Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has apparently split from his wife Ludmilla and is preparing to tie the knot with 24-year-old gymnast Alina Kabaeva.
The revelation comes after a Moscow newspaper reported that Putin recently split with Ludmilla and is preparing to marry the young and very pretty Kabaeva.
A Russian website alleged that Alina was seen kissing Putin in a Moscow restaurant.
There is added piquancy in the fact that, despite her youth, Kabaeva has recently been made a member of parliament.The gymnast is one of a number of young and beautiful Russian dancers and athletes who, under Putin's patronage, have lately become deputies in the Duma the country's lower parliament.
Aged only 15, she won the gold medal in the 1998 European Championships.
The following year she secured the world title and was favourite to repeat the success at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.Disaster struck, however, when she dropped her hoop and it rolled off the carpet.
She went home with only a bronze and all of Russia wept with her. It is said that this was when she first came to Putin's attention and made his acquaintance.

A Chinese man who claims he can sleep on a rope tied between two trees is hoping to get into the Guinness Books of Records.
Gao Yang, 37, says it took him nearly a quarter of a century to master the skill but he can now sleep on the rope for seven hours. Gao, of Anshan, northeastern China's Liaoning Province, says he practices on a 10ft high rope in his local park every morning.

He said: "I met a master when I was 12, and he taught me some tips. It took me nearly 24 years to acquire the skill.

"It's nearly impossible for ordinary people to do this. It needs the perfect coordination of body muscles and balancing skills. I am finally ready to contact Guinness in the coming days and am confident of being able to set a world record."

A Frenchman whose arms and legs had to be amputated has successfully swum the English Channel.

Philippe Croizon, 42, swam from Folkestone in Kent to Cap Gris Nez in just over 13 hours, reports the BBC.
He had set himself a target of 24 hours and his team believe he has set a record time for a disabled swimmer.
"I did it! It's mad!" Mr Croizon said on arrival, saying he wanted to become 'a representative of someone overcoming his restrictions'.
"I've done this for myself, for my family, and for all those who have suffered tragedy and lost their taste for life," added the father-of-two.
Sixteen years ago, Mr Croizon suffered a severe electric shock while removing a television aerial from a roof.
A current surged through him from a nearby powerline and doctors were forced to amputate his limbs.
Mr Croizon told the BBC that at no point did he feel he was not going to make it, despite pains and aches all over his body.
Philippe Croizon's father said his son had had favourable wind conditions and had even had three dolphins swimming alongside him for a period - a "sign of good luck".

A Cambodian Buddhist monk has been jailed after secretly filming hundreds of women as they bathed naked with holy water at a temple, a judge said on Saturday.
Net Khai, 37, was sentenced to one year in prison for producing and distributing pornography after allegations emerged that he taped more than 600 women pouring sacred water over themselves in a pagoda bathroom.
Judge Kim Dany said the former monk was handed the prison term on Friday, over charges relating to a 23-year-old victim who approached police and said that people had been sharing video clips of the women on their mobile phones.
Another three women have since come forward to the court to file complaints.
The judge said the court also fined Net Khai two million riel $(500) and ordered him to pay compensation of $10,000 to the victim.

“He still faces similar charges brought against him from three other women,” she said.
Net Khai was arrested in June at his pagoda in the Cambodian capital and was subsequently stripped of his religious status.
Buddhist monks are revered in Cambodia, where Buddhists make up more than 90 per cent of the population.
There are more than 55,000 monks across the country, which has 4,300 temple complexes. — AFP

Pope Benedict XVI yesterday issued his strongest apology yet for child abuse by the clergy, denouncing it as an ‘unspeakable crime’.
In a sermon at Westminster Cathedral, the Pope expressed his ‘deep sorrow’ to victims of sexual abuse by priests, and said the scandal had shamed him and the Church.
‘I think of the immense suffering caused by the abuse of children, especially within the Church and by her ministers,’ he told the congregation.

‘Above all, I express my deep sorrow to the innocent victims of these unspeakable crimes, along with my hope that the power of Christ’s grace, his sacrifice of reconciliation, will bring deep healing and peace to their lives.

‘I also acknowledge with you the shame and humiliation which all of us have suffered because of these sins.’
The apology comes after his acknowledgement at the start of his historic state visit to Britain that the Catholic Church had failed to deal with abusive priests decisively or quickly enough.
In a further move to defuse the controversy, the Pope held a secret meeting with five victims of child abuse yesterday: three from Yorkshire, one from London and one from Scotland.
At the Central London meeting, which lasted about 30 minutes, the Pope again expressed his ‘sorrow and shame’.
In a statement, the Vatican said: ‘He was moved by what they had to say and expressed his deep sorrow and shame over what victims and their families had suffered.

‘He prayed with them and assured them that the Catholic Church is continuing to implement effective measures designed to safeguard young people, and that it is doing all in its power to investigate allegations, to collaborate with civil authorities and to bring to justice clergy accused of these egregious crimes.
‘As he has done on other occasions, he prayed that all the victims of abuse might experience healing and reconciliation, and be able to overcome their past and present distress with serenity and hope for the future.’
However, the Pope’s words and actions failed to quell the anger of thousands of demonstrators who joined a Protest The Pope march through Central London yesterday.

Chinese billionaire Chen Guangbiao has answered the calls by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to give away his fortune to charity.

He drafted a letter at 1.30am one day after thinking about it the whole night.

The letter which had him promising to donate his entire fortune to charity after he dies was posted on his company website on Sept 5.

It was, effectively, an acceptance letter to an invitation from fellow billionaires Gates and Buffett to attend a charity dinner on Sept 29 in Beijing. It was also a response to earlier pledges the philanthropists made in the United States to give, at least, half of their wealth to charity after their deaths.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation invited about 50 of China's super-rich to the dinner.
But only Chen and Zhang Xin - CEO of real estate developer SOHO China - have publicly confirmed their attendance.

Chen, 42 - chairman of recycling company Jiangsu Huangpu Renewable Resources Utilization – is estimated to have a wealth of 5bil yuan (RM2.3bil).
He has, in fact, announced in 2007 that he would give away 95 per cent of his property after his death.

"Every year I donate at least 50 per cent of my company's profits to charity," Chen explained.

So far, Chen has donated more than 1.3bil yuan (RM599mil) and helped more than 700,000 people.
After the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, Chen not only made hundreds of million yuan in donations, but also went to the tragedy site with an aid team.

"Wealth is like water, always moving, changing from hand to hand. Instead of keeping it, sharing with others is obviously a wiser choice.

"I will not keep any wealth for my children. I started from scratch and they can do the same," Chen said.

Chen leads a frugal life. He does not smoke or drink and eats in his company's staff canteen most of the time.

Born into a farmer's family, Chen spent his childhood in poverty. Two of his siblings died from malnutrition.

Since the age of 10, Chen earned his own money to continue his studies.

As many rural areas in China did not have tap water in the 1970s, he used to carry water to the local market two km away to sell it to passers-by.

He earned 4 yuan (RM1.80) throughout the summer, with which he not only paid his own tuition for that year, but also helped one of his classmates.

"That was my first donation and my teacher awarded me a red paper flower for it in class.

"The honour and the feeling of giving made me so happy, which encouraged me to continue to help others," he recalled.

Chen trained himself to become an entrepreneur when he was in college, where he majored in traditional Chinese medicine.
His fortune began to accumulate from selling medical equipment in 1998.
He gave 30,000 yuan (RM13,810) to Zhu Lili, age 13, who suffered from heart disease. Zhu has since grown up healthily and graduated from college.
"By donating my entire fortune to charity, I'm putting pressure on other rich Chinese. Hopefully, they will follow."

Let's hope the neighbours like cabbage. Amateur gardener Jimmy Hill is promising to share his crop with them and, judging by this picture, there's a lot to go round.
Mr Hill, 53, has grown a row of the monster vegetables, the biggest of which is 5ft across and will weigh 80lb when it's ready to cut.
Mechanic Mr Hill also grows onions, carrots and cucumbers in the rear garden of his home in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.
It is not his first bumper crop and in previous years he and wife Jackie, 51, have run out of ideas about how to eat them.
'I like them and my wife is a wonderful cook but I have to admit there are only so many ways you can cook them, so I reckon we'll give them away to neighbours.
'People say I should enter shows but for me it's just a hobby.'
