A two-year-old is seriously ill after being admitted to hospital with 50 sewing needles inside him.
Doctors in Brazil believe the needles were deliberately pushed into his body through his skin - including 17 discovered in his digestive system.
Police have launched an investigation to discover who carried out the attack amid fears the boy may have been used as part of a sinister black magic ritual.

One of the needles perforated the youngster's left lung.  Stunned medics admitted him to hospital in Barreiras in the state of Bahma, north east Brazil, after X-rays showed the 50 metal objects in his abdomen, neck, thorax and legs. Today it emerged the macabre crime may be linked to a bizarre black magic ritual.
The boy, taken to hospital by a relative on Sunday with stomach pains, has not been named.
His mother, maid Marma Souza Santos, has told police she does not know who is responsible and said his gran used to look after her son while she was out at work.
But she has reportedly claimed in a statement the youngster's stepfather may have used the infant in a black magic ritual. He has denied the claims.
Police chief Helder Fernandes Santana said: 'We are certain someone introduced the needles because of the position of some of them in the child's body.
'At the moment we don't know who did it.
'It's such a strange situation. We could be looking at attempted murder, a serious assault or some type of revenge attack.  We're not ruling anything out at the moment.'
Doctors at West Hospital in Barreiras where the boy is currently being treated, said they would considering trying to remove sewing needles just under the surface of the boy's skin.
But hospital director Luiz Cesar said none of the needles were endangering his life at the moment - and said he may have to live with them inside his body because of the risk involved in removing them.

He added: 'We're certain the boy didn't swallow the needles of his own accord.
'If he did, they would be in his gastrointestinal tract.
'I've never seen a case of its kind.
'Our priority at the moment is the boy's lung which was perforated by one of the needles.
'Fortunately his life is not in danger.' The boy's dad Gessivaldo Alves added: 'We have faith in God that he is going to get better.'

The 'light-sport airplane' promises to bring more 'flexibility and convenience to your flying'.

It is powered by a 100 hp, Rotax 912S, four-stroke engine.
A spokeswoman for designers Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, USA, said: ‘You can keep your Transition in your garage.


‘Then you simply drive to your local airport, fly up to 460 miles, land, convert and drive directly to your destination.

‘You'll always be ready to drive or fly.’

A series of simple commands made from the cockpit convert the white craft from plane to car and vice versa.

But the wings only fold out if the correct key code is entered by someone with a pilot's licence .


Unlike many 'flying car' concepts which use thrusters to take off vertically, the Transition needs a short runway to take to the air.

The spokeswoman added: ‘Never let questionable weather cancel or endanger your trip again.

‘You can simply divert and continue on the ground until the weather clears.’

You can secure your very own Transition aeroplane by simply paying a deposit of £6,500.

The Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at George W. Bush could get a wife as a reward for his protest.

An Egyptian man has offered his 20-year-old daughter in marriage to Muntadhar Al-Zeidi - as it emerged the journalist has written to the Iraqi prime minister begging to be pardoned.

'Zeidi said in his letter that his big ugly act cannot be excused,' said Yasin Majeed, Maliki's media adviser.

Majeed said that Zeidi added: 'But I remember in the summer of 2005, I interviewed your Excellency and you told me, 'Come in, this is your house.' And so I appeal to your fatherly feelings to forgive me.'

The daughter, Amal Saad Gumaa, said she agreed with her father's idea to marry the Zeidi for his 'heroic' attack on Bush in a Baghdad press conference on Sunday.

She said: 'This is something that would honour me. I would like to live in Iraq, especially if I were attached to this hero.'

Her father, Saad Gumaa, said he had called Durgham, Al-Zeidi's brother, to tell him of the offer.
'I find nothing more valuable than my daughter to offer to him, and I am prepared to provide her with everything needed for marriage,' he added.

Al-Zeidi's gesture has struck a chord across the Arab world, where President Bush is widely despised for invading Iraq in 2003 and for his support for Israel.

Amal is a student in the media faculty at Minya University in central Egypt.

On Wednesday Al-Zeidi failed to appear in court, instead seeing an Iraqi judge from his jail cell.

Durgham Zeidi alleged his brother may have been too seriously injured to appear in a courtroom.

He said the journalist suffered a broken arm and ribs after being struck by Iraqi security agents.

Durgham was unable to say whether his brother had sustained the injuries while being overpowered during Sunday's protest against Bush's visit or while in custody later.

Despite widespread sympathy for his act across the region, Iraqi authorities sent the case to the Central Criminal Court of Iraq, which handles security and terrorism cases.

An investigative judge will review the evidence and decide whether Al-Zeidi should stand trial - a process that could take months.

Yesterday chaos erupted in the Iraqi parliament as lawmakers argued over whether to set Al-Zeidi free.
The speaker even announced he was quitting, though officials later said he may have been upset.
Iraq officials have recommended charging Al-Zeidi with insulting a foreign leader, a charge which carries a maximum sentence of two years imprisonment or a small fine.

But investigative judges have sweeping powers under Iraqi law to amend and add charges - or even dismiss the case.
