A 100-year-old Gloucestershire woman believes her longevity may be down to cigarettes and alcohol.
Lorna Gobey, of Cheltenham, smokes 20 cigarettes a day and regularly enjoys a glass of Guinness with a whisky chaser.
She smoked her first cigarette in 1940 - and reckons she's gone through over half-a-million since then, reports the Daily Telegraph.
Mrs Gobey said: "I've been smoking since I was 30 and have had no problems at all.
"People try and tell you it's bad for you but my family wouldn't dare ask me to stop. If they did, I'd put them across my lap and give them a slapped bum.
"I've always tried to enjoy life. I think it's important to do the things you want to do and not to let things get you down.
"I like my smokes, a drop of whiskey and Guinness and I still love to play skittles. Perhaps it's part of the reason I have lived for so long. I never thought I'd make it to 100, but I have. I'm quite amazed really."
Mrs Gobey, who has 27 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren, toasted her birthday at her local Labour Club with her favourite tipple.
Her son Bob Fisher, 66, said: "She smokes faster than the rest of us and still loves a drink. She loves bingo, playing a tune on the mouth organ and riding around town in cars."

Hundreds of desperate job-seekers took part in a 'binman olympics' to compete for just 14 jobs as road sweepers.
Nearly 500 entrants competed for what are considered plum civil service jobs in Gumi, South Korea, which is suffering a severe economic crisis.
Contestants had to sprint with a 20kg bag of rice to show endurance and race against the clock to sweep 100 metres of simulated road.
In another section they had to demonstrate how quickly they can dispose of dog poo using tongs and plastic bags while being cheered on by family members and friends.
Kim Hye-ran, 27, explained: "If my husband gets the job our problems are over.
"I'll open a chicken restaurant next to our house. Street cleaners knock off at four o'clock, so in the evening, he can deliver fried chicken."

Two vials said to contain the spirits of ghosts exorcised from a house in New Zealand have been put up for sale on an online auction site.
Entitled 'Two Captured Ghosts', the lot had reached a top price of nearly £200 on TradeMe, New Zealand's equivalent of eBay.
The seller claims the spirits were captured by an exorcist from a spiritual church at a property in Christchurch, reports News.com.au.
One is believed to be the ghost of a man called Les Graham who died in the house in the 1920s.
"The exorcist believes this spirit likes to make himself known and spook people. but he is not a very strong spirit," explained the seller.
"The other spirit came from when me and my partner stupidly did an Oujia Board.
"We believe it is a little girl who likes to move things and turn things on and off. Exorcist says she is very strong and if left will get stronger.
"We have had no (paranormal) activity since they were bottled on July 15, 2009," the seller added. "So I believe they are in the bottles."
The auction said the "holy water" in the vials dulled the spirit's energy and put them to sleep. To revive the spirit, the buyer would need to pour the contents into a dish and let it "evaporate into your house''.
"I just want to get rid of them as they scare me,'' the seller said.

Spending eternity on top of Marilyn Monroe has cost one lucky bidder $4.6 million, according to online auction web site eBay, which ann-ounced the winning bid for the burial crypt directly above the movie star.

It was not immediately clear who made the winning offer of $4,602,100 for the privileged spot in Westwood Village Memorial Park in Los Angeles.

The plot is being vacated by its current occupant, Richard Poncher, whose widow made the prime resting place available in order to pay off her
$1.6 million Beverly Hills home.

An eBay spokesperson was not available to confirm the extraordinary auction, which began on August 14 with bidding beginning at $500,000.

Twenty-one offers in total were received, with the winning bid posted at 9.15am on Monday under the pseudonym ‘O***S’.

“Here is a once in a life-time and into eternity opportunity to spend your eternal days directly above Marilyn Monroe,” the posting on the web site described the property as.

Elsie Poncher, whose husband died 23 years ago aged 81, had told the Los Angeles Times that he had bought the space in 1954 from Monroe’s ex-husband, baseball star Joe DiMaggio, and that she had complied with Poncher’s dramatic, if cheeky demand about how he was to be buried.

“He said, ‘If I croak, if you don’t put me upside down over Marilyn, I’ll haunt you the rest of my life’,” she said in the Times.

Richard Poncher, a businessman well-connected to the Chicago mafia, also bought the spot one space over, which is where Elsie plans to relocate him to.

The widower, who won’t give her age but admits she is over 70, says she wants to be cremated when she dies.

Being buried close to Monroe has already proved a draw for some, with Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner purchasing a spot to the side of the sex-symbol’s for $75,000 in 1992.

Tongue bifurcation, or tongue splitting, is a type of body modification in which the tongue is cut centrally from its tip part of the way towards its base, forking the end. In addition to being covered under laws prohibiting the unlicensed practice of medicine, tongue splitting is now banned in the U.S. military. Thus, by necessity, it is an underground practice (in the USA). The issue of tongue splitting has also divided bioethicists.

In most cases, the split is created through scalpeling or surgical laser. To achieve a more rounded and natural look, the upper and lower part of the cutting area in both halves are often sutured together with stitches during the healing process. This prevents sharp, unnatural looking edges on the new "tongues" which would otherwise occur.

Before splitting, some have a relatively thick tongue piercing where the base of the split is supposed to be, and wait until this is fully healed before going through the procedure, but the stretched piercing location will usually result in a visually different tissue than the sutured area.

Healing of the tongue takes approximately 1-2 weeks and during this time, the person will be unable to eat or even talk.

Tongue bifurcation is, however, not necessarily a surgical procedure. Self modifiers often choose to achieve a split by gradually tightening nylon bindings inserted through an existing tongue piercing over a long period of time. This method is long, arduous, and requires a high pain tolerance.

Tongue splitting is reversible but the reversal is even more painful than the tongue splitting procedure.

The raid on the Netanya home had been planned for a while as part of a campaign against minors suspected of breaking and entering. But the detectives who carried out the raid were surprised to find something unusual: Throughout the home were sacks full of hundreds of packets of coffee, dozens of new towels bearing hotel logos, and various complimentary toiletries provided by prestigious hotels.

The items are believed to have been pilfered from the Sheraton-Moriah in Eilat during the past week, when the family vacationed there.

"We got to the place with a search warrant, which we also had for other homes in the city, when the owner opened the door and appeared tired, and said they had just returned from a hotel in Eilat," an officer at the Sharon Police juvenile division said. "But as soon as we entered the house we noticed piles of hotel towels, over 60, hundreds of bags of Turkish coffee were on the kitchen counter and they were falling over on the floor, and there was a lot of toiletries and other items from hotels."

The officer said that initially the family tried to justify taking the items by saying that these were "souvenirs" and that "everyone does it," explaining that the volume of the loot reflects the size of their family.

But when the mother realized that the officers planned to arrest the juveniles for theft, she said she had taken the items, and was held for questioning at the police station.

"The quantity of towels and other items was so large, we needed another patrol car to move it to the station," an officer said. The mother was released to five days' house arrest and the police informed the hotel of the find. It remains unclear how the family managed to leave the hotel with such a large quantity of stolen items.

Bark at a dog and it might bite you back. Or get you arrested. That's what happened to a 26-year-old man who was arrested by Three Rivers police for allegedly barking at a police dog.

The incident occurred on Monday evening while a police officer was investigating a suspicious situation at an apartment complex, according to Three Rivers Police Department. The officer left his canine companion, Anija, in his patrol car, police said.

The man, who was outside the building, approached the vehicle. He began ``to torment the police dog by barking and shouting at the animal,'' causing the dog to become ``excited and very aggressive,'' police said.

The man was arrested for harassing a police animal and was released on bond. He is facing charges of disorderly conduct.
