Police have come out with an unusual way in tackling vice activities in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province in China.

Xiangfu police station chief Wang Peijun said officers would write to families of women believed to have involved in flesh trade.

"Your family member (name) is currently working at a hairdressing saloon, which deals with unlawful business."

"As the family, you have the right to understand the environment of the workplace. The police department also hopes to get your co-operation to advice your loved one not to go astray."

Photographs of the respective suspected prostitutes are attached to the letters.

Hangzhou police came out with the idea upon finding out that some 99% of the non-formal hair saloons were involved in prostitution.

However, police found it difficult to gather sufficient evidence to bring those involved to court.

"This is an alternative soft punishment for these women,"’ said Wang.

He said police had sent out 60 letters over the past two months and 80% of the recipients responded to their calls.

"Most families contacted us, expressing their wish to see their daughters as soon as possible."

"Some told us that their daughters were forced into prostitution. They hoped we could send them back home."

Wang said from the response most of the women had lost contact with their families.

Some had even run away from homes, he added.

"Your family member (name) is currently working at a hairdressing saloon, which deals with unlawful business."
