Tax authorities in Germany are poised to claim 50 per cent of the money that a teenage student earned for 'auctioning' her virginity because they claim it was 'tantamount to prostitution'.
Romanian-born Alina Percea, who is a student in Germany, was paid £8,800 in cash for a weekend of sex with the Italian businessman after she auctioned her virginity online.
But tax officials in Berlin regard the 18-year-old's act as 'nothing more than prostitution'.
Prostitution is legal in Germany - but it is heavily taxed.
'It is not a moral standpoint but a fiscal one,' an official said. 'Prostitution is not an illegal act in Germany, but not paying tax on earned money is.
'Consequently we are assessing her case and it looks likely she will have to pay around half of the sum she gained.'
The Romanian-born computer studies student's visa allows her to work in Germany for 90 days - even as a prostitute.
One tax expert said: 'Even if she was taxed as a purveyor of erotic moments, or whatever she wants to call what she did, she would have to pay tax on it.  Prostitution is merely a means for the bureaucrats to pin her down for a claim.
'She would have been better off keeping quiet about this strange transaction.'
It also emerged that, because Alina earned so much in such a short time, she may even be liable for a hefty VAT bill too. 
VAT in Germany works out to 19 per cent, meaning the sale of her virginity could land her with just over £3,000 in the end.

'When we have hard figures then we can make an accurate assessment,' said a German inland revenue spokesman.
Alina, who studies in Mannheim, told how a 45-year-old Italian businessman took her virginity with unprotected sex at a luxury Venetian hotel.
'I liked the man and got on with him well. He didn't look 45, and he seemed much younger.

'We spoke in English as I can't speak Italian and he can't speak Romanian.
He paid me a lot of compliments throughout the day, and he was very funny and charming. We got on very well, and I was pleased he'd won,' said Alina.

He told me he'd like to see me again, and I agreed.
'I hope to see the man again - and next time I won't make him pay,' she added.

When they chose him as mayor, residents of the seaside town of Knott End no doubt hoped Ian Stafford would personify their decent, respectable values.
Instead, the 59-year-old was yesterday beginning a two-year prison sentence after admitting breaking into local women's homes and stealing their underwear.
Several residents had become worried by the disappearance of items from their underwear drawers, and one even had a covert camera installed in her bedroom to catch the culprit.
But local people were shocked when they learned the thief was none other than the twice elected Mayor of Preesall and Knott End in Lancashire.
Police were handed tapes showing the respected bachelor breaking in and helping himself to personal items, carrying out sex acts and then leaving. Yesterday Stafford, who resigned as mayor and as an independent councillor following his arrest, was told by a judge he was guilty of a 'revolting' breach of trust and jailed.
The bachelor, who worked as a handyman or gardener, was entrusted to enter the houses on his own.
But after the damning CCTV footage showing him wandering around, naked from the waist down, police raided his home. There they found up to £900 worth of women's underwear - some in bags with the names of victims written on them.
When interviewed, Stafford told them: 'I feel deeply ashamed at the whole scenario because I have hurt people who have been excellent friends - I could not wish for better.
'I wish I had said something to someone earlier. I am not proud of any of this, I am sickened. I wish I could turn the clock back.' Yesterday at Preston Crown Court the respected church-goer admitted four counts of burglary, one for each house he had broken into.
Richard Howarth, defending, said the ex-mayor wished to send his 'profuse and abject apologies' to his victims and had to bear the 'stigma and shame' of what he had done.
Jailing him for two years, Judge Heather Lloyd told him he was guilty of 'a gross violation of the trust placed in you as an employee and friend'. 'The victims would never have dreamed that trust would have been abused in such a revolting fashion,' she added.
'You were well respected as the Mayor of Preesall and you were in that prominent position when these offences were committed.'She advised Stafford - who showed no emotion as he was sentenced - to undergo therapy, a call backed by his fourth victim.
Writing to the court, she said: 'He has been punished severely but I hope he can put it all behind him and show himself to be the kind and caring man known to so many.'
Detective Constable Steve Montgomery of Lancashire police said: 'This has been a distressing ordeal for the victims who are pleased with the sentence.'

He’s known as the ‘gentle giant’ around school and his fellow pupils and teachers certainly look up to him.
At only 15 years of age, Bradley Fisher measures in at 6ft 11in… and he’s still growing.
He is more than two feet taller than one of his smallest schoolfriends, Zoe McDermott, who stands at 4ft 6in.
Luckily for Bradley, who has to import size 15 shoes from America and sleeps in a specially-made bed, his size helps him play Basketball.

He has just been selected to represent England at under-16 level.
‘I love playing basketball so being tall really helps with that and it gives me an edge,’ said the teenager from Chorley, Lancashire.
And despite having duck for every door frame, Bradley insists nothing tops being of great height.
‘I like being tall,’ said the Year 10 pupil at Southlands. ‘My friends think it’s really good and so do my mum and dad.
‘It definitely comes in handy when I go shopping with my mum and she needs things from the top shelf.
‘When it comes to buying clothes, we just have to order the biggest size and then hope it fits.’
Bradley, who is preparing for the European basketball championships in Nottingham, added: ‘Even when I was at nursery I was much taller than everyone else.

‘People always said I was going to be tall, but it seemed to go in phases when I would grow and then stop and then grow again.’
The player already has five inches on the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan, who measured in at 6ft 6in.
However, he has at least eight inches to grow before being in the running for the title of Britain’s tallest teen.

That accolade is currently held by 19-year-old Paul Sturgess who is 7ft 7in tall.
Southlands deputy head Brian Souter said Bradley is the tallest pupil he has taught there in more than 35 years.
He said: ‘He is by far the tallest student we have had at Southlands whilst I have taught here.
‘I think other than Bradley we had a pupil who was 6ft 7in, but that was in the 1970s.
‘He is a gentle giant – very friendly, very popular and a well intentioned student.’

Dubai opened the world's tallest skyscraper in a glitzy ceremony this evening that was meant to put a brave face on crushing debt woes.

The £1billion tower reaches 2,717 ft, 200 storeys into the sky, exceeding the next highest structure by some 1,000 ft.

Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum renamed the tower Burj Khalifa after the president of the United Arab Emirates and the ruler of the neighbouring emirate of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan.

Abu Dhabi has facilitated $25 billion in bailout funds for Dubai in the past year, fuelling expectations that Dubai will make concessions or cede some of its commercial power to its wealthier neighbour.

Concerns about Dubai's $100-billion debt pile, which has made Dubai's stock exchange one of the world's worst performing, overshadowed both the ceremony and boasts by the builder, Emaar Propertie, that the Burj heralds a new dawn.
'The worry for Dubai is that the event will be remembered as a second bout of hubris,' said David Butter, regional director for Middle East and North Africa at Economist Intelligence Unit.
The first bout was in November, 2008, two months after the collapse of Lehman Bros, when Dubai spent $24 million on the opening ceremony of the Atlantis Hotel, an event that did more to highlight a taste for extravagance than assuage fears that the economic crisis was not being taken seriously.
Emaar says property prices have now stabilised, confounding wider expectations for stress in the sector.
'You have to ask, "why we are building all this?" To bring quality of life and a smile to people and I think we should continue to do that,' said Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar, the Arab world's largest listed developer.
'Crises come and go,' Alabbar said. 'We build for years to come ... We must have hope and optimism.'
The complex of apartments, offices, shops, restaurants, a mosque, gym, nightclub and Giorgio Armani-designed hotel, was designed to the brief that residents need never leave.

A number of the higher floors – up to the 160th – have been designated as office space, while there is a restaurant on the 122nd floor and a gym, with an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, on the 123rd floor – some 1,440 feet off the ground.
On the 124th floor is the world's highest observation deck. The Burj Dubai is also intending to host the world's highest nightclub – on the 143rd floor. 
Officials insist the tower is no white elephant. It is still the 'jewel in the gulf', a spokesman said.
'It is the tallest building in the world and the first of its kind,' he said. 'From inside it looks like a Porsche if you want to talk about luxury.'

And in response to the increasing terrorist threat throughout the world - such as those on the World Trade Center, the bombings in London and the attempted detonation of an explosive on a plane in Detroit on Christmas Day - the Burj has in-built 'refuge floors', situated at 25 to 30 storey intervals that are more fire resistant and have separate air supplies in case of emergency.

'What has been done is meeting the individual customer's needs. We have met the contracted agreement. Since it started it has continued at one floor being built every week.
'The dates are not confirmed yet but at present we will hand over the residence suites on March 22, the Armani Residences on January 17 and the corporate suites on March 1.'
Investors took little heart from today's opening with Emaar shares closing down 3.4 pe rcent, pulling Dubai's broader index 2.6 per cent lower.

'This is the culmination of Dubai's momentum and not just Emaar's,' said Saud Masud, UBS head of research.

'It is probably the end of Dubai mega projects for the next several years as the emirate tries to rationalise its resources and looks to build the economy again in some way or another.'

In a sign Dubai is trying to meet its obligations, DP World, a subsidiary of state-owned holding company Dubai World, said it had paid obligations tied to a sukuk and a bond issue on time

Dubai sent shockwaves through global markets on November 25 when it said it would request a standstill on billions of dollars of debts linked to state-held holding firm Dubai World and its property units Limitless and Nakheel, developer of three palm-shaped islands.

Dubai World is expected to pitch a formal standstill proposal on its debt payments to creditors this month, while it comes up with a restructuring plan.

In the week that Britain's high speed rail link closed down because the wrong sort of snow interfered with the engine's electronics, China unveiled the world's fastest train service on one of the coldest days of the year.
Days after thousands of passengers were left stranded when Eurostar services were cancelled, China's new system connects the modern cities of Guangzhou and Wuhan at an average speed of 217mph - and it took just four years to build.
The super-high-speed train reduces the 664-mile journey to just a three-hour ride and cuts the previous journey time by more than seven-and-a-half hours, the official Xinhua news agency said.
Work on the project began in 2005 as part of plans to expand a high-speed network aimed at eventually linking Guangzhou, a business hub in southern China near Hong Kong, with the capital Beijing, Xinhua added.'The train can go 245mph, it's the fastest train in operation in the world,' said Zhang Shuguang, head of the transport bureau at the railways ministry.Test runs for the service began earlier in December and the link officially went into service when the first scheduled train left the eastern metropolis of Wuhan on Saturday.By comparison, the average for high-speed trains in Japan was 150mph while in France it was 172mph, said Xu Fangliang, general engineer in charge of designing the link.Beijing has an ambitious rail development programme aimed at increasing the national network from the current 53,437 miles to 74,564 miles, making it the most extensive rail system outside the United States.
China unveiled its first high-speed line at the time of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 - a service linking the capital with the port city of Tianjin.
In September, officials said they planned to build 42 high-speed lines by 2012 in a massive system overhaul as part of efforts to spur economic growth amid the global downturn.The network uses technology developed in co-operation with foreign firms such as Siemens, Bombardier and Alstom.Tickets for the service - which also stops at Changsha, capital of Hunan - went on sale at new stations in the three cities last weekend, with prices ranging from 780 yuan (£71) for first class to 490 yuan (£45) for second class, said a joint document released by the National Development.

The link is expected to pose a real threat to airlines running flights linking the cities.
'High-speed rail has three advantages over air travel: it is more convenient, more punctual and has a better safety record. This could help erode the airlines' market shares,' said Si Xianmin, chairman of China Southern Airlines, the largest domestic airline by fleet size.

From today's launch, 38 out of China Southern Airlines' 160-plus domestic flights will compete with high-speed train links, he said.

A similar service opened on April 1 between Wuhan and Hefei, Anhui province, had already grabbed half of the passengers traveling from Wuhan to Shanghai, said Si.
The Shijiazhuang to Taiyuan link, also opened on April 1, caused sales for China Eastern Airlines' Beijing to Taiyuan flight to slump 36 percent the following day, while private Spring Airlines reduced its Shanghai to Zhengzhou flights due to competition from the Shanghai bullet trains, Beijing News reported.To deal with this threat, China Southern Airlines last week unveiled several counter measures, including cutting ticket prices from Wuhan to Guangzhou by almost half for advanced purchases.
The company also signed a deal with airports in Wuhan and Changsha to give priority to flights to Guangzhou to ensure punctuality.

If railway chiefs over-cut the number of low-cost tickets on slower trains, as they did when the country's first high-speed link opened between Beijing and Tianjin last year, the airlines could win more passengers with cheap offers, said Zhao Jian, professor with Beijing Jiaotong University.

'But whichever side wins, passengers will be the ultimate winner,' he said.
Wu Wenhua, a researcher with the National Development and Reform Commission's comprehensive transport institute, said developing high-speed rail networks is in line with the demand for high-efficiency, low-emissions transport.

An ex-model who was obsessed with maintaining her youthful looks has died  following surgery to make her buttocks firmer.
Former Miss Argentina Solange Magnano, 38, was rushed to hospital with severe  breathing problems after the cosmetic operation.
The mother of eight-year-old twins died on Sunday from a blocked lung artery after spending three days in a critical condition in intensive care.
Her close friend and fashion designer Roberto Piazza said the brunette had become obsessed with her looks as her successful modelling career approached its end.
He said: 'Solange was a girl who had everything. She lived the life of a  goddess, she was the envy of everybody.
'Now she is dead because she wanted a slightly firmer behind.
'She died because of her obsession with beauty.'
Ms Magano, who was crowned Miss Argentina in 1994, previously had cosmetic  surgery on her breasts after the birth of her twins.
Now Last Thursday she travelled from her home in Cordoba to the capital Buenos Aires for the buttock implants.
But she was rushed from a private clinic to hospital shortly after the surgery, a normally routine procedure called gluteoplasty.
It is an operation favoured by women who want fuller and firmer looking buttocks, hoping to look like stars such as Jennifer Lopez or Beyonce Knowles.
Ms Magnano - who had recently launched her own modelling agency Actitud Models  - suffered a pulmonary embolism, a blocked lung artery, and doctors were unable  to save her life.
Her friend Mr Piazza said she had enjoyed a hugely successful career around the  world but became obsessed with her looks after returning home to Argentina.
He said: 'She was a fantastic model. When I first met her I thought 'this girl  is perfect'.

Mr Piazza said Ms Magnano had surgery 'to lift her breasts, which had drooped after she gave birth.'
Then she became obsessed with her buttocks.
'She began to investigate because she wanted it to be firmer. She said she had cellulite,' he said.
Last Thursday she travelled from her home in Cordoba to the capital Buenos Aires for the buttock implants.
But she was rushed from a private clinic to hospital shortly after the surgery, a normally routine procedure called gluteoplasty.


It is an operation favoured by women who want fuller and firmer looking buttocks, hoping to look like stars such as Jennifer Lopez or Beyonce Knowles.
Ms Magnano - who had recently launched her own modelling agency Actitud Models  - suffered a pulmonary embolism, a blocked lung artery, and doctors were unable  to save her life.


Her friend Mr Piazza said she had enjoyed a hugely successful career around the  world but became obsessed with her looks after returning home to Argentina.
He said: 'She was a fantastic model. When I first met her I thought 'this girl  is perfect'.

The procedure involved injections of a liquid 'which went to her brain and lungs,' he added.
Ms Magnano's was buried in her home town of San Francisco, in the province of  Cordoba, in front of 300 people on Monday.
Her death has sparked a huge debate in Argentina about the rights and wrongs of  cosmetic surgery.
Around 50,000 cosmetic operations were carried out in the country last year, up  more than 60 per cent in five years.
Increasing numbers of foreigners are travelling to the South America country,  as surgery there is relatively cheap.

Pope John Paul II regularly whipped himself in a sign of 'remorse for his sins,' a nun has sensationally revealed.

Pope John Paul, who died in 2005, is being considered for sainthood by the Catholic Church - the ultimate accolade and a tribute to his holiness.

As part of the Vatican's investigation thousands of documents have been collected and examined by officials from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

Among them is the testimony of Polish nun Tobiana Sobodka, of the Sacred Heart of Jesus order, who worked for Pope John Paul in his private Vatican apartments and at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo near Rome.

Sister Sobodka said: 'Several times he (Pope John Paul) would put himself through bodily penance.

'We would hear it - we were in the next room at Castel Gandolfo. You could hear the sound of the blows when he flagellated himself. He did it when he was still capable of moving on his own.'

The flagellation is also confirmed by another bishop who has given testimony Emery Kabongo, who for several years was a secretary for Pope John Paul.

He said: 'He would punish himself and in particular just before he ordained bishops and priests. Before passing on the sacraments he wanted to prepare himself.

Today a Vatican spokesman said: 'The investigation and documentation is still secret and as such we can make no comment on it until the final report is published.

'I know that the nun in question has returned to Poland and she would have spoken with the Congregation as she was with an order that worked in the apartments of Pope John Paul.'

The Congregation for the Causes of Saints has been investigating the case for Pope John Paul since he died and has approved the late pope's 'heroic virtues' and the paperwork has been sent to his German successor.

New reports of miracles attributed to John Paul II's heavenly intervention are said to arrive in Rome every week.

The key one being examined at the moment is the case of French nun Sister Marie-Simon Pierre, 47, said to have been cured from Parkinson's Disease - the same illness suffered by Pope John Paul II - after praying to him.

The makers claim the GPS tracking device will offer anxious parents peace of mind and allow children the independence to go out to play on their own.

But critics have said the 'tagging' is a step too far in the climate of paranoia over child safety.

Parents will be able to see their child's location on Google maps by texting 'wru' to a special number, or clicking 'where r you' on the secure website linked to the device. The street address and postcode will be displayed.
Safe zones can also be set up in which children can play. An alert will be sent to the parents if the child strays out of that area.
Steve Salmon, of makers Lok8u, said: 'Losing your child, if only for a brief moment, leads to a state of panic and makes parents feel powerless. The overriding aim of num8 is to give children their freedom and parents peace of mind.'
But Dr Michele Elliott, director of children's charity Kidscape, said: 'Is the world really that unsafe that parents need to track their children electronically? I don't think so.'
