THOUSANDS of Aussies who BARELY knew each other have stripped off for a naked photoshoot.
Some 5,200 fans of photographic artist Spencer Tunick revealed all in striking poses at the Sydney Opera House for the renowned snapper.
In one they reach for the sky while in others they stare across the harbour — and embrace cheek to cheek. Braving an early morning chill they shed their clothes, abandoned any embarrassment, and posed naked for renowned American nudist photographer Spencer Tunick.
People came in all shapes and sizes and one heavily pregnant woman even postponed the birth of her twins so she could take part.
The work is the latest in a series in which Tunick gets nudes to pose en masse in front of urban backdrops.
Volunteer Steven Anglier, who wore a wig so he could stand out, said: "It's really a weird experience because you think there could be something sexual behind it, but there's not."
Titled Mardi Gras: The Base, the installation had been commissioned by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, which took place over the weekend.
Tunick, from New York, told the naked army: "I want all couples to embrace and kiss, all friends to kiss and all strangers to do whatever they want."
After the event yesterday he said even he was surprised at how natural it felt.
He added: "I thought it could be a bit awkward, but it's funny because when you're naked and everybody else is naked, you feel like you're dressed, because everybody looks the same." He has produced nearly 100 similar installations around the world and insists it is not about exhibitionism or eroticism.
His passion for such works has got him arrested in the United States. His largest work so far was in Mexico in 2007 when he photographed 18,000 people in Mexico City's Zocalo Square.
This is Mr Tunick's first installation in Australia following projects in the U.S., Brazil, France, England, Spain, Switzerland, Holland and Austria.
