-- Next time you are stranded waiting for a bus or taxi, there's an increasing chance a biker may come to the rescue. But don't expect a free ride. During the past few months, more and more workers who earn a living on motorcycles have turned to moonlighting to supplement wages in hard times.
The riders carry a spare helmet and offer lifts at bargain rates for short trips around the city.
"I was actually surprised, as I have never seen something like this in the emirate before," said Mohammed Abu, who works as a salesman.
Kamal Saif, a labourer, got a ride from a mall in Al Quoz to where he lives nearby. "During the conversation, he said that he was working in some res- taurant carrying food to the people who ordered for it," he said.
The Roads and Transport Authority has fixed heavy fines for a similar practice by car drivers who transport passengers illegally. The RTA says it's passenger smuggling and drivers can be fined Dh5000. The fine doubles for the second offence and deportation can be ordered.
