In China, coloured chicks are the new black. Literally.
Chicken eggs are being injected with dye in order to produce multi-coloured chicks upon hatching.
They are then sold as toys or accessories by street vendors in China, India, Malaysia, Morocco, Yemen and even the United States.
Questions of animal cruelty have arisen as a result, as dyes often comprise hydrogen peroxide and ammonia.
Food colouring could also have been used and while it is harmless on humans, it could cause intoxication and even death for the chicken embryos.
The colouring is not permanent either. As the hatchlings grow, new feathers will replace the coloured ones, causing them to lose their visual appeal and run the risk of being discarded by their owners.
