This man-made wonder is 1013 meters long covers 80 acres, its deepest end reaches 115ft and it holds 66 million gallons of water. If you want to take a dip in the world’s largest swimming pool you’ll have to travel to San Alfonso del Mar in Algarrobo, Chile, where a computer-controlled suction and filtration system continuously pumps water from the ocean, keeping crystal clear.

Although it wasn’t cheap, costing around $2 billion to build and another $4 million/year for maintenance, the pool seems to be worth it as it has been attracting huge crowds of curious tourists, since it opened in December.

The daily grind at the office may not seem so bad after viewing these startling images.
For, no matter how grumpy your boss may be this morning, at least you aren't actually risking life and limb by sticking your head in his jaws.
But that is exactly what the crocodile wrestlers at a Thai zoo do on a daily basis.
This astonishing series of photographs shows the men at the Samphran Elephant Ground and Zoo performing what may well be the world's most dangerous job.

The wranglers have been performing the stunts at the zoo on the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand, since it was set up in 1985.
During the hour-long shows they stick their head between the jaws of some of the zoo's biggest crocs, in the style of Krai Thong, a legendary Thai crocodile hunter.
Photographer Bronek Kaminski, who witnessed the feat on a trip to the attraction, said: 'They are quite lively crocodiles. They are not lying around half asleep all the time.
'They are chomping at a bamboo stick and snapping their jaws and then they guys put them into some sort of trance and put their head into the croc's mouth.

'He keeps it in there for a long time, and puts his arm in, right up to his shoulder.
'Then the crocodile goes back to being a wild animal. It's very impressive.
'I was not sure if they were actually going to do it so when they do you are really taken back by it.'
The centre also doubles up as a breeding zoo, and has more than 10,000 crocodiles.

The family of a 14-month-old boy who survived after falling on a chopstick which pierced his brain through his nostril have credited doctors for giving him a 'second life'.Li Jingchao, from the Shandong province in Eastern China, had been playing when he accidentally fell over, impaling himself on the chopstick which then lodged itself inside his skull.
His mother Zhao Guilu was in the kitchen washing dishes when she heard her son cry out in pain.

Zhao Guilu said: 'I rushed in and saw him lying on the ground. He couldn't stop crying and I noticed a chopstick stuck in his nose.'

The family took the little boy to a nearby surgery for medical attention, but doctors there feared pulling the eating utensil out would cause mortal damage.
Instead, a relative offered to drive Li Jingchao, Zhao Guilu and father Li Guanglai 930 miles to the Boai Hospital in Beijing, a medical facility renowned for its treatment of head injuries.

Li Guanglai said he could barely contain himself during the drive, adding: 'I thought at that time, it is all over, my boy will die.

'During the 10 hours of driving, I felt depressed, I could barely breathe. I looked at my boy and his right side was numb, he was paralysed.'
As soon as the family arrived the the Beijing hospital, neurosurgeons rushed Li Jingchao into the operating room, where they attempted to remove the chopstick from his brain.Despite fears the utensil would rupture an artery when it was removed, it came out easily. However, experts explained if the chopstick had lodged itself just millimetres to either side, or further in his brain, it could have caused permanent paralysis or death.

Doctor Sun Wei explained to CNN: 'It touched upon the deep area of his brain, four centimeters of the chopstick was inside his skull. The position of the chopstick was very, very lucky for him.'

Father Li Guanglai added: 'I never thought it would be this successful. This hospital gave him a second life.'

Doctor Sun Wei warned the next three to five days will be critical as Li Jingchao could contract an infection following the surgery.

He also said there is a chance the 14-month-old could develop epilepsy in the future as a result of the accident.

Copenhagen's Lord Mayor has written to all 500 climate change delegates pleading with them to abstain from using services of the city's 'unsustainable' prostitutes.
Ritt Bjerregaard, who is hosting her own climate conference for mayors, said: 'As mayor I have a duty over which image of Copenhagen will be shown during the summit and I think it’s deplorable that you can buy a woman for sex.'

A sex workers organisation has responded by urging its members to offer free sex to anyone attending the meeting .
The city council contacted 160 hotels asking them not to arrange prostitutes for guests attending the conference.
Together with the anti-trafficking organisation, The Nest International, and tourism group Wonderful Copenhagen, it issued postcards featuring the slogan, ‘Be sustainable – don’t buy sex’, which been distributed to hotels.A sex workers interest organisation, SIO, has hit out at claims that sex tourism increases during high-level summits.
SIO spokeswoman Susanne Møller said: 'It’s completely discriminatory. Ritt Bjerregaard is abusing her position when she uses her power to prevent us from carrying out our legal work.
'I don't understand how she can be allowed to contact people in this way - we have to defend ourselves.'
The group has now decided to offer a free service to people who present one of the council’s anti-prostitution postcards, along with their official summit ID during the two-week conference.

Baloo the bear, Leo the Lion and Shere Khan the tiger have the most unusual and unlikely friendship between them. 

Rescued eight years ago during a police drugs raid in Atlanta, Georgia, the three friends were only cubs at the time and barely two months old.
They had been kept as status symbol pets by the drug barons.
Delivered to the Noah's Ark animal rescue centre in Locust Grove, Georgia, the decision was made to keep the youngsters together.
"We could have separated them, but since they came as a kind of family, the zoo decided to keep them together," said Diane Smith, assistant director of the Noah's Ark zoo.
"To our knowledge, this is the only place where you'll find this combination of animals together, they are our BLT, (bear, lion and tiger).
Living with the zoo's founders for the past eight years, Shere Khan, Baloo and Leo have now moved to a purpose built habitat were the US public can now witness first hand their touching relationship.
"We didn't have the money to move them at first," said DIane.
"Now their habitat is sorted and they have been moved away from the children's zoo areas where the public couldn't really get a good look.
"Now, though, it is possible to see Baloo, who is a 1,000 pound bear, Shere Khan, a 350 pound tiger and Leo, who is also 350 pounds messing around like brothers.
"They are totally oblivious to the fact that in any other circumstance they would not be friends."
Handled by Charles and Jama Hedgecoth, the zoo's owners and founders, the three friendly giants appear to have have no comprehension of their animal differences.
"Baloo and Shere Khan are very close," says DIane.
"That is because they rise early, as Leo being a lion likes to spend most the day sleeping.
"It is wonderful and magical to see a giant American Black Bear put his arm around a Bengal tiger and then to see the tiger nuzzle up to the bear like a domestic cat.
"When Leo wakes up the three of them mess around for most of the day before they settle down to some food."
Surprisingly for three apex predators with the power to kill with a single bite or swipe of their paw, they are very relaxed around each other.
'"They eat, sleep and play together," said Jama Hedgecoth, founder of Noah's Ark zoo.
"As they treat each other as siblings they will lie on top of each other for heat and simply for affection.

Explaining that the three 'brothers' have always seemed to share a unique bond, Charles Hedgecoth, Jama's husband and fellow founder talks about his role in their upbringing.
"They are obviously not wild animals any more," said Charles.
"Noah's Ark is their home and they could not possibly be separated from each other.
"You just have to remember who you're dealing with when you are with them though.
"It's when you forget that these fellows are wild animals that you get yourself in trouble."
According to DIane Smith, the trio's new habitat cost an estimated £15,000 and had to be constructed carefully, in order to accommodate its occupants.
"The clubhouse had to be very sturdy for the guys, because they all sleep in it together,"
We had to include a creek, because the tiger and the bear both like to be in water."

A Somali woman of 20 has been stoned to death after admitting she had an affair, an Islamic militant judge said today.

The woman was a divorcee - but even though she was no longer married, her affair was seen as adultery in the eyes of Somalia's extremist interpretation of Sharia law.

Her punishment was therefore to be buried up to her waist in front of a crowd of 200 people and stoned to death.

Her unmarried boyfriend was given 100 lashes for the affair.

Sheikh Ibrahim Abdirahman, the judge for the group al-Shabab, says the woman was killed yesterday in front of a crowd of some 200 people near the town of Wajid.

Abdirahman says the 20-year-old woman had an affair with a 29-year-old unmarried man and gave birth to a stillborn child.

The militants that control much of southern Somalia and have links to al Qaeda have implemented an extremist reading of Islam's Sharia law.

The stoning death was at least the fourth for adultery in Somalia over the last year.

It was the second time a female has been killed.

A baby is sparking a wave of speculation in Russia after phrases from the Koran allegedly began appearing on his skin.


Sayings from the Muslim holy book are said to appear on nine-month-old Ali Yakubov's back, arms, legs and stomach - before apparently fading away and being replaced with new sayings.
Russian medics claimed they are puzzled over the cause of the marks on a baby's skin, which started when the word Allah apparently appeared on his chin within weeks of his birth.

Medics deny that the marks are from someone writing on the child's skin.

His mother, Madina, said that she and her husband were not religious until the writings started appearing on his skin.

Initially they did not show anyone the unexplained writings, she said, until revealing them to their doctor and the imam in their village of Red October which is in a strongly Muslim region.

Now the boy has become a focus of Muslim homage in his troubled home province of Dagestan, close to war-ravaged Chechnya in the south of Russia.

Local MP Akhmedpasha Amiralaev said: 'This boy is a pure sign of God. Allah sent him to Dagestan in order to stop revolts and tension in our republic.'

The boy's mother claimed: 'Normally those signs appear twice a week - on Mondays and on the nights between Thursdays and Fridays.

A hardline Islamist group in Somalia has begun publicly whipping women for wearing bras that they claim violate Islam as they are 'deceptive'.

The insurgent group Al Shabaab has sent gunmen into the streets of Mogadishu to round up any women who appear to have a firm bust, residents claimed yesterday.

The women are then inspected to see if the firmness is natural, or if it is the result of wearing a bra.

If they are found wearing a bra, they are ordered to remove it and shake their breasts, residents said.

Al Shabaab, which seeks to impose a strict interpretation of Sharia law over all Somalia, also amputated a foot and a hand each from two young men accused of robbery earlier this month.

They have also banned movies, musical ringtones, dancing at wedding ceremonies and playing or watching soccer.

'Al Shabaab forced us to wear their type of full veil and now they order us to shake our breasts,' a resident, Halima, told Reuters, adding that her daughters had been whipped on Thursday.

'They are now saying that breasts should be firm naturally, or just flat.'
Officials of Al Shabaab, which Washington says is Al Qaeda's proxy in the failed Horn of Africa state, declined to comment.

The group's hardline interpretation of Islamic law has shocked many Somalis, who are traditionally moderate Muslims. Some residents, however, give the insurgents credit for restoring order to the regions under their control.

Al Shabaab, which means 'youth' in Arabic, control large swathes of south and central Somalia.

Abdullahi Hussein, a student in north Mogadishu, said his elder brother was thrown behind bars when he fought back a man who humiliated their sister by asking her to remove her bra.

'My brother was jailed after he wrestled with a man that had beaten my sister and forced her to remove her bra. He could not stand it,' Hussein said.

Men were not spared the' moral cleansing'. Any man caught without a beard was been publicly whipped.

'I was beaten and my hair was cut off with a pair of scissors in the street,' Hussein said.
'My trouser was also cut up to the knee. They accused me of shaving my beard but I am only 18.
'They have arrested dozens of men and women. You just find yourself being whipped by a masked man as soon as leave your house.'

One snake would be too much for most people, but for Sue Coleman, even 45 are not enough.

Unlike other ladies her age, the 60-year-old grandmother is not interested in bingo or knitting, preferring to spend quality time with her slithery friends.

Sue, AKA Snakey Sue, and her snakes enjoy pottering around at her house together, much to the amusement of neighbours in Leytonstone, east London.

"I love them, they make such good pets, as long as people can care for them properly," she said.

Over the past 17 years, Sue has turned her home in a quiet residential street into a living zoo, with pythons, hognose snakes, corn snakes and barley snakes, which she often rescues from people who don't know how to care for them.

She said: "It started with a couple of corn snakes I brought 12 years ago.

"I went to find out more about them and became fascinated by snakes. Before I know it I had ten, then twenty, and it just carried on."

The snake addict admits she still wants more to add to her collection.

Her most recent acquisition is a 10-foot Albino Python named Ra and Sue says the only thing that will slow her down is a lack of space.

But she spends a fortune each week on dead mice to feed her massive brood.

"My electricity bills are huge because of all the lighting used for their tanks," she added.

Sue even works with her snakes, dancing with them as part of her belly dancing entertainment act.
Although she understands snakes make most people shudder, she keen to help people conquer their fears.

Colonel Gaddafi's bizarre rant at the UN was met with yawns and disbelief by delegates.
But it was too much for the eccentric Libyan leader's translator who is said to have collapsed with exhaustion during the lengthy diatribe.
The beleaguered interpreter cried 'I just can’t take it any more,' into a live microphone in Arabic after 75 minutes of Gaddafi's ramblings.
He was replaced by the UN’s Arabic section chief, Rasha Ajalyaqeen, who translated the final 20 minutes of the speech.
'His interpreter just collapsed – this is the first time I have seen this in 25 years,' a UN Arabic interpreter told The New York Post.
Gaddafi broke protocol and brought his own interpreters from Tripoli for Wednesday’s speech rather than using one of the 25 Arabic translators supplied by the United Nations, staff interpreters said.
Before his one hour and 36 minute long speech he told the U.N. that he was supplying his own French and English interpreters because he would be speaking a special dialect only they would understand, but staff interpreters said he actually spoke standard Arabic.

'This is the best team in the world – most heads of state prefer to use U.N. interpreters because then – no matter what happens – they can blame the interpreter,'  another staffer told the paper.

In his rant Gaddafi - who has not visited the UN since he took power in 1969  - read from a yellow folder of handwritten notes and spoke about  Israel, the Taliban, swine flu and the US invasion of Grenada.

He also suggested the Security Council be renamed the 'terror council' castigating it  for failing to stop 65 wars since 1945.

Another Arabic interpreter emphasised with the translator's exasperation.

'He’s not exactly the most lucid speaker.
'It’s not just that what he’s saying is illogical, but the way he’s saying it is bizarre. However, I think I could have made him sound a lot better.'

UN speakers are supposed to limit themselves to 15 minutes and the chamber was half empty by the time Gaddafi finished.
His speech wasn't as long as Fidel Castro's in 1960 which went on for four and a half hours.
Indian politician VK Krishna Menon also went on in 1957 when he talked for a nearly eight hours on Kashmir.

A towering North Korean hotel which Esquire magazine once dubbed 'the worst building in the history of mankind' has come back to life with a shiny new face.

Few commentators expect the North will ever finish construction of its 105-storey Ryugyong Hotel, started in 1987 and halted for 16 years because it could have bankrupted the destitute state.

Still, a facade of shiny glass windows on one side of the concrete giant has helped take away some of the building's stark ugliness.

The 330-metre (1,083 ft) tall hotel dominates the Pyongyang skyline.

The building consists of three wings rising at 75 degree angles, capped by several floors arranged in rings, which supposed to hold five revolving restaurants and an observation deck.

'The hotel doesn't look as shoddy as it once did, probably because of the reflective glass,' said a member of a civic group in South Korea that recently visited the area.

Foreign residents of Pyongyang contacted in Seoul said Egypt's Orascom group began renovations last year.

The peak of the 3,000-room hotel, in a country that permits few foreigners to visit, is encircled in new rings of shiny steel.
Mirrored glass has yet to be affixed to the other sides of the muddish-grey concrete structure, foreigner visitors said.

'North Koreans told me that you put the glass on one side and if all goes well and looks fine, you then continue on to the others,' the civic group member said.

Analysts said the North was likely sprucing up the Ryugyong's facade as part of a campaign to try to turn the state into a 'great and prosperous nation' by 2012.

The communist North started construction in a suspected fit of jealousy at South Korea, which was about to host the 1988 Summer Olympics and show off to the world the success of its rapidly developing economy
But by 1992, worked was halted. The North's main benefactor the Soviet Union had dissolved the previous year and funding for the hotel dried up.

As the North's economy took a deeper turn for the worse in the 1990s, the empty shell became a symbol of the country's failure, earning the nicknames 'Hotel of Doom' and 'Phantom Hotel'.

For a time, the North airbrushed images of the Ryugyong Hotel from photographs.

Architects said there were questions raised about whether the hotel, which has never opened for guests, was structurally sound and a few believed completing the building could cause it to collapse.

Estimates published in South Korean have put the costs of completing the hotel and making it structurally sound at as much as $2billion, more than 10 percent of the North's yearly gross domestic product.

Over the years many a centenarian has delivered their secret for a long life.
Not smoking, daily exercise, moderate drinking, being married (and sometimes not being married) have all had their champions.

But, at the ripe old age of 105, Clara Meadmore could trump the lot: a life of celibacy.
Miss Meadmore says she has always been too busy for relationships and thought of physical intimacy as a 'hassle'.

The former secretary, who will celebrate her birthday tomorrow, said she had no regrets about remaining a virgin and had turned down several marriage proposals.

Miss Meadmore said: 'People have asked whether I am a homosexual and the answer is no. I have just never been interested in or fancied having sex.

'I imagine there is a lot of hassle involved and I have always been busy doing other things. I've never had a boyfriend - I've never been bothered about relationships.'

She added: 'When I was a girl you only had sex with your husband - and I never married.

'I've always had lots of platonic friendships with men but never felt the need to go further than that or marry.

'Everything seems so fast these days. I don't know a lot about young people or the way they do things. I'm sure it's very different. I made my mind up at the age of 12 never to marry and I've not gone back on that.'

Miss Meadmore was born in Glasgow in 1903, two years after the death of Queen Victoria. She remembers hearing about the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and the outbreak of the First World War. Her family emigrated when she was seven, first to Egypt, then Canada and later New Zealand. But Miss Meadmore returned to Britain alone in her twenties and worked as a secretary and housekeeper.

She said: 'I grew up in an era where little girls were to be seen and not heard so I had to learn to stand up for myself and earn my own living.

'Some men don't like that in a woman and before long I was too old to marry anyway.'

Instead of boyfriends, Miss Meadmore filled her time with reading, gardening, cooking and listening to the radio.

Yesterday her friend and former neighbour Josie Harvey, 72, said: 'When she was a little girl she told her mother that she would never marry and for Clara no marriage meant no sex. She is fiercely independent.

'Maybe never having a man to get under her feet has kept her young all these years. She has her hobbies and her friends and that is all she needs.

'She has always believed in doing things her own way and that has allowed her to live a long life. Clara listens to Radio 4 all day long and knows what is going on in the world better than most people in their 30s.'

Miss Meadmore trained as a secretary and served in the Army, undertaking administrative duties in Egypt during the Second World War. She was one of the first members of the Youth Hostel Association and a keen member of the Women's Institute.

Her only surviving family are two nieces in New Zealand who keep in touch by post.

Miss Meadmore will celebrate reaching 105 with a card from the Queen and a glass of wine with her friends at the Perran Bay nursing home in Perranporth, Cornwall.

But she is determined not to let things get out of hand. 'I'm hardly likely to get drunk and do something silly at my age,' she said.
