SINGAPORE - A SINGAPOREAN woman has generously donated S$1 million to help the Japan quake victims.
Ever since the massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake shook northeast Japan last Friday, Singaporeans have been showing empathy and pouring in support for the battered nation through donation drives, practical help and so on.

Philanthropists are doing their part too, reported Lianhe Wanbao.
At a donation ceremony held yesterday afternoon at the Embassy of Japan in Singapore, Ms Elaine Low, 24, presented the cheque to Ambassador Yoichi Suzuki.
Ms Low is the daughter of Datuk Low Tuck Kwong, 63, who is the founder of Indonesia-based coal mining company Bayan Resources. Mr Low is the third richest man in Indonesia, according to Forbes magazine.
Mr Low said his company has business ties with Japan, and added that his family has friends and relatives in Japan. The family also has fond memories of Japan's Tohoku region, one of the regions worst hit by the earthquake and tsunami.

The Straits Times reported that the $1 million donation came from Ms Low's own pocket. Ms Low, who is in charge of business development at her family's company, is leaving it to the Japanese to decide how to use her donation. The same report said that the donation would most likely go to the Japanese Red Cross.
The spokesman of the Japanese embassy told the Chinese evening daily that the embassy only received a call from the Japanese Association here yesterday evening, informing them of the donation. At short notice, they had to organise a ceremony to host Ms Low.
Ambassdor Suzuki said this is the largest donation received for the tsunami victims so far.

Contributions to date

So far, $235,000 has been raised by the Singapore Red Cross Society, excluding the $500,000 pledged by the Singapore Government, reported The Straits Times today.
World Vision Singapore and Mercy Relief have raised over $190,000 and $43,280 respectively.
The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) will also be collecting donations from tomorrow onwards.

Darco Sangermano, an Italian man, was shot in the head on New Year's Eve, but is alive and well after he sneezed out the bullet in his head.
The 28 year-old was celebrating in Naples with his girlfriend when he was hit by a stray bullet. He was immediately rushed to hospital.

A .22 caliber bullet enter the right side of his head, went past the back of his eye through the socket, hit a bone in his nose and got lodged in his right nostril.

Despite being covered in blood, Sangermano was still conscious as he proceeded to sneeze out the bullet. He told the doctors that he felt fine, apart from a headache.

A surgery was performed to clean up the wound and to get rid of bone fragments.

Dr. Sid Berrone, who attended to Sangermano, said, "The bullet went through his temple, behind his eye, entered the nasal cavity and then became lodged in his nostril before he sneezed it out. Amazing."

He also added the Sangermano was very lucky as he could have been killed.

Full recovery is expected of him and his eyesight will not be affected at all.

Two others were hit by bullets on the same evening, and another person died after being hit by a stray round during the festivities in Naples.

Naples is a city known for its lively end-of-year celebrations involving fireworks and live ammumition.

Tipping the scales at 225kg, 1.58m-tall Liang Yong is known as China's Fattest Person. According to media reports, the 31-year-old - who weighed 5kg at birth, about twice the norm - now eats eight meals a day.

He developed breathing problems last month and his waistline hit 190cm. Doctors say his heart and lungs are severely degenerated.

With equipment like CT scanners failing to work because of his layers of fat, they face an uphill battle to save his life.

AHMEDABAD, India - A private school in the western Indian state of Gujarat made pupils walk over burning coals and broken glass in a test designed to boost their confidence.
Officials at the Riverdale school in the city of Surat on Wednesday described the challenges set at a summer camp as "important exercises that will make a child strong and determined".
"We asked the students to walk with naked feet on fire and on broken glass pieces as it teaches them to deal with their fear and find new ways to overcome it," Kalpesh Patel, a school administrator, told AFP.
Patel said 80 children aged nine to 14 walked on the hot coals, while 110 students walked over glass pieces. He said no one suffered any injuries.

Television footage of the event was picked up by Indian news channels.
"The children were reluctant in the beginning but afterwards they exuded confidence," Patel said, adding that the school had been running the activities for more than a decade.

Fire-walking has existed as a religious ritual in many cultures for thousands of years. It has also gained some popularity in the United States as a team-building exercise and alternative health remedy.

TAIPEI, April 30, 2010 - A Taiwanese vegetable vendor and philanthropist said Friday she was "embarrassed" to be named one of the world's 100 most influential people by the prestigious US magazine Time.

A female vegetable vendor in southeastern Taiwan's Taitung City is ranked along with former U.S. President Bill Clinton on U.S. Time magazine's 2010 list of the 100 most influential persons in the world for her philanthropy.
Chen Shu-chu ranked eighth in the “heroes” category of the 2010 Time 100 list.

Chen Shu-chu, 59, won the accolade for donating about 10 million Taiwan dollars (312,500 US) from her hard-earned fortune, accumulated selling vegetables in a market in southern Taitung county.

"What is Time (magazine)? I don't know about it. It's embarrassing but thank you all for your concerns," she told the Central News Agency.

Chen, who did not complete elementary school because of poverty, said that she doesn't know anything about the Time 100 list.

Chen, who started selling vegetables when she was 13 to help support her family, had donated money to a school and an orphanage in the past 17 years, according to Taiwanese media.

"What's so wonderful about Chen's achievement is not its extraordinariness but that it is so simple and matter-of-fact in its generosity," award-winning Taiwanese director Ang Lee wrote for Time.

Chen was not immediately available for comment when contacted by AFP.

Mission? Solve the quagmire beleaguering protest-hit Thailand.
If Ratana Orn-Arun has her way, she wants to "borrow" the former Prime Minister to help Thailand turn around.
The insurance executive is frustrated with the political situation in her country especially with street protests by both camps.
"Can we borrow Dr Mahathir? Maybe for five to 10 years?. He is very good.
"He can restructure the country and make Thailand more developed," she told The Star.
Ratana is no stranger to Malaysia, having to travel twice a year as the parent company is in Kuala Lumpur.
She said she liked Malaysia's methods of handling illegal assemblies, where protesters would be dispersed by the police quickly before the crowd got too big.
"The protesters here should gather in the public parks. Not in the city, closing roads and affecting businesses," she said.

Ratana is critical of both Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his predecessor Thaksin Shinatwatra.

"Thaksin must win and doesn't care how he does it while Abhisit wants to be nice to everybody.
"You cannot be like this in politics."

DWARF Empire is a popular attraction at a theme park that opened in September in south-western Yunnan province, China. The "empire" – part of a butterfly park – has quickly become the site's main draw, thanks to the popularity of dwarf performances that would likely evoke howls of protest in the West as an exploitative freak show.

Performances include a mini version of Swan Lake and there’s even a male dwarf in leather pants and a punk hairdo hand-walking and gyrating his hips to thunderous hip-hop.

But the more than 100 dwarves – known in China as "xiao ai ren", or "little small people" – who range from 79cm tall to 1.3m, dismiss suggestions that the park demeans them.

Several call it a haven in a country where their kind often face harassment and mistreatment and rarely get to mix with like-sized comrades.
