Doctors remove bullet from woman's face that lodged there 42 YEARS ago

 

He Wenying had a headache - and it wasn't going away.
In fact, it didn't go away for 42 years.
And when it spread throughout her entire body earlier this month, she decided she could wait no longer.
He, 65, went under the knife earlier this month to allow doctors to remove a bullet that was embedded in her skull in 1967 during China's Cultural Revolution.
The 3.3cm bullet apparently hit He when it ricocheted through a thin wall during a fight  between rival factions of Red Guards amid the communist fundamentalism of the early Cultural Revolution.
It lodged into the right side of her face between her jaw and her ear.
Astonishingly, she did not realise a bullet was there until 1978, when doctors finally figured out what the cause of her persistent headaches was.

But terrible medical conditions at the local hospital in her remote town meant doctors had to send poor He home to suffer another 30 years of headaches - knowing full well what the problem was, but unable to do anything about it.

Six-year-old Rekha Bae – like all children in the 600-strong nomadic Vadi tribe in western India – will have first been introduced to cobras at the age of two.

All Vadi children complete a ten-year initiation ritual that culminates in the boys becoming fully-fledged performing snake charmers.
Divided between the sexes, the act of snake charming with traditional flute is the role of the men, while the Vadi women care for the snakes and handle them when their husbands or brothers are not around.

'The training begins at two, the children then are then taught the ancient ways of snake charming until they are ready to take up their roles in our community,' said chief snake charmer Babanath Mithunath Madari, 60.

'At twelve the children will know everything that they can know about snakes.

'They are then ready to continue the traditions of the Vadi tribe which can be stretched back over one thousands years to India's great Raja's (kings).'

The nomadic Vadi tribe, which lives in the south of the Indian state of Gujarat take great pride in their association with the areas deadly snakes.

Never staying in one place for more than six months, the Vadi have an almost mythical attachment to snakes and especially cobras.
'At night, as we sit around our huts in the open desert and explain to the pact that our descendants made with Naga, the snake god,' Madari said.
'We explain to the children how we only take a snake away from its natural habitat for a maximum of seven months.

'Any more is disrespectful to the snake and especially after the charmer and snake have worked together so closely and so intimately.

'Both are trusting their lives to the other one.'
The cobras are fed a herbal mixture which Madari says renders the snake's deadly poison useless.

'We do not cut the fangs off the snakes as that would be cruel,' the tribal chief said.
'We do not harm the them because they are like children to us.
'In all my years with snakes, from my childhood to now, I have only heard of one man to have been bitten.
'This was because he kept the snake longer than seven months.'
Since snake charming was made illegal in 1991, the Vadi have come under huge pressure from the state and national governments of India.

'The police routinely search us strip us of our snakes whenever we cross their paths,' Madari said.

'We live 25km away from the town of Rajkot at the moment, and every time we try to enter the village for food or even bottle of water, the villagers chase us away.

'This upsets me greatly because this village is the birthplace of the father of our nation Gandhi.

'Would he stop us from continuing our traditions? The rich of India have no time for the poor.'

Hollywood bombshell Megan Fox doesn't quite like the profession she is in as the star believes that the actors are like prostitutes who get paid for doing something unethical.

"When you think about it, we actors are kind of prostitutes," the Transformers star told the GQ magazine.

"We get paid to feign attraction and love. Other people are paying to watch us kissing someone, touching someone, doing things people in a normal monogamous relationship would never do with anyone who's not their partner. It's really kind of gross," Fox said.

However the actress, who had openly talked about her lesbian relationship with a Russian stripper earlier, downplayed her wild image, "I have this sort of promiscuous image. People assume I'm really overtly sexually aggressive and that I'm this wild child. And I'm not like that at all."

Fox will be seen in Transformers sequel Revenge Of The Fallen which is releasing on June 19.

Her next role is of a demoniacally possessed cheerleader in Jennifer's Body which will be out in October. She's also tipped to take over the Tomb Raider franchise from Angelina Jolie.

               Deadly bacteria thrive in soiled Indian notes.Beware of malignant,
money-minded microbes when you are handling cash in India.

               A recent study revealed that currency notes - torn of soiled ones in
particular -  are common carriers of some deadly disease in India.

              Soiled paper money provides ideal conditions for bacteria to thrive and
causes people handling them to come down with tuberculosis, peptic ulcer,
pneumonia, gastroenteritis and other maladies.

               The study by the Shillong based Reginal Sophisticated Instrumentation
Centre (RSIC) under the North Eastern Hill University, discovered that celulose,
which makes up part of the composition of a currency note , plays the ideal host
to these malicous microbes.

               " Fresh notes are immuneto these microbes, " said Mr Sudip Dey of
RSIC, which conducted the study along with microbiologist H. Kayeng and
physician S.S. Ghosh.

               " Tearing or soiling of a note exposes celluloseand conditionsit to be
a carrier of the deadly bacteria. "
               Mr. Dey added that the " situation is pretty serious ," what with
soiled notes of lower denomination being widely in circulation in India.

               The relative scarcity of notes up to five rupees has increased their
acceptability, even if they are frayed at the edges or taped together.
               The taped notes are more susceptible to being infested by bacteria,
the researchers said, adding that the worst samples of such notes are found
in the fish and meat markets.

               The normal practice of wetting fingers with saliva to count money
provides folder for these microbes.
               This habit also helpsthe becteria find their way to the human body.

               Of the 70 samples of soiled notes used for the study, almost all
carried the Bacillus microbe, the culprit behind tuberculosis.
               The Bacillus presence in the notes was found to be more than
80 percent, followed by Stroptococus with 65 per cent.

               Stroptococcus can cause pneumonia, lung abscess, tonsillitis,
pharyngitis and gastroenteritis.
               The  other microbes found to have a significant presence included
the menigtis-causing Synechococcus, the peptic ulcer-causing Heliobactor
Pilori and Micrococcus which is capable of inflictinga genital tract infection.

               The reason that the researchers concentrated on notes of lower
denominiation was their tendencyto get soiled faster than notes of higher
value.
               "This does not mean that 10-rupee notes or those of higher
denomination do not carry these micorbes," maintained Mr. Dey.

               The  researchers said the diseases can be avoided if care is
taken while handling soiled notes.
               Prolonged exposure to soiled notes shouldbe avoided, and
" one should not touch them with fingers sporting festers, cuts or open
wounds."

Abu Dhabi/Dubai: In a victory for freedom of the press in the UAE, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, yesterday issued instructions that journalists in the country will not be jailed for doing their work.

The announcement was made by Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister and Chairman of the National Media Council (NMC).

Shaikh Abdullah said Shaikh Mohammad issued instructions that no journalist is to be jailed for reasons related to his work, adding that there are other measures that may be taken against journalists who break the press and publication law, but not jail, WAM reported.

Except for the fact that "other measures" sounds infinitely more terrifying than a free stay at the Al Wathba Hilton*.

ကမ ၻာအပုဆံုးလူပုေလး

Tiny Jyoti Amge is already a 'mini' celebrity in her hometown of Nagpur, India.

But she has one big claim to fame - at just under two-foot tall the teenager is the smallest girl in the world.

Now Jyoti is to be featured in Channel 4's Bodyshock series on Thursday, June 11 at 9pm.

Standing just one foot 11.5ins at 15-years-old, she is half the size of her two-year-old nephew.

'When I tell people my age they don't believe me,' she said.

Weighing just 12lbs - only 9lbs more than her weight at birth, Jyoti dreams of becoming an actress and is believed by many to be the reincarnation of a goddess.
'When I was three I realised that I was different to the rest of the kids,' she said.

'I thought that everyone was bigger and I should get bigger too.'

Jyoti has her own mini grey uniform and school bag and even a tiny desk. But she looks like a doll next to her teenage classmates.

She said: 'I am proud of being the smallest girl. I love all the attention I get.

'I'm not scared of being small, and I don't regret being small.

'I am sure there are many people in this world who are dwarves like me.

'I'm just the same as other people. I eat like you, dream like you. I don't feel any different.'

Despite her tiny size Jyoti insists on living as normal a life as possible - including going to the local school where she is an average and sometimes naughty student.

'I used to get stressed and couldn't go out much but now I like going out and speaking to people,' she said.

'When I first went to school everyone was so big I used to get scared but I'm okay now, I like it.

'I have a different desk and chair that were made for me. I'm a normal student.

'I would like to be an actress when I grow up. My dream is to do films.'

Jyoti has already had a taste of fame in a pop video for Indian star Mika Singh.

'They asked her to appear in the video for a song on his album,' said her mum Ranjana Amge, 45.
However, Jyoti's dreams of stardom could be ruined because of fractures to both her legs that have never healed due to problems with her size.

'First I could walk, but I slipped on ice during a holiday and hurt my leg. Because of that I'm not able to do anything. I find it strange that my legs just don't heal. They should heal quickly. I don't like it, it causes me pain.'

Doctors believe Jyoti is a pituitary dwarf but have never been able to pinpoint her condition.

Jyoti's mum said: 'No-one knows why she is so small. We consulted a specialist and he said she will be this size all of her life.

'Jyoti is small, yet cute, and we love her very much.'

People in the region of India where the family live flock to see the pretty teenager and some even treat her as a goddess.

Ambitious Jyoti dreams of making it as a Bollywood actress. She said: 'I would love to act in films. I would love to travel to London and to see the different world there.

'I want to see America as well. I'd love to work in a big city like Mumbai.'
Jyoti receives tremendous support from her brother and two sisters, and is treated the same as other members of the family.


Oldest sister Archana, 25, said: 'I have been taking care of her since she was a small baby. She is so delicate and fragile.

'In the morning I get her ready, take her to school and in the evening help her with the homework and studies.'

During her first five years of life, brave Jyoti was in and out of hospital as she constantly fell sick, but eventually she grew stronger.

The teenager's dad Kishan Amge, 52, a construction worker, said: 'She makes me proud.


'Lots of saints and spiritual gurus come to see and bless her. They pray for her happiness and long life.'

But clever Jyoti, who is doing well in her lessons, is also like any other teenage girl.

She said: 'I have a huge collection of dresses. I like to shop for more. Everyone in my family gets things for me.

'I love make-up and like dressing up like beautiful models. I live a normal, healthy life and I'm very happy.'
