had my own way I’d get rid of the snakes but she loves them and so I don’t want to break her heart,' said Salma.
'She now refuses to study and will play with the snakes all day.
'I try to make her study at home but she keeps the snakes with her and gets distracted.'
Taj said: 'We don’t have many visitors. People don’t like our pet snakes so they stay away.
'We don’t mind so much, but it’s sad for Kajol. Children are too scared to come round and play with her. She’s just not like other children.'
Her worried mother added: 'She’ll find it hard to find a husband in the future if she doesn’t stop playing with the snakes.'

Three people died and 34 have been left ill in northwestern China from food poisoning believed linked to tainted milk, the government said, in what is the country's latest food safety scare.
A preliminary investigation showed victims in the city of Pingliang suffered nitrite poisoning after drinking milk, a local government statement said.
Nitrite is a chemical used to make dyes and to preserve meats.
Two suspect dairy farms have been shut down and are being investigated, said the statement issued on Thursday. Pingliang is in Gansu province.
According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, nitrite poisoning can result in nausea, dizziness, respiratory distress, loss of consciousness and seizures.
Such safety incidents are routine for China's notoriously scandal-prone food industries, with the dairy sector a particular area of concern.
The dairy industry was rocked in 2008 when at least six babies died and another 300,000 became ill from milk tainted with the industrial chemical melamine.
Melamine had been added to give the appearance of higher protein levels.
Authorities said at the time that all suspect milk powder had been confiscated or destroyed and promised to clean up the industry, but melamine-tainted products have continued to reach the market.
In July last year, authorities announced they had found 25,000 tonnes of tainted milk powder earlier in 2009.

Last month, the country's largest meat processor was forced to apologise when clenbuterol was found in some of its pork products. The illegal additive can lead to dizziness, heart palpitations and profuse sweating.

Other recent scandals have involved contaminated red wine, bleached mushrooms, fake tofu and recycled cooking oil.

They say money can't buy love – but £1million will get you man's most expensive best friend.
A red Tibetan mastiff has become the priciest dog in the world after being sold for 10 million Chinese yuan, or £945,000.
Big Splash, or Hong Dong in Chinese, was bought by a coal baron from the north of China.
And it's lucky his new master is a multi-millionaire, because the hefty price tag doesn't factor in Big Splash's diet – enough chicken and beef to fill a growing 180lb dog, spiced up with Chinese delicacies such as sea cucumber and abalone. 
His owner will need a big house too, as adult Tibetan mastiffs have been known to weigh as much as 286lb – the same as a sizeable rugby player.
But according to breeder Lu Liang, Big Splash is a 'perfect specimen' and the extravagant price for the 11-month-old is completely justified.
He said: 'We have spent a lot of money raising this dog, and we have the salaries of plenty of staff to pay' – adding that the new owner could charge almost £10,000 a time for Big Splash to breed with a female.
The high price paid for the dog is a sign that the red Tibetan mastiff has become a status symbol in China, replacing jewellery and cars as a way for the super-rich to show off their wealth.
Not only is red considered a lucky colour, but Tibetan mastiffs are thought to be holy animals, blessing their owners' health and security.
Tibetans believe the dogs have the souls of monks and nuns who were not good enough to be reincarnated as humans or into Shambhala, the heavenly realm. 
Owners of the breed have included Queen Victoria, King George IV and  Genghis Khan – who supposedly took 30,000 of the dogs with his army in his bid to conquer Western Europe.
These days there are only around 300 Tibetan mastiffs in the UK, and puppies sell for a more reasonable £850 to £1,000. 
James Pally, a Tibetan mastiff breeder from Pantymwyn near Mold in Flintshire, North Wales, said:
'They are very smart and they think for themselves and can sense danger very acutely.
'Tibetan mastiffs were originally used to guard the livestock and they are very good with other animals and they love children.
'I have six of them and if you don't give them enough attention they sit in front of the TV.'

The title of most expensive dog in the world was previously held by a Tibetan mastiff called Red Lion, who was valued at £915,000 last year.

Veteran Hong Kong actor Law Lok-lam had an unusual run of bad luck when he set what could be a record by dying in five different soap operas in a 24-hour period last week. His character met a bloody end during a fight in the martial arts drama Grace Under Fire, and he vomited blood before expiring in Fate to Fate.
In Relic of an Emissary, Law played the Ming emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, who died after an illness. In two other shows, Police Station No. 7 and comedy Virtues of Harmony, the actor did not die on screen but his death was discussed.

Hong Kong actors whose characters die are given a red packet with a token amount of money for good fortune, and Law, 63, received several from the superstitious production crews before shooting his death scenes. "When I get a job, I don't care if my character in the drama will die. If he is supposed to die, he should go on and die," Law said in a video posted on YouTube by his employer, Hong Kong broadcaster TVB.

However, his multiple "deaths" reportedly upset his daughter. "Why would dying in a drama matter? It's not for real. So my daughter, you shouldn't be unhappy. The most important thing is I've done my job well," Law said. Some fans criticised TVB for making him "die" so often in such a short space of time. A TVB spokesman said: "It was purely a coincidence that Law died five times."
