Colombian art student John Jairo Villamil has died after covering his head with a rubbish bag during a performance piece. He suffocated during a performance about his perception of his hometown Bogota.
It involved him covering his head with a bag and placing his feet inside a bucket of water while holding a chain with bills in one hand and a leaf in the other.

The 25-year-old’s audience at the Universidad del Bosque, in Colombia, thought his heavy breathing and convulsions were part of the performance and did not react.

He was described as brain dead immediately after the show – which aimed to depict the perception of his hometown Bogota – and declared dead five days later. His mother is said to have provided tips on how to make the performance more shocking and is now blaming the university for neglect.

A 16-year-old Taiwanese girl was found to have a whole nest of of ants in her ears.
The girl, from Taipei, discovered this when she went to see a doctor after suffering from itchiness in ears.
Dr Hung Yuan-Tsung, chief of the Otolaryngology division of Taipei City Hospital found over 20 ants in her right ear.

There were also a few ants in her left ear.
Apparently, the girl who loves eating sweet food on her bed had scratched her ears and that had attracted the ants.

The girl said there were a few occasions when she found ants crawling out from her eats, but had never imagined that the insects were actually living there.
Her infected ears were red and swollen but luckily for her, early treatment saved her ear drums.

If you like nothing more than discussing people’s love lives and revel in speculating on which colleagues are looking for a new job, there’s no need to feel guilty.

For we are born to gossip, it seems. The human brain has evolved to thrive on tittle-tattle – and the cattier the better, scientists say.

In fact, exchanging juicy information about other people’s lives is a quick way to distinguish friends from foe and helps protect us from harm.

The proclamation comes from American researchers who studied how much importance the brain attaches to pictures of people.
Their experiments were designed around a phenomenon called binocular rivalry. This is where a different image is put in front of each eye and the brain ‘sees’ one and then the other.

Importantly, the amount of time spent on each image is usually not under the person’s conscious control.
In the first experiment, 66 men and women were shown photos of people and given pieces of information about them.
Some were mundane, such as they had walked past someone on the street or had drawn the curtains in the room.

Other tit-bits were positive or negative gossip, such as they had helped an elderly woman with her shopping or thrown a chair at a school friend. The volunteers then had one of the pictures placed in view of their left or right eye and an image of a house in front of the other.

 Their brains processed one image and then the other and the amount of time they spent on each picture was timed.

Their eyes and minds dwelt slightly longer on the faces of people embroiled in scandal, the scientists found.
A second experiment showed this was not simply due to them remembering information about the person better.
This means, say the Harvard University researchers, that the brain is naturally drawn to gossip.

They told Science journal: ‘This preferential selection for perceiving bad people might protect us from liars and cheaters by allowing us to view them for longer and explicitly gather more information about their behaviour. Gossip is a vital thread in human social interaction.
‘It is a way to learn socially relevant information about other people’s character or personality without having to directly experience their triumphs or misadventures. It is functional ... allowing us to live in big groups.’
Gossiping is the human equivalent of picking fleas off each other, they added.
Past research has shown that gossip accounts for up to 80 per cent of our conversations. Just five per cent is malicious.

A couple who claim they are Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene have set up base in Queensland's Bible Belt and are drawing in disciples from across the country. The pair, real names Alan John Miller and Mary Suzanne Luck, operate from rural Wilkesdale, near Kingaroy, where they claim to have been joined by 30-40 followers.
"My name is Jesus and I'm serious," Mr Miller says. Cult watchers and the Anglican and Catholic churches are concerned the pair, who ask followers to donate to sustain them, could draw in the vulnerable.

Mr Miller bought a 16ha property at Wilkesdale in 2007 and his Divine Truth followers have since been buying nearby blocks to be close to the charismatic leader, 47, and Ms Luck, 32.
Locals and real estate agents confirmed the group had sparked an unlikely property boom, with estimates they have bought up to 30 blocks and with new properties in high demand.
Followers joined forces in 2009 to buy a $400,000, 240ha property where they hold weekly meetings and plan to build a centre for international visitors. In an apparent coincidence, land clearing has created a giant cross on neighbouring properties. Locals insisted it was not carved deliberately.

For many, one wife is enough.
But Islamic faith healer Bello Maasaba has only said: 'I'm done' after an incredible 107 marriages, producing 185 children.
And the 87-year-old Nigerian, who now has an extended family of more than 5,000 people, says obedience is the quality he most values in a wife.
The polygamist claimed to have a revelation from God in the 1970s, telling him to
become a healer and take a succession of wives.

'In his wisdom, God has given me the power and strength to give them the sexual portion they need. If I didn't satisfy them, they would leave'
'I get a revelation from God telling me any woman I'm going to marry. If it wasn't from God, I wouldn't have gone beyond two,' he told the LA Times.
However, his revelations and subsequent marriages have led him to disputes to the ruling Islamic authorities in Bida, Nigeria.
Sharia law suggests four wives should be the limit for a Muslim man.

As a result, Islamic police arrested Mr Maasaba in September 2008, throwing him into jail after he disobeyed demands to divorce 82 of his wives, keeping just four.
His loyal wives protested outside the prison, and later, at the nation's High Court, he was released after 57 testified saying they had all married him willingly.
Today, the wealthy guru lives with 89 of his wives, the youngest just 19 and the oldest is 64 in an 89-room building.
Nine others have died while he has divorced 12 for disobeying him.
Of his 185 children, just 133 are still living and controversially when any are sick, he bans them from receiving any hospital treatment relying instead on his skills as a healer.

'I told them not to go to hospital. They must report to me and pray. Some of my wives don't have that confidence,' he said.
'They would take them to hospital behind my back. If anyone goes behind my back, the child will develop a swelling in the body and will eventually die.'
But despite his hard-line approach to family life, Maasaba is held in high affection by all his wives, who he claims to satisfy romantically.
He said: 'In his wisdom, God has given me the power and strength to give them the sexual portion they need. If I didn't satisfy them, they would leave.'

A 29-year-old woman is believed to be the youngest most prolific mother in Taiwan.

Married for 12 years, Lai Zhen Ni has already given birth to two girls and six boys, and is currently pregnant with her ninth child.

Lai, from Hsinchu, said her eldest son is in Year Six while the eighth daughter is 10 months old.
She is expecting the new arrival by the end of the year.

"Maybe I can beat my mother," she joked, adding her mother - now 46 - delivered her first baby at the age of only 17.

"My mother had 11 children and the age difference between the eldest and the youngest is 24 years.

"My youngest brother is three years younger than my eldest son," she laughed.

When the headmistress of Meihua Elementary School heard that Lai was pregnant again, she asked the eldest son: "Is it true?"

The boy, who has to take care of his siblings, answered: "Yes, she's four months pregnant now… my parents keep on having kids, I'm quite tired already."

Lai's husband Peng Ke Yong said doctors and nurses have advised him to undergo birth control measures.

"But children are gifts from God. Let nature take its course," said the odd-job worker and farmer.
